Wellington Phoenix Men

Do we only sing when we are winning (or maybe score an equaliser)

Yes the game was dire yesterday, it was a bore and we played like..... (insert own adjective) but, gee the zone was quiet yesterday, apart from lots of inane chatter of people seemingly totally uninterested in the match.

A number of times chants were started, and just fizzled out, even the old faithful Wind rain etc....

Without wanting to get all RBB on it, are we an "Active supporters group" or just there for a natter and catch up?

Despite generally playing like muppets, we were never out of the match but our level of support was hardly inspiring until the final six or seven minutes.

I will probably cop the usual "well you start something then" which I did one of which caught on the other two or three just fell flat and fizzled out.

I don't pretend to know the answer, but I do know, in many ways I am jealous of what the RBB produce.

Think after two 5 goal drubbings in the previous 3 games there was an element of demoralised in the zone once we started looking poor.

Also a large number of the usual 'starters' were distressingly sober.

But agree.  Must try harder.

Too many people standing in there who don't contribute/follow and who can't be bothered learning lyrics.

First step towards the dark side. Being jealous of the RBB. Never be jealous of that lot. Never.

We will never be in a situation where the GCSB is monitoring football fans and that's a great thing. I would imagine there are dossiers somewhere in Sydney of most of them and their hooligan tendencies along with their 'its not fair' stance.

Never be jealous of them. They are munters.

True.... but jealous of the "noise" they produce. Certainly nothing more than that.

I also find that most of the zone clap along to chants, while only a small number actually chant. Makes things bloody difficult.

Nice to have Van Hat back.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

zone was disturbingly quiet.....when I attend withour junior I'm in 23 and scream and yell with the lot of you - when jinuir attends we are in 14 also chanting along when they get started - you lot were very quiet yesterday - understandable given the dire scenes on the pitch - but as the 12th man we should be amping up for the boys regardless.

Must say I find "Oh Wellington" particularly draining these days unless I'm drunk. Need a new go to chant, but easier said than done.

Yeah I think that's just the easiest one for someone to start. The rest its quite hard to know how to go about it. As such, its a go to chant for those who don't really like starting chants but figure its gone a bit quiet.

Otherwise you just have to start a chant, and hope that others join in (this is particularly risky if it has been quiet) otherwise you end up either belting out a whole chant by yourself or trail off halfway through out of embarrassment - alcohol helps get over this.

Whereas with 'O Wellington' if nobody joins in after that, you can just stop.

People know Oh Wellington. Therefore they will sing it.

People don't know, for example, Mossy You're Our Goalkeeper. Therefore the only ones singing it are a group of about 10-15.

Like Tegal said, Oh Wellington is a safe option, compared to the risky other ones.

Needs more "Carlos Carlos Hernandez" but with the exception of Napier where we had an afternoons prep it never gets going.

Football fans are inherently stoopid, hence the reason why simple works best. Complex chants may look good on paper but are difficult to pull off and get much traction with.

This chant gets stuck in my head for days after a match

I am over in aisle 24. I can't get over the fact that people stare at me, Bill, Anne, Sue when we get going....
FFS, it's a football match.
So many inhibited people about.

Such is life...  ;)

Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Come over to aisle 12 then and watch the fans staring at us giving the match officials heaps, supporting thr team and giving a who are ya when the opposition get a corner. Going to a Nix match is great therapy for getting ones emotions in balance. Leaving the bad ones at the stadium.

Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Never felt enthused to chant and sing whilst bored out of my skull.

Sure others can do it, but I'd rather we weren't like RBB and just there for a good old sing-song regardless of what's happening on the pitch.
