throughout most of this season I've question andrew Durante as captain. personally I dont think he has displayed quality football as a captain should. sure he has had some great games but I believe we'd be better of having Tim Brown captain for next season.

Well I think Brown has more passion and is more like R Aloisi and Brown is great for the AWs.

he's been decent. Just need him to be on the field more.

But he doesn't lead by example(e.g Moore, T Dodd) and doesn't inspire other players(e.g R Aloisi). Brown for me is in that second category and in football you need one (or both) of those two qualities IMO.wellyphoenixfan2009-01-11 23:43:08

I'd take Brown as captain ahead of Durante.

yeah thats exactly what I was thinking. does he inspire? does he lead by example? does he play with heart? Im sure he does do all that to an extent but tim brown for me would  the obvious choice. Im sure ricki would've made him captain if it wasnt for his injuries.

Yep i'd prefer Brown as well. He's a Wellingtonian and you could see that he felt that loss more than most. Nothing against Durante though - I think he's an able captain.

id prefer brown to because even though i might sound stupid im pretty sure  a New Zealand player actually cares about results a lot more than an aussie one.

I wont comment on that..
but i can kind of see what you mean.
Creating history in New Zealand would mean alot more to a kiwi

Durantes definetly able, lets just hope he's not out for too long with the hammy

Ill sort two problems out..

Ricki is coach
Durante is captain

Hopefully people will read this and wont think of starting up another thread.

I would like Brown as captain though tbh.

No issues with Dura as captain- he just shouldn't play against Sydney as part of his contract...

Dura is a good captain but i would like to see timmo given a crack with th armband. He seems to have more fire.

Dura is ok, just seems to be out of sorts/form at the moment. Brown could do the job just as well. I don't mind either really as long as Dura can not get suspended or injured.

How often are captains changed?  Unless the captain leaves the club or a new player comes into the club and becomes captain I wouldn't have thought the captain would change.  Its a pretty hefty insult to Durante if you took the captaincy from him and gave it to someone else in the team.

Tim doesn't need the armband to help lead the team and motivate them forward.

With all respect to Dura, I couldn't give a toss if he (or anybody else) is insulted or wants to have a wee sooky into their Weetbix... I want whats best for our team and our club, and if that means changing captains/coaches/trainers/players/management/mascots/ballboys/whoever... I don't couldn't care less, in fact, I'd be spewing if we didn't...

Do we want to be nice?, or do we want to win?

I've always maintained Dura was picked because he can give a post-match interview without resorting to ums, ahs, and horrible cliches.

I'm sure thats Bullsh*t.

Every player on the team, bar Lei Lei down, cares about this team....

I've been disappointed with Durante's leadership - with the benefit of hindsight McKain would have been a better pick - he has more presence on the park.

I have a lot of time for Tom Brown and his never say die attitude but I think, to be a title contender, we need 3 or 4  significantly better players in key positions - one of which is defensive midfielder (i.e. a Ross Aloisi). In a team with McKain and a Ross Aloisi Brown would struggle to get a start - your captain has to be an automatic starter hence, for me, Brown's not an option.

If the view is Durante's growing in to the role then keep him as captain if not go with McKain.
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

well in all honestly I'd rather have dodd and sigmund starting at centre back but because durantes captain we feel he needs to start every match.

who knows dodd may be leaving us

Durante is too quiet for me to be captain - part of the problem with the team though is that there aren't any natural leaders.  Brown would be best of a bad bunch.  Next year I would make Siggie captain - he's a Kiwi, he cares and he's been a revelation this season.

Given we (well, at least - I) don't know next years squad yet, how would we/I know who the best captain may be?

Again thats bullsh*t. I think in all likely hood all of the players in the team care about the final result, they all want to win and tbh I don't think they would care if they were representing there "home" team or Timbucktoo.

I'm not saying that playing for your "home" team isn't a drawcard, but I think once 99% of professional players are at a club all they care about is that club winning.

Daniel is a classic example, he came here as a professional footballer and from day one treated Wellington as his "home".

Shouldn't even be in your best eleven, let alone captain.

Jaza has an avowed aversion to Dura... think of Durante being to Jaza what Ricki Herbert is to Auskiwi.

Lies.

I just don't think he's that good.

You'd be better off with McKain + Dodd at the back. That's your best combo. Durante is pretty overrated, and doesn't come across as much of a captain.

And in saying that you just proved yourself wrong.
