Rugby ones get as many complaints as Dewy...Merhts & Marshall seem to be the worst of the lot...(They do have some good ones though)

Maybe Fox Sports should spend some cash to try and get some marquee commentators over to try and boost their TV metrics

Don't know about anyone else, but I would still prefer Dewhurst over the likes of Zelic (Even though Zelic isn't even NZ commentary) but still.

I would rather hear statements like "And Ryan Nelsen with a good Christchurch Clearance" - Bahrain game 2009

Over stupid comments like "BOOM WHIPPED IN THE NEAR POST BOOM!" or "COULD HAVE HAD A COFFEE AND A BISCUIT"

Ned's a lot better now. He's not trying as hard so it doesn't sound as forced.

Needs more GGW, combine him with Iffy and I reckon it would be a great combo

How does his "DO NOT TURN AWAY!!!" rant on the Adelaide game rate on that scale?

I wouldn't put it past him to be faking orgasms as it stands.

Reality is it is borderline unwatchable.  I like Ngata but I cannot let him off the hook, most of the stuff he says is absolutely meaningless (as in it is a string of words that put together add up to zilch).  The rest is obvious platitudes.  There is nothing on tactics, Harry adds absolutely nothing from his own experience, you learn nothing, there is clearly zero preparation other than Dewhurst talking about stuff he has heard on his talkback show.  It is SO bad.

hmmm, maybe not worse. As bad as, I guess.

Still, ESPN are the world's biggest sports broadcaster and they still had that knobend on there for years. There's heaps of shark commentators all over the world. John Helm? (the FIFA guy?) - He's awful too.

EDIT: actually thinking about, I think Tommy Smyth wit a Y is worse. He's really arrogant and abrasive and has an annoying voice on top of not really knowing much about the game. Dewhurst and co don't come across as pricks, just clueless and uninformative.

Tommy S might be a prick, but he knows a lot more about football than Dewhurst.

Maybe we need to buy Dewhurst a Motson-style sheepcoat. Should be easy in NZ, I would think.

I do apologise for this outright bigotry, but whenever I hear a US accented person talking about football I really find it hard to listen to let alone take seriously.

This is a shame because they actually are quite good at the game.

Bring back Gerald Sindstat. I remember in the 70's he did Liverpool V Everton (whom were wearing all blue) and he said at the Kick off "And for those of you with Balck & White TV's, Liverpool are in the all red kit." Piss funny at the time and even now. But he was actually a very good commentator. He also commentated on how the game was, ie, if it was a dull boring game, he was honest about it.

Yeah, I know about the personal issues but those charges were dropped.

No need to insult the guy, he tries hard. If on one likes his commentary then switch on to Piney while game is on. I'd rather just focus on the team doing really well then to rant about the guys at sky.

Doesn't help viewership though. I don't have as much of a problem with him as others but then I hardly ever get a chance to listen to him.

We need someone who can get fans outside of Wellington excited about watching the Phoenix on TV to improve our metrics.

I agree. I find it adds to the game when it's someone with an English accent commentating, similarly when someone with an American accent commentates basketball

I feel bad agreeing but the American commentator for the NBL on sky does feel like it legitimizes it a bit, even if technically it doesnt mean shark.

Against the grain somewhat..... but I actually like Zelic, he cracks me up... as long as he's balanced off by being paired with a serious commentator who does most of the talking e.g. Simon Hill.

Good point about Ngata whomever said that. The thing that annoys me the most about ex-players is the lack of insight they pass on. They've got to know more than us having played in professional environments, why doesn't it sound that way?

Yeah I like Zelic as well, he may say random crap but at least he's enthusiastic and entertaining.  You wouldn't want him to be the main commentator who has to fill in silences, etc. But as the second guy who adds colour he works well.

When the other options are Harper, Meredith, Slater or Harnwell.  Zelic seems like a god.

He's not Chotey though.

While living in Sydney in 1991 I watched on telly the goal he scored for Australian Olyroos against Holland in Utrecht, with 2 min to go.

In fact he scored both goals for Australia. As a result Olyroos went to Barcelona Olympics at Holland's expense.

I have a soft spot for him just for that entertaining goal, whether it was bad goalkeeping or not.

Maybe, but I personally think that English football style simply did not suit him.

He played excellent football in continental Europe for over 10 years, from Borussia through Auxerre to 1860 Munich. They were all top league teams.

And one thing in his favour - he was never a dickhead.
