Elrich - Not doing enough to warrant his place?

I sorry if I'm wrong about this, but hasn't he spent a couple of seasons bench warming in England? If so it'll takehim at least a season to get back to his best, on that basis I've seen enough to want him here next season where hopefully he'll be on top form. Having said that I think he's good enough now to warrant a start.

I also think he was on loan somewhere in Finland, but HN probably knows more about this than me.

So far he hasn't done enough to be considered on of our "good" players let alone "marquee"  BUT as has been stated he has the potential once he gets back to 100% (should be very soon).  I think paying out a few more contracts might be the go ie byebye Cleberson hello Rees.

I'm still yet to see a Phoenix player up close yet. Grrrr.

you should of been at the shop on Thursday or Saturday

very pleasant bunch of guys although elrich was a bit grumpy when my son asked him to sign his retro ricki but then smiled nicely for my camera
have to say it was jam packed in there and like a sauna so no wonder he prob had enough

my boys have met them all

HarryPeters - apparently you can see them fairly frequently walking down Tory St, assumedly to Exodus.

Don't feel too bad. My claim to fame is being behind Daniel in line at Star Mart - not exactly glamarous!

Interesting point - I've found myself saying in frustration PASS IT TO ELRICH! more than once, as he jogs along waving his arms about (like he does - a lot!) to try and get someone to pass him the ball.

That said, when he does get the ball passed to him, and manages to kick it right into the first defender that comes near him rather than delivering the cross, one might have second thoughts about passing it to him next time I guess.

Half the time thats because they've passed it to him too late though!

Hmmm, undecided - he's no Juninho.

Anyway, who would you put in his place if he doesn't deserve his spot or needs to be benched? Ferrante?

thank god its not just me. hes a passanger at the mo, looks unfit and hides extremly wide on the wing. this guy is supose to be one of the best in the team.

I know, I know, wrong sport, wrong everything...but I'm envious of you seeing the great man.    If Elrich played with his determination and workrate.....

You saw the impact the other Elrich made for the Bogans when he received a ball out wide in injury time in the weekend, got in behind his man, then put in a pinpoint ball for Griffiths to head the winner.

Our Elrich saw plenty of ball against Adelaide, but didn't show any interest in running at his man (unlike young Costa against the Galaxy), and continually fed poor crosses in. The impact of getting to the goal line then sending a cross over that is coming back toward your incoming players, can't be under-estimated. Currently, Elrich is not providing us with that option.

Thats what I think, he's getting a lot of ball.  He got plenty against Adelaide, and in space, Daniel often had a lot of time to perhaps draw the defence a bit more to chose to give Elrich time and space, and constantly the same play was trotted out, get to the edge of the box parralel, and whip in a low cross into the knee of an oncoming defender.

Agreed, he's obviously been round to the Council for a trim.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Yeah, that's it right there. Take the ball to the byline and you have the defence at its most vulnerable if the ball is decently delivered.

Being behind the goal at the Melbourne game a few weeks back I got a good look at Elrich. That day I thought he had a pretty decent game, yet I got frustrated in the 2nd half when, having all the room and what seemed to me a better turn of pace than the Melb left back, he rarely tried to skin him on either side. We had them stretched and panicking but still Elrich mostly persisted with the early diagonal crosses; then in the last 15 he faded entirely.

I dunno, but it feels to me like he's not entirely comfortable with what amounts to an old-fashioned winger role.

I've also been a little disappointed with Elrich.

He never runs at his man. I can only remember him running at his man twice on Friday, and both times he took the piss, so why not do it more often?

Early crosses can be effective, but he needs to mix it up, he does it every single time.
And most of the time theres only Smeltz in the box and at least 3 defenders, seems like a low percentage option.

He needs to wait till more men get in the box before delivering, or just run at his man!

So, if he's not a winger, where else would you play him?

Wonder how he'd go as a defender? At least he'd be quick!

Moved from another site re Marquee Players

Question. Did Elrich ever play up the middle. His so called pace and a bit of bussling for the lose ball in the box may be worth a few. I dont think he put one good cross over last Friday. Mulligan and Bertos? Add  them to Daniel, Felipe, Brown and Ferrante and there are going to be so many balls going into the area that anyone with one league in the grave and the other on a banana skin should be able to score.

I dont know if he's played in the mid but he looks strong enough to hold the ball off players.  He seems to win the 50/50's aswell.  I think a good spot for him would be just behind the front 2,  he would be a bit more direct than Felipe and he's got a better shot

yeah i wondered that too...he doesn't seem like a natural winger, although I guess that's his main position (i don't know much about him pre-Nix). In the Adelaide game he was targeted by our players and got tons of ball, but if the defenders know he's just going to cross it straight away without attempting to beat his man and go further down the side, they can easily just bunch up in the middle and twart (that's a good word!) most of the attack
I like tautologies because I like them.

He has seemed a little lost when confronted with the "I've got to cross the ball where?" option, would really like to see him playing in the middle, that goal he scored came from the middle didn't it???

I've never seen a winger hit so many defenders in one game trying to cross the ball as I did watching Elrich against Adelaide.

He's getting into good positions but he's not doing enough to work room for the cross just hits it.

On balance, I would rather have Leo Bertos who does beat the defender and does get in good crosses and doesn't cost the earth. Then we could look for a true Marquee signing for next season.

I agree with most of the opinions here, but will venture to add that we got a lot of corners out of Elrich kicking the ball into defenders.  We have a great corner taker from that side in Daniel, and we have scored a few goals from corners.  Perhaps he is playing to a plan?

Its the blue boots !!! seriously though an average player at best at the moment and needs to get his arse into gear if he is gonna be on the payroll next year.

Well it didn't work vs Adelaide :P What was it, 14 corners to 0 or something equally ridiculous?

Totally agree with Mossy real lack of movement.

Looked a much better side when Lochead was playing on left of a back four combining down that flank with Daniel.

I saw this comment on the Adelaide United forum.  Interesting perspective.

"Elrich gave us massive troubles, he's got fater than when he played here in Adelaide. When he gets fully fit he's gonna be a real handful, he gave te Nix alot of chances with his crosses an owned his side of the pitch."

What do you want Wolfben? A medal?

Ahmed might still be lacking fitness, he was up to f--k all before the Phoenix. That's where bring in a guy like Costa will play his heart out and can beat a man. He looked sharp against the David guy who played in that american team that came over on Saturday.
Oh Wellington is wonderful. We got the wind, the rain and the phoenix. Oh Wellington is wonderful.

I don't think he can use the fitness excuse anymore. He's lost his pace which was his main weapon and he hasn't adapted. His crossing is simply woeful.

I voted him man of the match last week because I thought he had finally came right - he showed tonight that nothing has changed.

Have to agree. I have been inclined to try and be positive with him, thinking that his class must come through soon and it did look better from him last week.

But those crosses tonight were too hopeful and in some cases hopeless. i think our strikers deserve better

Some people around me in Aisle 25 looked at bit perplexed with me shouting every time he got the ball "run, run, run you donkey! come on, run!...... oh no not again!". That moment when he lost the ball, and then just couldn't be ars*d to even make an attempt at running back to try and get the ball back just summed it all up for me - biggest disappointment of the season for me player-wise. But what a great crowd tonight though, and what a crazy cool rollercoaster ride of emotion it's been at home this season!!

My favourite bit was in the first half where he kicked it ahead of the defender and went to chase it and he didn't have the legs (or lack of puku) to do the job.  Classic.

I let my guitar speak for me
