Tando's 2nd stint at thec club if my memory serves me correctly. Didn't he sit on the bench as short term injury/International duty cover for Mossy?

He put the ball into his own net during a corner once when we were playing Perth IIRC
Can't believe people think Velaphi is an upgrade, decidedly average in my opinion.
You are having a velaphi.
We are doomed! Any hope that Patterson might have brought will be lost as soon as we start Tando! Surely we could have picked up a CB to cover Dura and Rossi and work with the keeping stocks we have? If we were going to sign a keeper he needed to be waaaay better than what we have - Tando is not!
I actually liked the look of Patterson, the little that I've seen him. Very interested to see how he goes.

I remember Velaphi as decent. I can't say this from our current keepers. Upgrade enough for me.
What the Phoenix needed was an experienced pro keeper and now they have one, even if he had his weaknesses in the past.
Aged 30 and has played in the A-League since a teenager aged 18 - had two solid seasons at Perth early on when he started nearly every game 2009 - 2011, didn't play much in the league at the Victory after injury curtailed his appearances, starting keeper at the Heart 2014-15 in his last full A-League season.

Four Asian Champions League apps for Victory in 2011
Five starts in the J-1 League in Japan 2016 (26 times on the bench)
Fourteen bench apps in J-2 League 2017 - for the champions Shonan Bellmare.
Kept out of starting by Akimoto who played every game (signed from Nathan Burns' FC Tokyo where he was starting keeper in J-1)
A keeper with experience in J-1 and J-2 leagues in Japan (his mother's country) and the A-League will give good competition to Italiano.
Surely we could have picked up a CB to cover Dura and Rossi
We have three(Fox, Mullen, Lowry), five if you include Doyle and Goran. We just had a horror set of circumstances last weekend t leave us down four of them.

Same here, looks to be a good pickup. I'll put it out there and say he'll stick around next season and be better than Rojas or Kosta for us.
Italiano must feel so shark. First he's replaced by an 18yo kid with no A-League experience, then another bang average keeper's brought in to (presumably) replace him
The harsh realities of professional sport I guess.
Veflappi isn't just going to walk into the job. It can only be a good thing to have some competition for a starting place to bring out the best in the keepers. Sure we all know how disaster prone Mambo and Veflappi can be but as RR has pointed out the standard of keeping this season has been generally low and the howlers have been coming thick and fast.
Even if the standard isn't great it's been interesting to see the overall improvement of certain keepers like Young, Redmayne, Rizzo who not so long ago looked utterly clueless. So there is reason to hope that given enough game time and experience Mambo may start to more consistently show the sort of form that won us the Jets game. Assuming, that is, he has the drive to make that step up.

Tando will start next week.

To be fair since Smith got dropped, he's had enough opportunities to show that he could be our #1, and he hasn't. Feel for him on a human level, but glad we're trying something new.
Also, the whole thing reflects badly on the club as well. They SHOULD've known before the season started that Smith & Italiano didn't cut the mustard at this level. We're having a shark of a season, but with a better GK we could be 3-4 points up and that would make all the difference right now if you look at the table.

Bit strange for Italiano; probably had the best game of his life against Newcastle, then one error the next week in a 1on1 situation and he's goneburgers again.

This is also a complete cliche. Italiano isn't going to suddenly improve because he has competition - he was dropped for the first 6 rounds so he has always had competition. We've seen what he has and it's not A-League level.

But remember, all contracts were handed out with the coaching staff's approval...

We started the season with Italiano and Sail. Smith was only brought into the first team after the coaching staff saw Italiano and Sail in training.

Darje would have relied on the recommendation of the staff at the nix and Rado. That's why we've had such a big clean out.

If only we could have had the opportunity to have him start half way through the last season, and he had an opportunity to have seen and trained with the squad to have a whole off season to start building his team.
If only.

If only someone had of known that neither Italiano nor Sail were up to A-League standard, and we needed to recruit a keeper in the off season. Sadly that too was completely unforeseeable.

