Commentators for the Phoenix
almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
Does anybody have any idea who will be commentating the Phoenix games? I really hope it isn't Fred de Jong. They need someone with a dry sense of humour who can make puns (like some English Premier League commentators) but then is able to refrain from explaining the joke to us, because then it just gets pathetic.

GREEATT TOPIC!!!! HEll no please do not have Freddy i swear he ruins it when ur watching there games. If u watch the knights last year play in Australia they were soo much more exciting to watch because of the commentating. Do not have a kiwi commentate. Either Australian or English. Maby try get a guest commentator for the opening game perhaps or something like that. Tommy Smyth. Sportscentre always talk about the a league im sure he would appreciate being the first to commentate the phoenix opening match especially against melbourne.

Is he in Wellington these days or would they have to fly him from Auckland Jam, and do you think his intro music would be acceptable ?

Perhaps the cover of the Batman theme ?

Damn. I liked Freddy de Jong. I don't know why. As long as Fox Sports don't decide to do it themselves and send over Simon Hill...

I agree, great topic.  Let's hope SKY reads it huh?

Can anyone seriously believe that outa 15 posts on here, 2 people have said Tommy Smyth?  I know that it could have been said as a joke but I don't think we can even joke about sh!t like that.  Honestly, talk about a way to spoil a game.  ESPN are awful, and to think we have to watch a massive match like the Champions League final and to hear him popping up.

Worst thing is, I heard ESPN has the rights for the next World Cup.

I don't think it's the English accent itself Uncle Steve, it's jjust that all the good commentators, who as you say make the game sound better and more fluid, themselves have English accents!!  I was willing to give Fred de Jong some time but his voice has no tone and he just doesn't make the game more interesting.  He could do a job as a comments man but we need an out and out commentator.  It's a problem...

Katsarnos is good at presenting would not suit to be commentator and as James Dean above states De Jong would be a very good comments man but leave it at that.

Leave Elrick out all together and SIGN Gordon Irving!

Can't be Tommy Smyth - no no no no!!!!!!!!

Simon Hill is good but those muppets Harper, Slater, Trimboli are a joke - Harry Ngata isn't bad.

Fred is a bit monotonal but does make some good points.

"He" is still in Auckland and the intro music "he" played would probably be an interesting blend of The Eagles, Dave Dobbyn and Celine Dion.

Perhaps the cover of the Batman theme ?

Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah,
Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah,
Probably not.

I'd be all for Miles Davis - he can be a crack up, a gobsh*te, has the passion and isn't afraid to tell it how he sees it.  Footballs in his blood and there'll be more than a few Mexisms coming out too.....

Assuming radio sport do commentaries who will they use?

Iriving with Ngata and Davis (sideline)...

You'd need an anchor to work with Miles - someone straight he can bounce off.

I'd personally rather someone who didn't have a clue what they were talking about as opposed to de Jong. Maybe thats a bit, unfair but it shows how much I don't like his monotonous commentating.

jason costigan!!!!! the greatest commentater the warriors have ever seen. witty as hell. some of you may hate him but he's pretty on to it. doubt he can handle warriors, breakers and phoenix all together though and not too sure whether he knows too much about the game of football.

Martin Devlin & Miles Davis.... both football nuts and funny as hell!!

I don't understand the media obsession with Miles Davis.  He is now often on Radio Sport as a football "expert".  His only qualification is being English...it really is quite ridiculous.

Good commentators don't have to be funny, although a little wit goes a long way.  They just have to know when to speak and when to let the match speak for itself, and have a sense of the occasion.  Professional broadcasters are usually far btter at this than ex-players.

I vote Miles Davis. A character with passion, brutle honesty and the English accent which somehow makes it seem valid.
almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago

I would have Fred De Jong over Miles Davis as he is a clown.

If not Gordon Irving then please lets get someone intelligent and informative.
almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago

De Jong is last resort. I rather don vito from viva la bam over him. We just need to get an english and ausrtalian commentator

almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
elrick is a twat, De Jong always stuffs up his calls even with replays.... but how about Noah... he needs a job, honest, passionate and liekable. he'd be good with ngata.

Devlin wouldn't be serious enough, makes to many jokes.
almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
Yeah - still need an Irving type - straight man and professional. Give former players/clowns someone to bounce off.
