IS Costa good enough to be considered a genuine prospect for the Phoenix?

Obviously living in WGTN already would be a big benefit.
And he is a proven goalscorere at the NZFC and Local level. But is that enough?
Perhaps he'd not be a regular starter in the first team, but could he be viewed as a good young signing as a third striker? Personally I've not seen him play, as I didn';t make it to any TW games this season (naughty me). I'd appreciate feedback from those who have both seen him play (either NZFC or WGTN league games), and have witnessed A-League games first hand to get some idea of comparison.

Ive seen him play 4 games this season for olympic and by far he is able to score goals and reak havoc on defences and can quite clearly make an impact when needed. He would be a great addition to any team as he offers quick accelerations up front and a nice touch and finish. I mean you be the judge...come along to Olympics next home game and have a geez yourself. The stats speak for themselves.

seen him play a few times for TW in the season just gone, think hes a young player with a lot of potential and i personally think he'll step up with a decent squad around him?
almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
Yeah I agree that he would be a worthy squad player. His pace is electric and can pull the trigger at the end of his runs. Could cause trouble if he came on late in a game. He did for TW before he became a starter. Great investment in true NZ talent.

With Costa and this Chilean Australian as two U-20 players, plus I'm guessing Brockie, I reckon we might have more than the required three.

Even if he isn't now - he will be soon.

I think he's got a lot more potential than Brockie...plus he's flexible in that he can play up front and out wide (think Lionel Messi type player, short and skillful with great balance).  But he's still learning his trade, more one for the future I wouldn't see him getting a lot of game time.  A year in a professional environment would be great for him.  And with the 23 man squad you can carry someone with the purpose of development.

well ive refereed a couple of olympic games this season so far, and he has caused the defence a lot of headaches with his blistering pace and skills. i reckon he would be good enough to sign
almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
He wasnt good enough to make the u20's so maybe another year away from being good enough for Phoenix. Definately a propsect for the future if he stays playing in NZ.
He will also be away in August (and leading up to) for the u17's world cup.

Tell you what nightz, I won't be surprised if he makes the final U-20 squad for the world cup... depends if they feel he is up to both.

I feel that Costa has the talent to make headway in a league of this calibre, he may be young but he does show the flair and technique beyond his years, i'm picking that an A-League contract would be the perfect medicine for 1-2 seasons before maybe heading off shore to take up a contract in europe. So many clubs watch this league with interest and knowing costa, the passion and commitment he has to his football, he can go along way.

The best 16 year old I have seen for a long long time.

Just another comment, Costa is definately good enough for the 20's and the 23's remember they do not want to burn the boy out!
almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago

Yeah Costa is a great player and ambassador to the sport. I would love to see him succed in the A-League and then in Europe, and there is no doubt that he is good enough.

He is exactly the sort of NZ'er we need to sign as a priority and the beaty with Costa is he can fill on of the under 20 spots.

costa was good enough for the u20 squad but can only play in one age group world cup and choose the u17's.

Not only that but he has also already played for our national A team below the All Whites.

He'll be there.

Dont sign him.

He well on sit on the bench cause he is'nt good enough to start at this level yet.

He'd be better off playing in the NZFC were he'll get plently of game time.

Costa Barbarouses scores twice for Olympic over the weekend!

Was anyvody at the gournd and can write up a review of this game (esp. Costa's performance)?
Was Mr Herbert at the ground by any chance?

Surely Ba-ba will be on the youth roster for the Phoenix. . .

I think he would be a great score for the Phoenix. I saw him play a couple of times in Dunedin for TW, and for my money was the most memorable player in any of the NZFC matches, certainly in the last season, and maybe before. I was stunned when I found out he was as young as he is- his ability and pace with ball at feet was excellent. Great to see a young NZ attacking player with the skills and confidence to run at defenders, and to continually make things happen.

I went to the game on the weekend and what a game it was. Ill give you a quick summary on what went down, First 5 mins Costa scores from making a great run down flanks, cuts into goal mouth and slams it past keeper.

Unitd equalise minutes later, Half ends in 2-1 Olympic having the better of the chances. barry lewis heading in a great cross.

Second half Olympic miss over 5 chances to put United away, Costa missed a simple 1 on 1, twice, first staraight at the keeper then he tried to chip him. Overall Costa's 2 goals should have been 5. Raf held midfield of Olympic. United had a 8min spell but couldnt finish either. Final ball was lacking.

Then after 12 chances missed by Olympic we finally put 3 more past united to the thanks of Costa, Raf deGregorio and Mikey Halikias.

Costas performance overall was good, he could of easily had a hat trick under his belt but played great and his pace made the differnce once again, some tough offsides calls but thats football.

Olympic 5-1 United, fair score.

Good news, some much needed pace and goal scoring ability.

If this guy reaches his potential he won't hang around in the a-league too long im sure, but i hope the a-league can grow bigger in the coming seasons to keep these players.
almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago

Yeah too true. Even if A-league was up there, the prospect of leaving to go play in England or Europe is quite an invitation.