As the good old Polish proverb goes, "it's a long arduous climb before you finally reach the bottom".
Who do you want at the nix next season?
Off-topic posts will be hidden. There are plenty of threads to whine about the Auckland game, and this isn't one of them.
Who do you want at the nix next season?
Buijs to replace Rossi
Fewer GK on the books (ideally better ones, too)
Cristiano Ronaldo
Who do you want at the nix next season?
Feeling brutal
Keep:
Daniel Mullen
Goran Paracki
Dylan Fox
Nathan Burns
Matija Ljujić
Sarpreet Singh
Tom Doyle
Roy Krishna
Matthew Ridenton
Yoof (may as well keep):
Liberato Cacace (Youth)
Keegan Smith (Youth)
Possibly:
Andrija Kaluđerović - Needs to prove his fitness
James McGarry - Shows promise but maybe an attitude issue keeping him out. Surprised at seeing others called up to the first team ahead of him.
Tando Velaphi - Probably as a contesting first team keeper but let's see how he looks.
Monty Patterson - Unknown as we have not seen him at this level yet. Worried he might be a bit Appiah.
Waivering towards goodbye:
Michael McGlinchey
Sadly time to say goodbye:
Andrew Durante (Captain)
Cheerio:
Lewis Italiano
Scott Galloway
Ryan Lowry
Adam Parkhouse
Marco Rossi
Alex Rufer
Oliver Sail
Logan Rogerson
Concerns
- Massively short on available import slots.
- Where the hell do we find replacements?

All I did was answer his question and I did not even mention Auckland. I wasn't stirring. Good grief. What do I want at the Nix next season? A team of players whom want to finish first and not hope to scrape in 6th! Or should I say a team whom would not be satisfied with finishing 6th.
HN, good list.
Steven Caulker is looking for a club. Thinking of China. Perhaps he could come here as a marquee CB. Age is on his side.
Mostly agree, but I would move AK to keep, and probably Patterson too on a one year contract unless he flops completely in the next few weeks - I think he is worth a proper look.

Agree on keeping AK9 - I suspect he was already carrying foot injury before finally crapping out as his running looked suss in recent games. Given a bit of recovery (which might take weeks if it is planta fascialis) he is a game winner for us.
That's why he isn't a chuck. I'm just worried that he's fundamentally broken.
Who do you want at the nix next season?
New goalkeeper - not liking the look of Basalaj, maybe an on-loan Aussie like Tom Glover. Gleeson's name is thrown around a lot so he wouldn't be a bad option should his contract run out come 2019
Defense - Buijs in for Rossi. Knows the coach well, knows the style he wants, proven at this level. New fullback too, wouldn't mind a marquee there either tbh
Midfield - We need a Bonevacia-like enforcer. Ljujic and Paracki are good but nowhere near marquee quality nor near the quality of import every other team brings in, a famous quality midfielder would be great - a signal of intent too. Alex Song is free, as is Abou Diaby
Striker - Not much work needed imo. Of course keep Krishna (marquee if needed), the rest when fit can combine very well. If I was to sign someone, as mentioned earlier, Antonio Cassano would be brilliant and would be cheap as chips
diaby would be lucky to take the field

Unpopular opinion but I'd be more than happy to cut Paracki if he doesn't prove the quality he showed earlier in a reworked system. Can't remember off the top of my head when his contract ends, but I feel like we need a serious quality player in the middle of the park to boost us - I'm talking international, top 5 league player like Sydney, WSW and others have picked up. Someone with a gold card on FIFA if you prefer it that way.
Anyone else?
diaby would be lucky to take the field
crazy how he's only 31, he's got glass bones and paper skin
I'd keep Rufer - again, only 20 / 21 so has a lot of development still in him and has at times look the part - and others not.
Not to all our current goal keepers, no to Galloway, no to Parkhouse, no to Rogerson and no to Rossi and Durante (too slow for the A League).
Worth keeping if cheap - Mullen
