Contracted Players - Return of the Long Pins
Awful news. I can only hope there's no sinister underlying reason behind this.
Thanks for the memories, Steven! One of the most important players in club history, easily
Off to Western United? Or back to the UK?

Ouch. That's a MASSIVE loss to the team. He's the best defender we've had on the books from memory - not to mention his experience and as a Captain.
Combination of pay cut and another hub, not that attractive. Jet ski obviously hasn’t made it to Trade Me yet.
Sadly may not be the last to ask for an early release.
I’d be worried about Davila. Actually would have picked family men like him and Ball, leaving ahead of Taylor.
of man,
I guess this is gonna be the state of the league for a few years to come.
Steven Taylor leaving is the worst news ever. Hopefully he's going back to the UK, wish him all the best anyway.

Assuming the league survives for that long.
Davila and Ball still contracted for next season (assuming they wont be terminating their contracts as well). Any word on Matti? Seems like it may have been the last of him as well?

2022-23: Alex Rufer
2021-22: Steven Taylor (I), Tim Payne, Josh Sotirio, Reno Piscopo
2020-21: David Ball (I), Ulises Davila (I), Stefan Marinovic, Louis Fenton, Oli Sail, Brandon Wilson, Cameron Devlin, Ben Waine
Off Contract: Matti Steinmann (I), Gary Hooper (I), Luke DeVere, Te Atawhai Hudson-Wihongi, Liam McGing, Callum McCowatt, Callan Elliot, Walter Scott
You’d have to assume Ball and Davila will be gone too.
Wild to think he was only here for two seasons, the performances he put in along with his attitude and passion for the club made it seem like was one of our own for much longer. I hope we find out why, considering he had two years left on contract and had stated he wanted to end his career here. Farewell Long Pins, the YF sure will miss ya :(

Well, he'd already taken a big pay cut just to finish last season, the salary cap's being halved, the clubs' incomes have taken a massive hit, the Nix players are facing the prospect of a season-long bubble in Australia, and the future of the league is not assured beyond next season. Other than that, it's got me beat...
Good luck Steven Taylor.
And what pisses me most of, it is likely we start again with a new setup and I have to listen to another year(s) of excuses if we don't perform. This year was the best chance to win or get close to win something and we stumbled after the break. And most people: ah yeah, next year.

stuck on 49 caps for us too, sad to see him go, especially after he'd just signed a 2 year extension

Not sure what some of you expect the players to do there has been virtually nothing g said about next season apart from they might have to take a pay cut. There has been no indication when the league will start and like most they need some certainty about where their money is coming from.
Suggest you brace yourselves as think we are some way off from what things will look like. That is if there is a league with us in it at all.
Fudge. For all the players we managed to keep over lockdown we're now hemorrhaging them like crazy.
it will be interesting to see where Steven ends up, I assume the uk
he came to us from league one so a couple of years later you would think best case there or worst case league two
Will be missed. Think he must rank as the most positive player we have had.

so are all the other teams, we were one of the lucky teams to keep all our players during covid
gutted
reality is starting to bite big time

Rumour that he's going to India too.

Could be an interesting watch in some games Taylor against Krishna and Williams then facing off against Hooper
Must say it took me by surprise, I'm sure the club would have really wanted him to stay. My next big concern is Uffie

Gutted doesn't really cover it. Been superb for the club and doesn't really bode well for whatever the future holds. Fudge you virus, fudge you. I wish him well, don't blame him one bit.

Oath. I wonder how the teams are gonna manage rebuilding. I reckon Vic will struggle to get back on their feet after an already poor season. Just hope our youth continue to look promising ?
Odisha FC have already included Stevie in their squad
???
Wont be missed at all, anyway with the wage cuts we just cant keep imports like Taylor hanging around. Next season is gonna be bad, we will have a heap of NLP players mixed with some NZ domestic guys just to put a squad together. Wooden spoon here we come!.
Interesting so many A League (Nix really) players heading to/are in India when their level of football is so poor. No fans there either, even before the Bat virus. Hope its a temp thing and we get to see Steve, Gary and Roy back in yellow after all this B/S over.

stopped being funny a while ago mate
Assuming they get a “low cost” A League up and running next season I don’t think we need to be too despondent about our chances. OK it looks like we may lose most of our imports but every other club will be in the same boat. If we can keep our kiwis and currently signed Aussies and dip into the local competition for players we will do OK IMO. The other nine ALeague sides will be scrapping over the talent in their State leagues plus they have long neglected their academy’s. We however have done a great job developing local talent. Plus we will have almost sole rights to the local talent pool. I would rather be in our situation regarding players than most other clubs.
Not living in NZ anymore means I am out of touch with the domestic comp. Anyone got any suggestions on what players might make the grade? I remember there were some useful imports at Auckland City a few years ago. Anymore Singh’s or McCowatts out there?

Unfortunately not really true, as any player coming out of Ole (McCowatt being a one season exception) is bypassing the Nix. Ole grads currently make up a big chunk of the NZ talent pool.
I imagine some of the Kiwis at ACFC would definitely be keen on a crack at the A League. Whether they are good enough I don't know, but many of them have overseas pro experience. Maybe they are on less coin these days at Kiwitea St. It's coming up 3 years since ACFC were last at a CWC. Lewis, Doyle, Adam Mitchell, Andrew Blake, Myer Bevan. Cam Howieson has reportedly turned down the Nix before. Is 32 year old Emilano Tade worth a look? Supersport in South Africa (the Sydney FC of SA) were sad to see him go reportedly, but less sad to cut Brockie loose.
McGarry has obviously been mentioned. Jack-Henry Sinclair has fans. Ridenton and Roux (not that the Nix need another RB) are 2 off contract Kiwis in Australia can think of. With such a long off season plenty of time for Talay to invite in domestic players to trial, as the existing squad comes back in for pre season training.
He also has his Australian youth network to tap into, but is going to be problematic getting any young Aussies over to trial for awhile. Even worse re looking at any available Kiwis in US or Europe. But I guess as per usual what new visa players are picked up will be key. Might not be until January 2021 transfer window (still exists?) that those signing(s) are nailed down. Gives time for the Nix accountant to tell Talay/Gill what their budget is.

I'm an ACFC ST holder. All of those you've mentioned would be good enough to make the step up, with the exception of Doyle who imo has already proven he's not good enough for the A-League.
I do wonder if part of the problem is with the money/lifestyle they're on in Auckland and with the introduction of Auckland United, it might make it a bit more challenging. I've read previously that Howie made more money playing for Three Kings and ACFC than the Nix would pay him.

Interested to hear that - in my eyes, of the players Coochie listed (and leaving Doyle aside for now), only Lewis is close to being ready-made A-league player. Tade is also interesting, he doesn't have the work rate to be a solid professional footballer, but has the ability to get you a goal out of nothing, and in a watered down A-league that'd be a nice quality to have.
I used to mock people saying that Ufuk Talay would be poached. Don't I feel stupid now. (Yes, he has a contract. So did our captain.)
The reason I was so gutted about how this season ended was because I had a strong feeling it would never, ever get that good again, and it looks like I was right. Kind of hope that this is the end of the A-League because it certainly looks like the end of our club, and as long as we take the Smurfs and the Tards with us that's okay. See you at the Handy Prem next year, I suppose
A new dawn begins for 2021.
No club will have the player budget from TV rights again

I mean that was happening anyway. Just the rest now too...
