I'm giving you my take on the match against Perth.
For me given a pretty balanced passing accuracy within the whole team, importance for defenders and midfielders goes to winning the ball. So:
Including All Duels (offensive/Defensive/Aerial/Interceptions/clearances). I included clearances to be fair on Wootton (he makes a lot of clearances):

Pennington/Wootton 20  (Pennington 10 interceptions)
Kelly Heald                 18
Payne                          17
Surman                        16
Rufer                            13
Kraev                            11
Al Taay                         10
Kosta/Zawada               9
Old                                 4 (1 interception)
Others                            0

I understand that some players were subbed and Old was a sub.
Pennington ran the most 13.2 km
Everyone else who played the full match ran 9-11km

I attach importance to the distance ran by midfielders because it gives a good indication of tracking back. A particular weak area in the 4 years that I've watched the Nix.

I took the Stats from Wyscout.

Anyway we'll get another 3 points next Saturday. No Problem.

Brisbane roar are a far greater test. We won't have oli gifting us a goal

Talking about Chiefy rating himself as a tactician. I think that's fair. In 4 years of watching the Nix, I don't think that I've ever seen us set up so well tactically.
I feel that Chiefy knows his own players better than previous coaches, he clearly pays attention to match analysis and statistics which I don't think you could say that of previous coaches.
Finally he creates a "you'll never walk alone" environment. Again, not seen in the last 4 years anyway.

I agree that Kelly-Heald is going to be a great NZ international. Currently however he's on a steep learning curve with the tactical side.

My take:
Obviously Zawada + Kraev were Serie A with their finishes (a class above).

Barbarouses outstanding professional.

Rufer and Pennington won the ball 45 times between each other. Rufer 28...Amazing Performance. Pennington gives the opposition something to think about going forward but tracks back 100%.

Al-Taay good. Has to be subbed to bring on the talented Old. Sorry for that but needs must.

Payne like Kosta. Amazing professional, great goal. Move started by Pennington, and then he blocked the goalkeepers view of the shot(what do you want? it's my take).

The defence and it's organisation were excellent.

Kelly-Heald... excellent, wonderful assist. Fair share of winning the ball for the team as well.

Feels like Chief is building a system around the players rather than forcing players to fit within a system.

More players playing in their preferred positions and doing a better job than in previous seasons.

Quick question, I listened to the podcast few weeks back with Domey. Does anyone know what that 5 year plan was regarding stadiums? He said something was at least 5 years away. But not sure what he was meaning? Loving the podcast btw.

I don’t actually know what the plan is but imagine if the Nix and Wellington Rugby partnered up alongside some investors and built something like these stadiums on field number 1 at NZCIS.

This is the HJK stadium Bolt Arena in Helsinki - 10k capacity with one double tiered stand (could tarp off the top for smaller games).

And this is the smaller SJK stadium in Finland - 6000 capacity.

A pipe dream of course, but it really would be incredible. If the Nix had part ownership they could make a good return on concerts etc too.

The dream mate! Still don’t know why they don’t just upgrade Sky Stadium. Move seat forward, and cover empty seats with covers with sponsors on it. Be better than yellow seats and cheaper than other options

There is a statement in this pod directed at Kungfu Panda, I'm paraphrasing here but "Some people say he (Nick Pennington) is great at winning the ball and show all his stats, but he often gives away the ball in the first instance so it is a net zero!". I laughed at that.

Cheers guys, was a good listen!

I wasn't going to reply to that because I thought that their understanding of what Pennington offers the team was moving in the right direction. Nothing changes over night.

We need a good win in Melbourne now. Good luck to the boys.

Although the stats analysis can get a bit tiresome, I've come to enjoy some of your contrarian comments KP on Pennington. And you having lived in Italy for so long, maybe it's like you are offering a different Euro type lens on the game.

I'd say as a rule, folks have bit more appreciation now on what Pennington offers. Where ever he goes after the Nix, he should take you along, as Supporter Numero Uno!

My opinion.
We go into the International break 3rd in the league. We should be top. We were denied Victory against Victory by appalling refereeing.

Like it or not, Pennington is a key player. As I think we've noticed before (I'm thinking of Macarthur in the cup, 2022), when Pennington gets a yellow card he completely stops playing. Therefore we effectively lost him from 7 minutes. We may as well have subbed him then.
The most unjustified card that I've seen in the A-League.

