We could organise a huge match fixing ring which 'fixes' every a-league match so that the home team always wins and therefore the fans go home happy. Solved
wellington suprisingly is one of the best supported teams regarding crowds considering the size of wellington. we do extremely well against the likes of sydney and brisbane who almost have the same population of nz.
but yea I think the australian crowds have some serious sorting out to do. match fixing might just do the trick.
Get some military groups to take over the respective cities and force people to go under threat of death. And even though they're forced they still have to pay for the ticket. It's the only way.

AFL has finished for the year, NRL is about to wrap up, crowds should start to improve. Apart from Sydney. They just do NOT go to watch sport, end of story. Too much else to do, I guess.

I went to Melbourne v Phoenix in January 2008 at Telstra Dome and it was $20 AUD - that was for the cheapest ticket.
I think their Fever Zone equivalent was about $27 or something?
Not that expensive really, but not sure what the other teams are charging.

Im pertty sure they didnt mention the recession so surely that affects it as well? with less money around and people prioritising what they spend it on.

Exaggeration much? :) Wellington could still do much better.
Brisbane is the main difference this season IMO, they had good crowds last year but have been hit hard by high ticket prices.
While Phoenix have been the most successful A-League NZ team, our lack of any real success (playoffs) is why we don't getter bigger crowds. Look at the Warriors crowds when they were doing well and being talked up in the media. If/when we can make the playoffs, we will push the crowds up towards the end of the season / next year. Home playoff would be tremendous. Unfortunately I think there's still a bit of a lag from the Auckland teams who did so badly they were a bit of a laughing stock. Still - our crowds have been decent and respectable, but they can get a lot better - and I'd dearly love them to. In fact, being the only nz team, we could get a bigger crowd boost than the Aussie clubs do when they are successful. The whole nz beating aussie thing.
The recession will also definately be having an impact on crowds here and in Australia. Actually, if the public service basically get a wage freeze over the next five years, that'll be no good for crowds (with such a large public service population). Yellow Fever march on parliament?
Sign of the times? Crowds in England seem smaller this year too.. Especially for the teams that don't win.

Kids tickets are $18 though, this could be putting a lot of people off I guess.

Ok, this may be a nuts idea but anyway. Could we at some point have some deal with one of the rugby teams. IE: If you have a season ticket to rugby, you get admission to 2 free Phoenix games as well. And it could work back the other way too (they aren't exactly going to 'poach' our fans!). Or with cricket? You might find people who go to stadium for other sports, might get into Phoenix if they actually experienced it... The seasons don't overlap that much so there could be an audience there if they had some more encouragement.
Ok, it was cold on sunday but I was disappointed with our turnout. Pricing may well be one part of the cause. The game kicked off at a good time, It wasn't raining. And despite the result, surely the word is going around about the styl of play. I reckon we are playing better football now than ever before, even though we are not finishing it that well.

This may be slightly left field, but I reckon that the lack of TV replays does a real disservice to the average punter. Kiwi rugby fans are used to checking it out on the big screen time and time again, but the FFA's (or is it FIFA's?) ruling that there be no replays that relate to the officials' decisions (or could be otherwise interpreted as controversial) leave the average punter feel a little short-changed.
Not a lot we can do about it I guess, but several times on Sunday you could feel the crowd strain towards the screen and ... nothing.
It certainly detracts.

The referees get booed anyway, so why not show the replays. Security will nail any idiot dumb enough to take a decision against your team too personal.

Maybe professional ref's might help.
For sure reducing that ticket price would create more atmosphere, more buzz and more chance to convert people. Last time I checked 12k @ $20 is better than 6.7k @ $34.

First weekend of the school holidays = exodus of a lot of familys from wellington. shame we dont have a home game this weekend as that could have been something a lot of familys could have planned for in coming to Wellington for holidays. Also the wearable art's thing was on on sunday night aswell.yes - in fact no home game for another 4 weeks so the whole school hols are a lost opportunity.

KP, I think your crowds look poor because you're in a such a huge stadium. In a smaller ground, it'd like quite good but for the TV audience everywhere else, it looks quite empty. Am I right in this way of thinking??

Its a FIFA law to safe guard the referee. Its the same when I go to a Championship or Premiership game.
For those who used to support the Knights at North Harbour, having that big screen made the NZ refs look daft to everyone, esp themselves with some of their shocking calls that cost the Knights at least 2 or 3 genuine wins.

Yeah it was darn cold, my first Phoenix game and it was colder then when I've watched Leeds play in snowy conditions in the UK.
The crowd size though, whilst being a Knights sized crowd was better then some across the ditch. I have a feeling that Rugby and League, coupled with that wind played a big big influence.
At least it will be nice and warm when I watch the boys in the Gold Coast this weekend.

Nah, they've been much lower this year than normal. I think a combination of poor home form, unfortunate scheduling due to the stadium's AFL commitments (Thursday nights ftl), and the fact the AFL season was at the pointy end would be major contributors. Assuming the crowds may grow by 1000 with each win we may well be getting 12-13000 now as we'd be near the top. At the moment no team in the league with 1 win, 5 draws and sitting in bottom 3rd would get more than our 6794, Melbin excepted.
