Fever Fans Rally Around Captain Durante

Yellow Fever supporters have jumped in behind under-fire Captain Andrew Durante. Durante is staring down a fine from the FFA after being up front and honest with his post-match media comments following Saturday night's controversial loss to Adelaide.

Fever fans, furious about Jeronimo's dive and two glaringly wrong off-side decisions, have set up a donations page on website givealittle.co.nz where fans can make a contribution towards Durante's FFA fine.

Fever stalwart David Cross said of Durante: "He's just told it like it is. He shouldn't get any fine. Jeronimo should be suspended for diving, Sigmund's card should be withdrawn, and the FFA should take this opportunity to come down hard on diving and accept that the referee had a bad night. But if Dura does get a fine we'll help him out."

Yellow Fever's Facebook page has overflowed with comments in support of Durante, but Andrea Corrigan's comment sums it up: "Disgusted with diving cheats and v poor officials. Whip round for Dura's inevitable fine?"

Despite someone over my shoulder yelling 'first world problem' I have donated and would urge others to do so. This is the sort of issue that if left uncontested can cause the decay of a society... *exaggeration*

Already donated. More to send a mesage to FFA than anything else.

I reckon they will just caution not fine him.  Now they have made the laughable judiciary decision they won't fine Dura as a sop that they think will make everyone forget that this league now condones simulation.

Actually seriously - this would be a good cause (not the Australia bit - that's a lost cause).

That's a pretty good one actually. Funny enough for the media to latch on to as well.

I think that the widespread support of Durrante calling the officials shocking is wrong.  It is irrelevant if the decisions that they made were bad, and that he was frustrated when he made the statements, abuse of the officials is never appropriate and should not be condoned.

Durante should come out now and say that he regrets the statement he made, and cop any fine that the FFA throw at him.

I am not sure how I feel about the statements about Jeronimo - personally I think that comments like that should stay on the field, and it is bringing the game into disrepute.

Frankie that is just the soft resonse mate, it's time the officials were held accountable. When it gets to the season end and we are in third by 3 points what game are we going to look at and who will we think of? I agree with the fine, but also agree with Dura saying that Jeronimo was a cheat and the officials should have done something about it. The onfield ref/linos have failed - bring their reps and the game into disrepute, the panel have failed miserably too also bringing the game into disrepute - will they be fined, stood down - unlikely. Who wins from all this, Jeronimo and his fellow divers! The fans suffer, the future players suffer and all theose rugby boofheads who watch the news laugh and will continue to beleive that our game is full of dirty diving cheats.

I think everyone is just happy that we don't have to pretend like nothing happened because the players and club officials etc are usually 'above' calling it how it is. When it's as bad as it was in this case (the officiating and the cheating) it is refreshing to see the captain of our club call them out. I imagine Durante himself is sick of that sort of approach when it's as clear as day that the officials are making a meal of it. Ricki obviously is too.

I can see Durante being punished because the FFA have tried to say nothing was wrong with the officiating or the dive. Thus Durante's comments will be deemed unfounded and unwarranted. The FFA are a shambles and they have opened the league up to diving based on this example alone - undoing their work when they made examples of Perez and Baird. It was cut it out and keep it out or let it become part of our league.

Fuck this stupid game

If they don't want to hear it then don't interview a player when the red mist is still flying.

There is a reason they don't do it in the Premier League, because they know how a player will be if he walks off after being the victim of a farce.

Premier league players are interviewed a couple of minutes after games - hardly a substantial time to cool down if you are feeling aggrevied by a supposed wrong.

Durante saying what he did was understandable, but abuse of officials should not be tolerated at any time.  He should admit as much and any fine should be paid without any fuss.  It doesn't matter if the officials made a mistake or not - they are essential to our game at all levels, so nobody should condoning the abuse of them, let alone supporting it.

He didn't abuse them though, he pointed out facts (such as the offside goal that the assistant didn't give). Saying they had a poor game is not abusing them, calling them cheating bastards would be.

EPL managers rip into officials all the time in post match interviews.

Anyway - I agree that the support should be for having a go at the player not the comments about the officials (even though they were pants)

Officials make mistakes - that is a fact.  They do not have access to 5 different replays, from different angles and slowed down and paused to help them make decisions.  They make them instantly based on what they saw.  They are not cheating, and in every game both of the teams can highlight decisions that they are aggreived about.  You cannot tolerate abuse of officials becuase they were wrong.  For the good of the game, you cannot tolerate abuse of officials in any circumstance, let alone support it.

Didn't we get a warning after the Newcastle incident? That might hurt Dura's chances of getting off with a slap on the wrist.
