Key points I'd like to see addressed

1. Save WIS on Queens Wharf
2. New Sports Centre at Kilbirnie or on top of Westpac walk up ramp
3. Women's safety at night in the city centre
4. Introduce a combined  train & Phoenix match ticket for fans from Upper Hutt & Whitby lines
5. Drop the marine centre  from South Wellington

When Hibs, went up, to win the Scottish Cup - I wisnae there - furfuxake!

You can't vote for everybody...

Frankie Mac can vote for everbody. The elections are STV (Single Transferable Vote), which means you get to give the candidates a ranking eg 1,2,3,etc. You can rank as many or as few as you like. For more info on STV, visit www.stv.govt.nz.

1. Agree
2. Agree
3. Agree
4. How about subsidised public transport in the light of climate change (if the antarctic melts, new zealand floods, and the stadium with the nix literally go under)
5. disagree

1)Agree but some new flooring wouldn't go amiss and a futsal court as well
2)Agree either or
3)Agree and would like to see less loutish behavior all round in city centre
4)Disagree i think there should be a big gate on the motorway that shuts at 6.30pm every night and keeps everyone from the Hutt etc out of our wonderful  bogan free city!
5)Should have been in the inner harbour where the punters are if its neccesary at all that is, 21 mil for  a fish zoo away out there in the middle of nowhere especially when theres another two major aquariums in NZ already and this one is going to rely mainly  on tourists who pass the other two on their way down from Auckland ,how many aquariums do you visit when you are  on holiday me thinks someone didn't do their homework here , the whole thing could end up being a huge drain on ratepayers money what on earth Kerry and the  council is doing getting mixed up with that dodgey Italian and his missus in this venture is beyond me or is there a smell of developer in the air perhaps!!

I don't believe Jack R has any problem with these, with one or two qualifications.

To answer:
1 - full support, always has
2. - ditto. He promoted the '12 courts' concept and the only problem with being near Westpac stadium was the Port Company being cute over lease terms etc. Jack's view was better to have courts now than pee in the breeze for the next 10 years dealing with bueaucrats pushing for an uncertain deal on their terms.
3. - Supports.  Strong support for street safety.  Jack grew up in Nairobi.  He knows danger when he sees it and wants safe streets for his kids and everyone else.
4. - Can't speak for him on this, but I'd wager he'd agree wholeheartedly on getting Toll and the Regional Council to support this initiative.
5.  - His clear view on this is 'NO' to pouring concrete on the seaward side of the south coast road - why destroy a pristine environment - but 'Yes' to a marine education centre on the other side of the road, properly designed and without destroying the visual splendour of the coast.

I wonder what the other candidates think?  (I should add that I'm no authorised spokesman for Jack - who speaks very well for himself - but I'm confident this expresses his view on these things.  If uncertain - email him at jack.ruben@xtra.co.nz.)

The Oz government recently gave the FFA AU$16M for the development of the mens & womens national teams, olympic and paralympic teams

http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,8659,22398025-23215,00.html

I know this isn't really an issue for local government - but if WCC can ensure that pitches and facilities are well maintained, then that at least supports football at grassroots level.

If we can let you guys into action indoor, I feel we should be able to get into WIS on the wharf (um unintentional pun there... must be the inner bogan :-)

I've played lots of indoor footy at the wharf and to be honest I don't know where else would be close enough for everyone to sneak off at lunchtime and play footy / netball  / volleyball.
So I'm all for keeping the WIS in sheds 1 and 6

2. New Sports Centre at Kilbirnie or on top of Westpac walk up ramp - up the ramp  would be great, and would increase the number of teams playing. Also, really easy to get to from the train.
3. Women's safety at night in the city centre - any suggestions? More of the guys with the yellow coats and cowboy hats?
4. Introduce a combined  train & Phoenix match ticket for fans from Upper Hutt & Whitby lines - too right, they do this for the rugby.
5. Can't really say - What are its effect likely to be to the (undersea) environment? What are it's ongoing costs to the city?

When's Terry running for mayor?
Permalink Permalink
over 18 years ago · edited over 13 years ago

Big John McGrath has my vote for the following reasons:

1. He's never been involved in local body politics

2. He makes a mean margharita

3. He is a friend of El Tel (Serepisos)

4. He's been to every game !

5. He is the only candidate who hasn't had a personality bypass.

6. He wants to fill the Tin and turn it into a Sea of Custard

What more could you want ? How could anyone vote for anyone else !

I would like the candidates to tell us what they plan to do about both the quantity and quality of sports fields in Wellington. Also, do the candidates support the introduction of artificial surfaces and can they give us a timeline for when we can expect to see artificial pitches being rolled out (and how many)?

Thousands of rate-paying Wellingtonians and their children have their participation in physical activity curtailed every year by the poor state of Wellington City Council grounds (other candidates from the greater Wellington region feel free to comment also).

I have no idea about Jack's views on sports fields quantity and qualities, but email him if you want at Jack.ruben@xtra.co.nz.  All I know is he's hugely supportive of developing sport in Wellington.

I believe Terry supports Jack for these reasons:

- Terry loves winners
- Both are successful in business
- Both are good looking
- Both have a sense of humour
- Jack doesn't pretend to know or even like Terry
- Both are unafraid
- Both were born 'offshore' and have a unique take on their adopted country
- Neither drops names like confetti
- Both are 'doers'
- Terry would like to be as energetic and entertaining as Jack at Jack's stage of life

So, to paraphrase, don't ask Terry who to vote for.  Do as Terry would. Vote for Jack.

Obviously posted by Jack or his wife.
Having seen Jack in action at council even Osama would be a more preferable choice for Mayor for Wellington. I would prefer to have someone born in the 20th and not the 19th Century.

Leave out the bagging, Spurs.

If you want to criticise, be reasonable about it.

That said, I would like to know who is writing as 'VoteJackRuben' and what their connection to the man is.

What do the candidates think of the councils arrogant and blind  pursuance of the Te Raekaihau point proposal ? i think it was a  complete and utter waste of public money and im so glad the environment court had the sense to pull the pin on on the whole daft idea and save the ratepayers from what was so obviously going to turn out to be a huge expensive white elephant .
Anyway would love to hear from some of the MEC supporters who are standing for mayor/council especially her worship the current incumbent and her wee pal  Apihene Mercer!!

Oh God, that is just so clever, Spurs - my sides are close to splitting from laughing so hard at your razor-sharp wit.

You clearly have no idea who CNUT actually is, so it's pointless trying to even explain it to you.

Fair enough, but i have met Ruben and he came across as a very angry man.If you get the chance quiz a few of the current councillers on how they think Jack Ruben would rate as Mayor. I think you would be shocked at their opinions.
Wellington's best Mayor by far was Mark Blumsky and John McGrath strikes me as a similar personality type i.e. youthful, vibrant and great self publicist, which ultimately gets publicity for Wellington, which is good for all of us,isn't it ?

Who is this spurs bugger?  Actually, who cares?  Listen, I'm not JR obviously. I'm supporting him because he's a straight shooter and not the angry type this spurs bugger would have us believe.  Why would you want to ask other rival councillors what they think of him?  First, most are struggling to keep their seat on the disfunctional council and second, none have his credentials to run an operation.  But if age is the problem, then I suggest you grow up.

that comment is comfortably the dumbest on this thread

coincidentally, all four mayoral candidates (or their spokespeople) happened to register on this site on 19 September. Funnily enough, that was the same day we invited them to do so.

you might want to quit before you do your preferred candidate, mr mgrath, any further damage through association

so he's got my vote (doesn't take much)
