Reported in the Herald just now under the signing of Rojas is this...

"Meanwhile, utility player Jeremy Christie has not had his contract with the Phoenix renewed.

The 26-year-old New Zealand representative was a foundation player for the Phoenix and departs after two years with the club.

" Unfortunately, we had to make some tough decisions around the squad and our focus was on other areas in terms of recruitment," Pignata said."

Can't help thinking he might still have been a useful squad member, but clearly the mgmt are looking elsewhere...

The same article in the herald is also on the Phoenix website so must be true.
Any chance we will be picked up by another A-League team?

Fury only have 1 (maybe 2 depending on Robinson and OZ citizenship?) import slot, and probably won't want to use it on a squad player

I'd say he will head back to the UK and try his luck there.

Its a big time for himself now, if he doesn't pick up a contract arguebly it will be back to playing amatuer football for him and looking for a real job again.

Still thought he was pretty decent for us and that he could have played a role this year. Disappointed for him.

I wonder if he was told a while back so he would have time to look at other options?

I guess they need the money for 2 strikers. Its a shame for Christie, but strikers are a priority.

All the best to him , he served the club well. Might struggle to play for the All Whites now, if not picked up and playing regularly. Hope he gets something good going

Good utility player and I will miss him. His enthusiasm off the field towards fans and the Nix was excellent.

Good luck Plodder, I wish you all the very best for your footballing future.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Agreed, was a versatile guy but not what we were needing right now.

Hope he secures a professional contract somewhere.

Just his bad luck that we signed Mulligan for two years. Think if we'd signed Mulligan for just 1 year, Plodder would probably have been re-signed.

I'd rather have Plodder at right back than Mulligan at this stage, even though Plodder was way out of position. At least he gave it a good go regardless of where he was played when given the few games he got.

He's not looking at other A League sides. Might be looking at a club in India according to interview on radio. Has a few options to consider.

Christie's stats, just for the record...

Season one: 12 starts (subbed off twice), 4 appearances as sub, 16 appearances total, 4 yellow cards

Season two: 0 starts, 10 appearances as sub, 10 appearances total, 0 yellow cards

Total: 12 starts, 14 appearances as sub, 26 appearances total, 4 yellow cards, 0 goals.

I always thought he was very courteous with the media and fans.  A nice guy.

Nice guy, clearly interested in the fans and the club and enjoyed playing in Wellington.

BUT

For those saying that we should have kept him can anyone remember a match for us (or the AWs even) where he was the best player on the pithc?  Or even in the top 5?  In a 22 man squad if you're not good enough to push for a starting spot then really you're a bit of a luxury

Normo's coming home

Good observation - something I wonder about frequently - who is the stronger team? AWs or The Phoenix? - probably worth a seperate thread...

If memory serves me correct that was at the game against Adelaide, the night before the LA Galaxy game?

I heaved with laughter seeing that and my respect for him increased ten-fold.

There are at least two other players still on the books who aren't as good as Christie. Why haven't they let them go? matty.j2009-07-01 22:28:28

it certainly was memorable loyalgunner,

Dean Windass achieved the same for the Tigers this season against Stoke , he got booked for 'maliciously warming up' a litle too close to Delap as delap ponced about taking one of his long throws

same game Andy Dawson pissed the stoke fans off by grabbing one of the towels delap was fannying about with earlier and made a real show of drying the ball

Well good luck to him.

You know after all he has done, I don't think that he actually made any terrible blunders on the field. Just lacking that X factor. So I would think that he was more like a good link team player like that former All Black flanker James Carter.

I dunno about India, they are weak as a national team, although they have a professional league called the I-league that has two seasons and expected to expand from 12 to 14 teams in 2009-10. It is classified as a Grade C league by AFC. (A-League is ranked Grade B, however if it has a Promotion/Relegation that can change to a Grade A. Only Japan has Grade A)

Has he thought about going for League 1 or League 2 in the UK now? He should looked at the Chinese Super League or Indonesian Super League which are both graded as B. He could chance his arm at J-league 2 as he can offer something different as a player and upgrade his football skills, he may even spin a chance at a lower/middle J-league 1 team. His physical NZ nature does give him something different. Like I have said, he hasn't done any terrible blunders and is reasonably solid team player and so a team need that journeyman type player.

Anyway good luck.AllWhitebelievr2009-07-02 01:15:32

I'm still not throwing away my cardboard cutout...

Shame we couldn't keep him, he's a class bloke and a decent utility player, much better than Mulligan (I wish they could just swap contracts...) All the best Jeza.

I'd rather have Long John Silver at right back than Mulligan.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.
