Not quite as good as the Christmas break were there's often an eerie silence along Lambton Quay.

That's because most people are embarassed by the santa parade....

What an awesome crowd at that Sydney derby!!! Here's my opinion on bigger crowds to achieve this we need to create a spectacle , yes winning football is important but it's you guys the fever that will bring the casual fan. It's the crowd experience that you can't get at a rugby match. If you guys grow and get bigger and stronger and louder the fans will come. I've got mates now that are fans because we have taken them to the games when we know there will be an atmosphere and now there hooked we take regular trips to Wellington and go to every Auckland game.

I love the Phoenix !! I mean damn I named my dog Phoenix but it's for the singing and the passion of the crowd more than the football we play.

Grow the yellow fever and they will come!

I'm generally a fan of what west sydney are doing but I'd like to see the state of the RBB if they finished 9th then 10th

empty stadium, like it was toward the end of the game we were beating them last season and before their winning run in their first season.

I think you're missing the point I'm saying look at it as a spectacle peopel ie. the casual fans are going because of the atmosphere they create. I'm not implying you guys need to start rioting.

Can just never resist a dig at the RBB.

Think it was just a perfect storm for WSW - they've been crying out for a club for a long time, and the run they went on was incredible. If we did that in our first season I guarantee we would have more season members now. We've obviously missed that boat though..

What was our home game unbeaten record back in 2010? 20 odd games? Covering two seasons?

That drove our crowds upwards - winning home games and getting home playoffs.

Wasn't our first season but very relevant to the WSW comparison.

What WSW and the RBB are doing is generally great but at some point they are going to have to deal with being not as successful.

If you think the angsting is bad here sometimes just wait until that happens...

'Kick For Cash!'

Lucky ticket holders will be given a chance to win a share (or all) of $60,000 during the OFC Presidents Cup tournament at Trusts Stadium, Auckland, 17 - 23rd November.

All you have to do is

1) attend

2) get lucky

3) kick a football 30 metres into the back of a Ute.

There're passionate enough to carry themselves through the low spots and fan power boosts ticket sales, boost merchandise, spend up on better players. ..its the money go round.  The trick is to invest in an academy.

In case it missed it over the weekend, Tony Vietch reckons the Phoenix would get 15,000 to a game in Whangarei

Go home Veitch, you are drunk. I reckon you'd get a decent crowd, maybe 7-8k but if you want 15k, go to Hamilton. I think they would get 15k there. Also think Hamilton are due a turn. They would get Auckland and Hamilton folk turn up and Hamilton Stadium is rectangular - ideal for football.

Are there even 15,000 people in Whangarei?

Estimated 52,900 in 2013 (Wiki) but for the whole district there is 74,463 people usually live in Whangarei. (Stats NZ)

They got about 18 last time didn't they? But it comes down to the novelty factor compared to getting that week in and week out.

18K last time.

Whangarei is a two hour drive from Auckland and I think two flights from Wellington. Both would put off a good chunck of fans from outside the region.

And you aren't going to get $69 flights like you can get between Welly and Auckland.

Whangarei do have this thing about getting out and supporting things. The league, they had that game where that dude with the massive ears that played for Wellington retired. Considering there is not much up there, they could do ok but 15k would be stretching it. Mind you, how did Dunedin go for the Phoenix

I posted this in the other thread:
So I awaiting the Dom Post article about how cricket is doomed and its the end of the sport with only 11 men and security turning up to the North v South game....

I think any reporter with ANY sense of smarts (and that's scraping the barrel bare) would realise that with that game getting fuck all, Lions crowds around 2K, the Phoenix crowds look great by comparison in shitty timeslots. But I doubt they'll take pot shots at those sports. Wellington folk may be turning into Auckland folk and becoming apathetic to live sport. (this is not a knock at Wellingtonians but more highlighting an obvious point)

Was there really only 11 people for that North vs South game.. That is terrible.

That is the thing, we want more numbers at our games but when you compare what other sports are getting the Nix aren't doing too bad!

Napier has a similar population of 60K. They got 9,020 with a good chunk coming from Wellington. Couldn't see Whangarei beating that.

You have to include Hastings, it's so close, and then puts up the pop to ~130k

What percentage of Wellington-based fans has tended to make up the crowd at 'home away from home' games? Surely anywhere that requires more than one flight or that you can't drive to in a day would be a disaster.

Quiet right. Based on those proportions you'd be looking at a crowd of 6-7 thousand I reckon.

They were talking about it on Radiosport this morning and they said that there was 15 people and security. I think I flicked past it on TV at one point and thought to myself that it was completely empty.

Sky really have this thing about having a 'sporting event' on in that Friday 7:30 slot. From about Feb to Oct, its rugby but you know what, it would not kill them to leave it idle. Friday night cricket (and it was discussed on this forum this year or last year I think) does not work. TopLeft may be better placed to comment on that.

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

Shows it is about TV. During the summer though you would expect people to get out more as one of the sad complaints is people dont go to because of the weather, but I guess between deciding on beach and beers or cricket more people choose the first one.

Any thoughts pertaining to Friday night 7:30 I assume starting time... my guess is this is the best time slot if next to a major CBD and second best if not... with the best time slot being 7:30 on Saturday night ...

How far is the cake tin from the CBD and given the Drive Bys have just been made Asian Champions could this bring some extra's...

could be wrong but I don't think that time slot does as well as you'd think. 730 is too long for people to wait around after work, and too short for people to bother going home then back out.

Around 1k from one end of the CBD and the only people who would care about the ACL win would be visiting Wanderers fans.

Crowd numbers tend to be around the same regardless of kick off time but the night games tend to be a better zone, so better atmosphere. What you gain from people having a night out, you lose on families not wanting to take their kids out so late.

Surely people who want to go to the game would still be having a beer in the office?

I think that is spot on.  The people that hang around are the 100% football supporters who might go and have a few beers with their  mates first.
