It would be a good signing. He's a very good player imo. Just not sure how much it would upset the team dynamics.

As long as its not Mark Elrick, Im fine.

He plays more as a right winger, not right back I thought. Anyway the way Christie and Lochead have been playing, I don't think Christie will be overly worried even if Alrich is playing right wing back. They really give us an extra attacking outlet. Alrich would give us another good option though.

Just wondering Valeo, when you  talk about upsetting team dynamics were you thinking about patterns of play, or presonalities, or the whole marquee type thing?? (or something else else entirely)

whys that? dont you rate him?

Looks like a happening thing if the quotes attributed to him in the story are to be believed. He's not going to say anything like"Wellington is a home away from home and I'll be back here every second week. It will keep me away from the distractions of family and friends and I can focus on football." if he's only idly thinking it over...

He's played close to no games in two years at Fulham with injury and generally not being good enough.

He was a good NSL player at Paramatta, but it's not like he's an established international.  It's not like he's going to bring people to the game because of his reputation.

Also, where do we play him ? Who do we drop to fit another attacking player in the side ?  If you are paying Marquee dollars the player has to be in there pretty much every week.

Don't get me wrong, good man to have on board as the 23rd player (if Chris James isn't here ) but I can't see how you would justify making him a marquee.

I'd say Ferrante would be most at risk if Elrich signs

As he's an Aussie, we wouldn't need to invoke marquee status would we? I'm not up to speed with what that means, so I might be over-simplifying. Or is it a case of marquee-designated players not counting towards the salary cap? How does it work?

Yeah, it's the latter.  Five of the other seven clubs have Aussies as their marquee - Moore for the Roar for example and Thompson in Melbourne. The only two foreign marquee players this season are Juninho and Jardel.

Hope they aren't paying Jardel by the pound... he actually looks bigger than the Pasha Bulker.

News, i think it depends

This marquee systems seems really to just be a means of paying for one additional player on top of our salary cap. So, if this is a way we can strengthen the squad then great. Being the marquee players doesnt necessarily mean they get the marquee wages.

So, in short, if we are already at our salary cap limit, and unless Terry is still thinking of forking out for someone genuinely "marquee", I dont have an issue with us using our marquee slot to bring in another decent player.

Elrich doesn't fit the description of a marquee player, but would certainly be a good addition to the squad. Regardless of the attitude of the other players, if you could add another quality player in there surely that is what you would do? Sign him and see what he can do to up the ante on the other players. The A league is a competition with no guarantees, same as being on the roster.

What's sight without sound? Love without peace? Copulation without conception?

I agree with you there. I dont think theres much doubt that hes a good player but it is a MASSIVE RISK bringing him in as a marquee. I try to bring up the Knights as little as i can on this site but two of their better signings (Matt Carbon and Rodriguez) came off serious leg injuries and they managed 4 games between them. I dont think theres much doubt Elrich is a good player but he would have to be 100% over his injuries.
However his pace would be great to have and would spark up the boys a bit

Yeah that's what I was thinking. If we are nearing the salary caplimit and unless we have someone else lined up of marquee quality, I think he'd be well worth bringing in- and as stated my well up the competition for a starting spot, which can only benefit the team.

I just think that Ricki is the type of coach that shows faith in his players. If Elrich came in and took Ferrante or someone elses place (Ferrante played well v Sydney) what would that do to his confidence and the rest of the teams thinking?

I think if Elrich came in, the rest of the players would be delighted.  He works hard, makes chances, and is (from what I've heard) a good lad as well.  He didn't get much game time for Fulham, but just to get a contract with an EPL club takes a lot of ability.

thought id chuck this in the mixer!

Ahmad Elrich will officially join the Wellington Phoenix for the remainder of the current season as a marquee signing. The signing will be announced on Friday provided he passes a medical. Elrich and Wellington Chairman Terry Sereperios, Manager Ricki Herbert and CEO Tony Pignata met last week and a deal was struck.

To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if Lunatic is the kind of bloke who walks around wearing a t-shirt with a picture of himself on it!

I suspected for a while that he was an agent...  Very indescrete isn't he?  Always willing to give out 'inside' gossip.  I'm sure Terry, Ricki and Tony will be delighted that the deal has been announced prior to them talking to the press.  Unless it's just Lunatic trying to get a better offer from the Mariners!

I dont think Elrich's signing would affect Christies chances of first team football. Ricki is a massive fan and because his so versatile he would still get a start I'd say.

Wouldn't his versatility (if Elrich signs) make him an ideal sub rather than a starter

I think he's done well at RB, if ricky shares that view would ferrante's place be more at risk? Though Ferrante did silence a few of the instant critics on Friday.
