Daniel: Necessity or Luxury?

I'm sensing a schism in the recieved wisdom of the YF on this one (not surprising after his Jekyll and Hide (pun intended) performance yesterday).

Fence sitters need not poll - on current form you're either for him or against him.

On balance, I'd still have him.

Definitely have him. He can drift in and out of games but you can hardly accuse him of not trying. When he plays well the Phoenix win and thats a big case for having him... I think to make him a scapegoat from a poor midfield performance all round is a bad idea. He is a key player in the team and often has a hand in the goals and assists.

I think his workrate's actually pretty good most of the time. In fact, some games last year he was all over the show, up and down, left to right, desperately trying to get involved.

when he's not there we don't look as potent,we seem to lack just that little bit of extra flair when he's on the sideline (imo)

He can make all the difference but every now and then (like Gao) needs a rocket up the arse.

He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

I always enjoy watching him play.

I still question his fitness. Hopefully with Bertos, Gao, Hearfield around this will put the pressure on to perform every week as he still drifts in and out of the game too much

stupid poll in my view, sure, people can and will critisize him if he has a bit of an off game like last night, but he is generally a pretty consistant player and is very loved.

Many fans come to the game to see and cheer him and as long as he is fit and providing decent crosses and giving the team that little bit of extra creativity then there is no real reason not to start him

You know we belong together...

i can't believe people criticise daniel for 'drifting in and out of games'. if the only thing he did on sunday was that nice pass for the goal then i'm happy with how he played cause it was more than anything the rest of the midfield did. look was bertos achieved for all his sprinting around, nothing. quality over quantity is daniel.

To me we are missing someone with Felipes spark.. although he was a douche.. it seemed he could sometimes spark a game on.

ive got a song that wont take long, Adelaide are rubbish.. the second verse is same as the first.. ADELAIDE ARE RUBBISH

Daniel is essential to the Phoenix. He runs hard and sometimes it doesn't come off, but he has magic on those Cariocca feet of his so I would never leave him out of the team.

Wasn't he voted Wellington's personality of the year? Of course we love him. I remember during that first game of last year him coming over after (possibly the first goal) psyching the crowd up. People realy respond to the passion he has. Would be sad to lose that.

we need him

I have to be honest in saying that I'm a huge fan of him when he is on but when he is not, I'd drag him very quickly. The problem is not knowing which Daniel you are going to get. To me its a consistency issue. The guy is class, just not consistent.

I chose not to vote.

Daniel is one of our most creative players. All of our attacking midfielders offer something different and Daniel's flair is key as shown by his assists and goals. Would anyone else have made that pass on sunday?

We were playing far too many long balls for him to be effective yesterday. It was not solely his fault he had a subdued performance. I think he's being unfairly picked on. I usually find his work rate to be pretty damned good across the final third, in some games he covers every blade of grass in that area. Running around aimlessly is not the key to success especially if his stamina isn't the best, he'll only be less energetic for the times where he gets the ball in the right position and works his magic.

He's the man alright. drifting in and out of games with his skill is an advantage as he can strike when the opposition least expect it. He offers a dimension by drift to each side of the field despite being predominantly left footed.

His talent makes it worth the patience in him. His pass to Smeltz for our goal was excellent. He drags marking players out of position creating chances for others to exploit.

Daniel is the Man!

Hearfield as the boy apprentice - this guy has shown some great touches and moves in the two games I've seen him play.

Stoooopid has long been my middle name.

On the Daniel front, his pass was sweet, but to suggest that other Nix players could not have done similar (except Dodd) is perhaps casting aspersions on the team?

I suggest a Mod puts this out of its misery as my attempt to hook in some controversy has been hampered by not offering shades of grey.

He's lazy. But quality, i think he'd be more effective coming off the bench.

got to have him on the field, he may drift a bit! But at the moment he's our major creative force on the field, without him we would never have looked like scoring on Sunday. With him and Goa working a little harder we should see some excellent goals!

I think it was probably a bit tough on Daniel and Leo yesterday, seemed to me like they had trained all pre season and built their attacking game round Daniel, Leo and Lei Lei sitting behind Smeltz and akll having a bit of a free license to roam. When Lei Lei gets injured Kwasnik comes in who is a different player. I realise they are all professionals but the dynamic certainly would have changed.

it's been an good topic imo, because it got people to get off the fence and state the clearly impressive range of influences D can have on the game

good to see a few people noting the work he does off the ball, i wouldn't be surprised if he covers his fair share of grass if someone actually measured it

I'm inclined to keep it open HH  not for the poll but for the discussion

let the other mods or me know - one more time - if you do still want it closed

yeah I think you're probably right, Goa and Daniel seem to work really well together, similar styles and both given the right to move around the firld as the need to, neither Leo nor Kwasi work as well.

When he's on, he's on fire and is all over the park which is why the chant

"Daniel's here, Daniel's there, Daniel's every f*cking where la la la......"

even exists.

Im not a complete idiot, some parts are missing!

agree, miss Lei Lei big time which effect Daniel and Leo. Not sure what Kwasnik role was but he never matched Lei Lei 's input. Was Daniel 100% fit before the match ? - never looked happy from the start, but we need him to performe this season for sure.

guys, don't want to be rude, but please stick this in your f**king heads:
Daniel is the best attacking midfielder in the A-League. Especially the way he plays, he plays on the wing, in the middle, up front, he plays here and there and whenever he takes on a defender they literally sh*t their pants.
Gao is great too, but don't forget that he was nowhere to be seen last season. Daniel took a gamble, professionally speaking, and joined a never-heard-of football club, he loved it, he played with his heart and still does.

If anyone wants to have a go at someone, let's take it out on Dodd, shall we??
Sure, Daniel didn't play his best game but he set up the ONLY goal we scored. And what an assist that was. Wouldn't you have scored that goal as well, with such a great pass - I would have.

So, yeah he's utter necessity. And we need to back him 100% - all the way. Even if he were to have a crap start to his season, we need to make him feel welcome because he s the soul of the Nix and he's a fantastic player.

Coz I tell ya, if he goes, i'll think twice about renewing my season pass - and I assure that many others will too.

Gao will drift in and out of games. Kinda similar to Felipe. Daniel isn't lazy imo - I always see him tracking back and trying to tackle. (doesn't tackle well, but he tries :p)

Gao would be one of the fitness players isn't he? So I will have him over Felipe any day.

Anyway, he was nowhere to be seen last season because he wasn't playing in the A-league but was in Finland playing for MyPa.AllWhitebelievr2008-08-19 15:08:29
