possibly we've already come close or hit the salary cap and thus have to call him a marquee?

Are Moore, Thompson, Lazaridis, Jardel, Agostino or Vidmar ?

(I will accept I am not 100% certain they are all marquee's but most of them are).

They ARE all marquees, along with Juninho at Sydney.  The Phoenix are currently the only team without one.

Yeah but it generally would be one of the top players in the team.

On Friday night I overheard Ricki say to the bloke from 442 that the last spot was for a marquee player. read what you want into that.

Sign him yes, marquee no.  Save the spot for someone truely deserving when a player ends up out injured long term or leaves.

I think you are thinking about this the wrong way.  Is he the best marquee player ever?  No.  But is he the best available?  I'd say yes.  Remember marquee has to be NZ or Australian, without a club and available to link up with the squad straight away.  This is for this season only, we've already had 4 games so the sooner we sign the better.  Sure he's a risk but compared to what else we can get I think he's a good bet.  I think also that the first games have revealed that we are heavily reliant on Felipe and Daniel for creativity.  I think another attacking player is more important than cover at right back if we are going to make the playoffs which surely must be our aim now.

I think it's unlikely that we would have any room under the cap for Elrich, unless some of our guys are seriously underpaid.  So you're probably right

Yeah we don't have a natural right winger providing he is in good shape he should do well, don't think there are any better options for the marquee available so why not I doubt he would be on big wages anyway.

Edit: to above poster, we've used up all the import spots so the last player has to be from Aus or NZ.

In our case yes, because we already have our four foreign spots filled.

It would allow us to go to a more standard 4-4-2 with plenty of width which gives us increased "possibilities" as Rafa would say...

I might be wrong .. but..

Just because we have not signed a "marquee "player yet, it does not follow that the player we sign to be the last member of this squad will be a marquee player.

Looking at the picture we are getting of Elrich, he does not qualify as my idea of a marquee player, namely a player of above average ability who attracts a top fee and that fee is found outside the salary cap.

However it looks as if he could be very useful as an attacking player and if he is creative and a good finisher, (whats his record there? ) then he's as good an option as any other names being floated around.

What other names?  I don't actually think there are any other realistic options, that's what we have to keep in mind.  Would you rather Elrich or no-one?

Well there were quite a few lines about Raf.

Whoever the boss picks will be good enough for me, he gets it right mainly and knows how he wants to play the game

I'm guessing that we have already hit our salary cap or very close to it so if we want to get another player they HAVE to be a marquee. valeo2007-09-18 22:56:43

could we use the Marquee option to re-sign Felipe on a longer contract with better terms?

Cant see that being the case didnt Rickie say earlier he was keeping a spot till the next transfer window and that he would re evaluate the squad  and see how we were traveling with injuries.I wouldnt consider Elrich a Marquee player.

Hmm that is true. Especially if he keeps this form up over the next few games.

I was of the understanding that to qualify as a marquee player the player in question should have significant international experience and a high profile.  Not sure if Elrich gets anywhere near that.  He's a good player and he'd be a great signing for the Nix if you get him, marquee or not.

I think you have it there Valeo.  I suspect we're going to want more than a couple of starts before making offers like that.  He's been superb, but it's not a proven consistency yet.

In theory, yes.

In practice it gets relaxed by the FFA for the Aussies. FFS if Ante Covic was given marquee status almost anyone can.

tony p was quoted saying in todays dom post that there was gonna be no marquee player
Permalink Permalink

why not
Permalink Permalink
over 18 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
Because the side is competitive without one and there is no need to waste money ?

Because the only non-foreign option is Elrich and he is rumoured to be unfit and has a long history of injury ?

Could be any number of reasons, but these two would convince me pretty quickly.

Think Terry also stated in the same article that a marquee player is still not out of the picture.

Yea i would tend to agree there. It would be good to have a player of his calibre at the club but there is a chance it may disrupt the flow and dynamics of the team so it may not work out for the best. Theres also that concern that he might be a player prone to injury(touch wood), although i think that may be a rather far fetched statment to make, can only wait and see. All matters aside there are very positive signs coming out of the club thus far, what Riki's doing is superb and can only hope things will continue, which im sure they will!

they're professionals, surely a new player isn't gonna disrupt them too much? who is this Elrich, Paul Henry II or something?!
