it’s a loss just on paper though isn’t it? It’s an investment more than anything else. If the club is serious about continuing after all of this, it needs to keep the academy

That’s easy for us to say, though. Got to come to a point when the owners decide if they’re happy to keep losing money on this club... this year was the first in a while where I thought they were actually acting like a big club.
Unfortunately players will be the last to know, but it sounds like it is actually gone

Not sure how the academy is a paper loss. Maybe I'm missing something.

If my house is worth less this year, compared to last year, and I don't sell me casa sure that is a loss on papel.

But if I'm chucking money at an operating real time business every month, because income is lower than expenses, that's all so real and not much fun.

Sarpreet transfer fee reportedly $750K - $1M from memory.
Did Nix get anything for Joe Bell? Tyler Boyd?
They should get more for Libby in the next few months (more likely January now).
Ben Waine in another year or few.

Do Academy player fees still include school/board for non Wellington players? I assume so, but not sure of revenue split between school and club. Regardless, coaching staff, travel, kit, training venue hire all add up.

The Nix Academy has great potential. But to get close to break even the club needs to be selling 2-3 minimum academy players every season is my guess. They need to be adding players to the pyramid and working on developing relationships with likely football markets.

Or to be gloomy, if they're giving up on the academy they're giving up on this model of the club, as there isn't much of a future for the A-league seen

Wow some of you really are depressing with some of your guess work negativity across multiple threads. Think I may just give it a miss until we hear from the club. Do have to love how some make comments and if they gave a seat at the Welnix table.

probably not this recent post..

"Love your optimism but as I said I cant see it starting anytime soon or if it does our participation will depend on a number of factors. Even with a contract not sure I would be keen on coming back to play to be locked down in Aussie. Because really cant see our borders being opened any time soon. If they are then you will be quarantined upon arrival. Which would necessitate the Nix being based in Aussie.

Really hope im wrong but if you read between the lines on whats being said by various people we arnt opening up any time soon"

Being optimistic.

The way things are tracking we could be down to level 2 in the not so distant future. If that's the case I'm really looking forward to domestic grass roots football starting up again. Junior, school and club.

I think local sport will play a big role in helping us deal with all of this, for families and local communities.

Agreed. Even if we don't get the A-League back anytime soon, having grass roots back will be great.

Community football, and all other community sport, was postponed even before Level 2 was announced. I wouldn't expect it start before Level 1, if then.

i would not be keen to return to local sport for a while, large groups in close proximity are a great way to spread any flu like infections. in wanganui we do not have many known cases of the virus but another person was just found to be positive yesterday with no overseas travel and no contact with any other cases so he must of got it locally.

Do I remember correctly that Robertson said that they'd look at guidelines and possibilities for training under L2, but only for professional sport? He was definitely asked about it, but I'm struggling to recall the details.

How long does the coronavirus last on surfaces?

It is not certain how long the virus that causes COVID-19 survives on surfaces, but it seems to behave like other coronaviruses. Studies suggest that coronaviruses (including preliminary information on the COVID-19 virus) may persist on surfaces for a few hours or up to several days.

It was in the context of the Warriors but he spoke about sport in general. It was when he was giving the daily presser rather than PM a few days ago.

that is not what i am saying you are reading too deeply, he obviously contracted it from someone somewhere in wanganui who may not be showing any symptoms and is walking around the supermarket, the pharmacy, the tinny house down the road or wherever without realizing they have the virus.

Every fudging football thread ends up as a Corona thread - I get why; but please take it to the the Corona/Doomed thread when it goes off topic. Locals in Wanganui catching a virus or syphilis is not Contracted Players. It's like cray cray bad off season discussion.

Definitely not a positive sign. This was where we had a clear competitive advantage over many of the Aussie clubs. Curious though, what are the other private academies doing?

Whats the big deal about Matti only has a couple of months left anyway. They said some stuff today don't see why people think they need to be airing every thing they are doing. They have done better than some other clubs to keep paying players yet some still want to give them greif..

You'd have to think if they're cutting costs then Steinman is expendable - no contract next season and similar player to Rufer which sucks because he's a great payer and said he wants to stay. Hopefully they can find a way to get Davilla back for the finals.

The most well-publicised returning of citizens from New Zealand during the lockdown so far has been to Germany. Given his contract is set to expire on May 31, and that the other visa player on an expiring contract had already headed home (Hooper), it was reasonable to wonder if he had taken the chance and returned home – with those repatriation flights now done it's going to be complicated getting back to Germany from New Zealand any time soon.

Instead of answering a simple yes-or-no question, the club went with a "no comment". Even funnier now that we've established that he is still here, which makes you wonder what the obfuscation was all about.

Maybe he has committed to re-sign but no point announcing anything till they have an idea about whats going on he might have thought he was better off doing lock down over here. Just seems at times some want to have a crack at the Phoenix no matter what they do. Really don't see the point in them making meaningless statements when they don't even no whats going on with the A League.

Matti Steinmann is still in New Zealand. Answers the question.  'No comment' just makes it a story. Maybe they did it so we'd have something to speculate about?