Nonetheless Pennington went on to win us a Penalty which the referee and VAR assistance spent 4 minutes working out how to get out of giving.

But for some good goalkeeping we'd have beaten WSW as well so it wouldn't be unreasonable for us to be on 12 points now and be 4 points clear at the top.

My view on Sutton over Kelly-Heald for left back. Right now I'd leave Kelly-Heald. He's rapidly working out the A-League. He wins his Duels, he's an excellent defender and provides a threat going forward. Sutton is the attacking option, he's fast and a serious threat in attack but offers much less in defence.

Old for Pennington or Al-Taay. For me this is a no-brainer. Old is a superb impact player. We're doing really well. Why would we change. It would throw a spanner in the works of the amazing defensive tactics that the boys have clearly worked hard on preseason.

I know that we can be boring but we were exciting against Brisbane. Why should we entertain a Melbourne or Sydney crowd? They can sing for entertainment.

Interesting chat that very few Auckland football people know the Nix are at Mt Smart this weekend. I think you will see a whole different scale of A League promotion in NZ come next season with billionaire Foley's enterprise. The team is going to be very heavily promoted around the 09.

It's going to be one very significant difference in having a super rich American owner, verus Welnix. And that's not a criticism of Welnix who the Nix have been very fortunate to have. It's just the way it will be. You can't salary cap the marketing spend.

And Elena, Auckland definitely has big areas to it that are rugby league through & through. I suspect you haven't driven around Mangere/Otahuhu/Otara/Papa2toes in awhile. It's a world away from the Shore.

Matters buggar all how much they spend on marketing its getting punters through the gate thats the important thing and see nothing to suggest the 09 is going to change when it comes to going to sport. Love your optimism its going to be interesting.

You have obviously never run a business or major event, if you think marketing makes no difference to sales or crowds. There are many reasons as why the WWC was such a huge success, but a major factor was FIFA have cash reserves of over $USD3.9 Billion! (yes you read that right), and they can spend up massively on advertising.

Foley Corp is a mini version of that. The good folk of Auckland come October next year, are going to be very very aware that a new football club is about to kick off. There is going to be some serious American influenced razzamatazz going on.

Contrast that to the constant laments on here of the Phoenix and NZF, spending very little on publicity for A League or AWs/Ferns games. How many signs are around the 09 this week, promoting tomorrow's games at Mt Smart?

Some folk here are too hung up on what happened 17 seasons ago with the Knights. It's really of little relevance to an American billionaire setting up a team in 2024. The Knights had visa players Simon Yeo, Frank van Eijs, Naoki Imaya, Sean Devine, Neil Emblen, Xiaobin Zhang, Ben Collett, Ronnie Bull & our good mate Bazeley. A sad sack of journeyman no names really. Foley has promised high profile exciting marquee players, and he'll deliver on that.

The Knights also played at NHS (it's negatives debated to death).
Then the popn of Auckland in 2007 was 1.39M. The current popn is 1.74M. So popn growth of about 350,000. Basically take Welly City and the Hutt combined and plonk it down in Auckland 17 years later.

Elena on the pod lives in Auckland. She knows the football scene there, and says the community is dying to have a team to support. Folk on average in the 09 (especially younger people & the immigrants that have come in) are far more aware of football now than back in the days of the miserable Knights. This week's announcement is a big boom for NZ football overall, and even the most one eyed Nix fans should be happy about it.

I think its not worth underestimating that all the sports media is based in auckland now especially as the team is announced, gets big signings and is winning there will be a decent media push on this that the nix have struggled with having no media in wellington

From a Nix point, I'm jealous of the potential for this team. The media hype and coverage that this Auckland franchise is likelyto get will be everything we wanted all those years ago (and feel we deserve now). Foley knows how to make a noise and gets bums on seats and results. If he can manage to get an ice hockey team up a running in Vegas and amke it successful, then he can propbably get a football team in Auckland without too much stress.
The massive advantage Foley has is his billions, he can spend millions more than Welnix ever could and not really notice the dent on the bottom line.

Football is also still a bit girly and wussy in image. Or middle class and white and liberal, perhaps.
An American billionaire owner who didn’t mind Trump and also owns a hockey team and drinks wine in Jervois Road gives permission for both ‘tougher’ and richer Orcs to go too. Perhaps.
