Thought he might be gathering Championship interest by now tbh but haven't seen him linked anywhere. Extending him is a no brainer by Hearts, maybe they will look to cash in on him during the next off season.

Tarts fans were very worried about losing him over the summer. I was surprised to see nothing materialised. He’s having a decent season so far.

Tough lessons for Des Buckingham and his Mumbai City side in the Asian Champions League overnight, as they get thwacked 6-0 by Saudi powerhouse Al Hilal in Matchday three of the group stages.

Mumbai go 0-3 in the ACL, with the return fixture against Al Hilal in a couple of weeks time.

They have however started off alright in the Indian Super League which kicked off last month, where they sit 3rd after two wins and a draw to start their campaign.

So Des is not a super coach after all. Mumbai City haven't actually scored a goal in their 3 ACL games to date.
Losing 0-2 (UAE team), 3-0 (Uzbek team) & 6-0 (Al Hilal).

In Buckingham's defence, Mumbai have only played 3 ISL games this season so maybe a bit rusty, but mostly the Indian league is just piss weak.

I’ll never forget his double yellow for the reserves, one of the funniest sending offs I’ve ever seen.

I was curious about his ties to the country so I looked him up. Apparently he was born there, but Botswana doesn't have birthright citizenship.
Google had this to say:
Born in Botswana or outside Botswana and one of your parents is a citizen of Botswana at the time of your birth. You can also be on dual citizenship if you were born by foreign citizens who later acquired Botswana citizenship and registered you as a citizen of Botswana before attaining the age of twenty one (21).

I wonder if one or both of his parents acquired citizenship before or soon after he was born. Apparently he left the country aged 2. But the interesting fact is that he had to be registered as a citizen before age 21...so they must have done that?

Quite an interesting situation and I'm any case, he's still only 26 so plenty of opportunities for International Football.

Des Buckingham off to the top job at Oxford United.

Fantastic move for him that! Back to where it all started out as a player, as well as his first gig managing the Oxford U18's.

Good luck Des. 👏👏

Nope!

But they would have had to pay a pretty penny to get him back to the UK. It wasn't too long ago he was signed to an upgraded deal with Mumbai, which effectively shut the door on a possible return to New Zealand to manage the AW's.

Damn I wish we got him back here - That U20's squad he had was possibly the best crop of players NZ had ever put together - Had them absolutely humming too.

Have no doubt he'll do well over there though.

interesting, given all the chat previously and comments from Des himself about sticking within the City Group's fold to hopefully be considered one day for the EPL job. I wonder if he's decided that getting into the lower leagues is the better pathway.

Oxford currently sitting second in League 1.
If he can pull off a promotion, then being a Championship manager is a pretty damn good gig compared to India.
He's been at City Group long enough now. You've got to have ambition if you want to succeed in the football world. Good on him.

The ISL is a poor standard league. As a barometer Des's Mumbai City are bottom of their AFC Champions League (ACL) group.
Played 4, lost 4. GF 0 GA 13

No one will go from India into the EPL.

He's been at Oxford before, so all makes alot of sense. Real chance to be coaching in the Championship next season. Now he's in a good league in the UK, wonder if any of his ex NZ U20 group will ever come onto his radar. Pijnaker could do worse than make a ph call.

I think of the 2019 U-20 squad, these players could make the step up to League 1 under Des:

- McCowatt
- Pijnaker
- Just
- Bell
- Mata
- Elliot

I’ve excluded Singh, Cacace and Waine because they already play for good clubs.

If Oxford get promoted, I think Bell, McCowatt, Singh and Waine would be good shouts.

McCowatt not good enough to start in the Championship but I think given the right guidance and enough time Bell, Singh and Waineo could do it.

Just has the technical ability but not the physical attributes.

Singh would be better off playing 90 minutes in a team that appreciates him, than hardly playing off the bench imo. Otherwise he risks becoming Marco.
Having a good season in League One and getting promoted would probably be ideal for him tbh.

Roy Krishna still scoring goals for Fiji as they dismantle the Northern Mariana Islands 10-0 to open their Pacific Games campaign in Honiara.

Biggest win for Fiji against a team from outside the OFC since they thwacked Guam 12-0 back in 1993.

If he takes the field on Tuesday against Tahiti, it will bring up 50 national team caps across a 16 year international career.

Fiji + Phoenix + OFC legend. 👏
