Why would Davilla leaving during a bye cause us issues?

I understood he'd be away for more than just the single week of the bye, but I would be happy for someone to correct me on this.

Nah it was clarified that him being in Mexico won't cause him to miss any games for us.

No but a very good endorsement by someone who's been there, done that like Stevey LongPins.

I actually wonder whether, given Libby's playing style, he'd actually be more suited to playing in England than Italy..

Does Libby have any English parentage? NZ's FIFA rank will make an English move much harder for him after Brexit.

IIRC the Commonwealth Visas that helped with moves for guys in the past are long gone.

Surely he'd be eyeing up Serie A as a priority? Has he actually been linked to any clubs at all at this stage, anyway?

As far as I know, his father was born in Italy and his mother in NZ from an Italian family, so it's unlikely.

Re: Serie A - I'm sure he'll look at all the offers on the table with his agent and choose what's best for he and his family. My point is that English football might be more suited to his style as less defensively-oriented than its Italian counterpart.

If is able to get [or already has] an Italian passport, he could play anywhere in Europe couldn't he?

If he is eligible for an EU passport, there are other places he can go to if he is not at Serie C soon (where Piscopo was).

Western European clubs would be OK with English as a first language, you do not have to go to UK for that.

I believe the original point here by RR was that with the UK leaving the EU, his Italian heritage and passport would no longer help with work permit requirements in the UK.

Well, it will depend on what sort of trade agreement is struck, if indeed one is – at the moment they're in a transition period where it's still as if the UK is in the EU.

But if there was to be no agreement, the UK would no longer be part of the EU's freedom of movement rules – having the right to work in Italy today means you have the right to work in the UK, but it wouldn't in such a scenario. As far as I'm aware keeping freedom of movement the same as it has been is off the table.

Note: I am not a trade expert.

Obviously there are a lot of EU area players in the Prem League. Pretty sure the Brits will allow some dispensation for visa players from the EU, if any footy club wants to sign them. Otherwise the Prem League would no longer be the strength that it currently is.

I. E. If the freedom of movement rules were very restrictive, they'd have an exemption.

Any whispers about Steinmann or Hoops signing on for another season? Obviously been a few casual rumours that Hooper is really liking it here now and Steinmann basically said he would be keen to stay, anyone know if we are in negotiations with them? iirc one of the commentators implied that we were looking at extending Devlin's contract beyond next season

Like both Hooper and Steinmann, but if we do want to free up a spot and have a bit more money to spend it would be Hooper that I'd cut.

Would bend over backwards to get Krishna back - we'd still have an import spot to play with. Perhaps a left back replacement?

Is David Ball really 8cm taller than Gary Hooper? According to the Phoenix player profiles, Ball is 183 cm and Hooper 175cm

so with lockdown and the virus curtailing the end of our season, who do people think we should resign who is off contract?
[last list of contacts I could find]
- Luke De Vere
- Gary Hooper
- Matti Steinmann
- Callan Elliot
- Te Atawhai Hudson-Wihongi
- Callum McCowatt
- Liam McGing
- Walter Scott

I'd say the top 3 names should be given priority. Epecially Steinman. Not sure the chances of keeping Hooper. He took a while to get going and our season might have been the shot in the arm he needs to go back to the UK and get a lower championship/league 1 team gig. De Vere has been amazing this year. Hope he can go another.

I wonder if the fact that all the leagues have shut down, that Libby might sign a 1 year contract to give himself security while the world calms down, and then goes next year. Could be good for both parties. But if he does leave, that bring Scott into the team, so he should probably be resgined or a replacement sort.

Surely at the moment the normal rules can't be applied, re signing players.

Situation maybe clearer come end of May (when understand these contracts all finish), however at the moment Nix have a business with virtually zero income - presume there is still some sponsorship dollars coming in - but continuous weekly expenses, including wages. You can't just ask Welnix ownership group to keep throwing money in, without looking to trim those expenses.

If all that off contract group were let go, to cut the wages bill immediately, you couldn't really blame the owners. Who knows a few months later they may pick up some bargin replacements, if a few clubs/leagues around the world fall over, ie there is a sudden over supply of unemployed pro footballers.

There will be a lot of talks now happening between Welnix, Dome/Gill/Talay & the players. Are the players prepared to take pay cuts? Are they prepared to take bigger pay cuts, to try hold onto Hooper and/or Steinman? ie make individual sacrifices for the 'greater team good'.

Steinman & Hooper (if made offers), then need to consider what may happen in Europe when those leagues re open, and their chances of finding alternative jobs up there.

The Nix may also be looking for some Govt help. But people will point out why should govt money be used to help pay the wages of professional footballers, most of whom ain't NZ citizens.

It's a messy complicated situation, that will continue to evolve over the next few months. Ain't simply a question of who does Talay want to keep on.

Assuming there will be cost cutting. I see Hopper being too expensive. Real shame, he and ball were forming something special on the park. But I can see the virus getting totally out of hand in India. maybe we have a chance of getting Krishna back here. He is a NZ citizen now after all.

Would love to see De Vere re signed. A bit concerning he is currently back in Brisbane. I'm sure Fowler will be in his ear.

NZ and Australian players like TAHW, McCowatt, Scott etc will be on lower wages. So are likely targets by the club to re-sign.

Steinman has been fantastic, would love to see him re-signed. But big decision for the club on him, with Rufer, Wilson and Devlin also covering DM.

It is too early to predict if the current season will actually be "completed", let alone if the next season will actually start in October.

My own view is that  - unless Welnix have bottomless pockets - contracts ending at the end of "this season" will not be renewed unless we have a clear indication there will be a "next season".

Agreed, the question of whether or not there will even be a Nix this time next year is the only real issue for me at the moment.

Sadly i think this also, think Jacinda has made it clear that the borders wont be opened in a hurry. If things start to get back to normal internally i wonder what the chances are of NZ Football letting the Phoenix compete in some capacity until the A League returns to normal. I fear for our future if we are unable to take part in any A League relaunch because of border control issues.

Remember, we are not operating in a bubble here, if little to no football is being played elsewhere in the world and teams everywhere are shedding players and/or wages - we have every chance to retain whoever we want in much the same way as if the landscape was rosey.

Correct. We may have a better chance of seeing an in-country domestic travel restrictions lifted sometime after locality (within a city, within a district) movement restrictions are lifted.  It may be that a domestic competition will be on the table here before we see La Liga or EPL back in action.

Well Perth Glory stood down all there players so im sure the Nix will do it next, just cant see any player wanting to stay now -Ball and Hooper will deff go to Roar now a nd the rest are easy pickings for Bulls FC.
