Bolded are all off contract this season, so we can refresh the squad and bring in younger players. But is there anyone better?

Funny...I was just about to make the very same posting....."Rickie Herberts...Dad's army"

You are absolutely right....we have a an aged squad...only one player in the seniors under 25....the majority 30+.

Not necessarily a bad thing having defenders 30 plus but there is abig question mark over having lots of attackers over 30. When Pav comes on he looks like Usan Bolt compared to the rest of our attackers.

What we are seeing is a failure to recruit and retain young talent. We had guys like Rojas and Barbarouses but they are not here for various reasons. When you see teenagers like Amini and that other kid at CCM and lots of others throughout the A-League doing the business you realise how aged our squad is.

We are really seeing the problem that not having a reserve/youth team for the last 4 years has caused. When you look at all the kiwis at the Nix they are all from the class of 2007 and 2008 and they all are now pushing 30+. Here we are approaching 2012 and we have not been able to recruit or retain a single extra kiwi in the starting 11.

We have managed to paper over the cracks so far but in reality we will have to replace over half the squad in the next few years. This problem will be made worse with the shrinking of the cap on foreign players. We will have to recruit big time from Australia and NZ.

The arrival of the Welnix reserve/youth side can not come quickly enough. I for one find the future quite exciting. Guys like Lucas, Rowe, Lyndsay may well find themselves in a Nix shirt a lot sooner than they might have hoped. Time will tell if they are good enough. The next few years could be exciting times for young kiwi players.

I am afraid that Welnix's brave new world of

I made this comment abot the age of the players in the game thread on Sat, and never got one response.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

this will be a problem for us until we get a reserve team that plays each week and a yoof team! for now we need to bring in experience and ability we can't really afford to be blooding young players in our first team.

Yeah you are so right, we cant have Marco's and Kosta's in our team.

If you are good enough, you are old enough!

Marco's - are freeks not the norm, Kosta when he played was only able to show his ability as a sub, imagine what he could have done for us in a reserve team - got 90 minutes a week and pushed for a starting spot. Marco the same. Sure if your old enough you're good enough, but how does a manager see how good you are when he only sees you train. Game time for the youth is key.....

I agree we need a yoof team bad, but a Manager watching you train 5 times a week should be able to spot talent. We just do not seem to havemuch in the way of talented yoof on our radar at all

Lindsay looked pretty good running midfild for the Olympic side last week but as the prof says how is one game every couple of months going to let the skeleton coaching staff know how he is going.

Agreed, but it is a luxury we dont have ( A youth team) so to a degree it has to be sink or swim when a chance offers itself. Pity a chance was not gven to the likes of Lindsay a littler earlier in the year with our injury problems.

sink or swin in a league as close as the a-league is also a luxury. With the only NZ franchise sinking with youth players could end any chance of a team. Hence the targetted players are experienced a-league or better types, when ie next season we have a reserve team where our youth targets can play week in week out competitive football - not friendlies then we will see more impact from local youth - it's just around the corner but for now Ricki can't be expected to watch every ASB prem game during the weekend and nor can the club be scouting - we simply do not have the personnel to do it.

I'd be keeping Manny (I really hope we can resign him!!), and Sanchez,

I'd consider keeping Lochy and Paston,

Ward needs to prove himself imo

and you need to add Dura to the list and sign him up pronto

Who do you think you are kidding Mr Egmond?
If you think we're on the run.

We are the boys who will stop your little game.
We are the boys who will make you think again.

Cos, who do you think you are kidding Mr Egmond?
If you think the Phoenix's done.

Timmy Brown* goes off to town on the Newcastle Jets
And he comes screaming in the box, he's ready with his head.

Cos, who do you think you are kidding Mr Egmond?
If you think the Phoenix's done.

Bolded also includes the three youngest players who started.
