Great to see the FeverZone gradually expanding. One concern is the amount of families and first time time supporters seeing the Zone as being "fashionable" and not actually contributing to the noise and passion we stand for. I'm not saying they are all like this, I encountered many people travelling with football clubs, supporter groups and schools from around the country enjoying the game and singing their hearts out. Hopefully it is just a matter of time before all supporters, local and abroad, learn the words to chants and familiarise with the culture of Yellow Fever to make us the envy of supporter groups around the A League (not that we aren't already ).

we were sh*t when we were 2-1 down.  A few people tried to start chants and no one joined in.  It is easy sing when you are winning..........

To everyone singing and dancing in the concorse after the game - where were you when we were down??

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

Completely agree Frankie. Like I said, hopefully given time, supporters will learn.

That silence after their second was unreal. Then that bit where we were "regrouping" I really hated that quiet. Mate Bill got up and started singing "sing when you're winning" (aisle 27) and a few people took the hint.
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

The Fever Zone really needs to sort its sh*t out when the Phoenix go behind. Against Newcastle and again last night it was like a funeral. That's when we really need to lift the roof off.

the guys in the concorse need to calm down because they were cheering after a draw! i'm all for supporting our great team, but it was a draw guys! if we win, then by all means go crazy, but a draw?!...gimme a break.

If people want to cheer and shout after the f#@king game let them.  The more excitement and atmosphere created, regardless of the result, keeps the vibe going.  After all, we could have lost 2-1.  I vote for more cheering and shouting on the concorse, after and before each and every game! Lets celebrate, Wellington has got a professional football team, WOOHOO!

i dont have a voice today due to the amount of chanting i done when we were down 2-1 we need to pick it up lads, dont slip, keep it going for all 90 mins
Permalink Permalink

agreed! - chanting for the full 90 mins is a must. And as other people have pointed out a bit more unity in the chants - It seemed as though we were trying to chant over each other all the time. Or the front half and that back half would be a couple of beats out of time.

your right, we need to get a group of ring leaders from each bit to get together and sort this out so we sound more of a force, we were great last night, but we can be better!!

I agree, its great to be part of a crowd with a culture of passion, but it would be nice if we could include comradeship and inclusion in the culture too. I believe that inspiring other fans with our own fervour is more productive than moaning about them (am I moaning too? er..). As in life, some people are more vocal than others. But of course we should celebrate a draw. We should celebrate being the Phoenix, win draw or the other one.

We were doing the 'Come on Phoenix' and 'Sing your hearts out for the boys' as soon as Adelaide scored their second. That sounded pretty loud to me, but then again the 3-4 rows in the heart of the YF zone where we were are generally the loudest anyway, so maybe these chants weren't taken up with as much fervour (if at all) in the other parts of the ground.
Will watch and listen to the replay to check it out.

The depressing thing is that those of us listening to the game on the radio could hear the chants in the background when they were going and could hear it go quiet. It was f*cking scary -- I was wondering how bad things were that everyone went so silent! Please don't let it happen again guys! If it's affecting the morale of fans listening to the game, imagine what it's doing to the players!

I think some people on this forum are a little hard on the fans.  I've seen a lot of football around the world and up and down the EPL.  I don't know many sets of fans that would be giving it out large when their team has just let two goals in.  Get real - it's all about emotions and it's usually something that happens ON the pitch that sparks them off again.  Not some slightly deranged lunatic with a megaphone at the front, or as in the case of what I had to put up with last night, a prat with a whistle and a fog horn who banged on all night but couldn't even get the rhythm right (those who sat in aisle 23 will know who I'm talking about!).

Fan culture takes time to build as well.  You can't manufacture it any more than you can manufacture atmosphere.  It has to come from the heart.  That's way too deep now.

Not enough people joined in the 'Ricki Herberts Yellow Army' chant. It's a good'n. It went for about 10 minutes in Sydney

A lot of new faces at the packed Backbencher too made for chants at the pub hard to start. Good to see fresh Feverites though

This is exactly right. No need to get your coat. Like the team the fever also need time to grow. It is a great start for both. Well done to those at the games. Keep it up.

At last someone who talks some sense some of you seem to think that things will be perfect right from the start.Just like the team its a new thing for all us and i can see things only getting better. Also wasnt quiet after their 2nd goal where i was standing.

Would be interested to hear from some of the Bloc 5 guys on how long it took them to get into full swing.

i think what needs to happen is if the boys at the front start a chant a couple of you need to turn around so people up the back can see what your singing  then the middle  section will pass it on and then we'll all be one voice in time  it'll take sometime to get sorted
also loving that big phoenix shirt we passed up to that was awesome

Enough with the apologies! Yellow Fever doesn't need time to grow - it's already proven how awesome it can be. Let's just hear more of it, more often and especially when the team's behind!

And stop worrying about the chants being perfect and in sync. It sounds great already and volume is the main thing. "Ricki Herbert's yellow army" sounds better when it is kind of sloppy and staggered anyway - it's like a wall of sound moving around the ground.

Perth won't know what's hit them...

i really dislike the families in the zone, also allocated seating in the zone annoys me.

i think the silence made a statement, it was the only time on TV people could hear us.

we need chant leaders, i have said it from day one.

YF will be a sucsess when we drown out the TV commentators, untill then we need work

90% of what you post is absolute bollocks WARZ... we'll happily ignore this like everything else you post.

Allocated seating is here live with it, and if you can't be arsed showing others fans respect in the zone, f**k off somewhere else.

Me too.  "Chant leaders"?  It's a football match not a scout camp.  If you think we need more chanting, just start some yourself.  It's easy!

I have a season ticket with my family in asile 22 - they stand up and chant for the full 90

Allocated seating isn't that big a deal - there is always a few spare seats dotted throughout the zone. Just move along or up or down if your in someones seat and they ask you to move. Other wise ignore it.

We Don't need chant leaders just more unison if you hear a chant don't try and chant over it make it bigger keep it going. Then when it dies down start your own. That way we have chants and songs the whole 90 minutes and there aren't any lulls.

Hmm i had a thought to get a chant to spread straight away. Because what  happens often iis someone tries to start one on their own, so sings the first line...then by the time most people hear it enough to join in, the guys already halfway through it..so it is out of time, and not so loud either.

Im thinking maybe if someone shouted out the name of the chant, or like the first line, before it is started, then thatll give people time to join in etc

Does that make sense? It does to me, but i dont think i explained it too well

Allegedly

We ain't drowning out anyone with 12,000 in the ground.  35,000 maybe but not 12,000.  As my post earlier today pointed out, these things take time to evolve.

The YF zone is going well. Remember that we're only a few weeks old. These things take time to organically emerge. Personally I'm amazed and impressed with how much has been achieved so soon in our history. It bodes well for the seasons ahead.

You can't drown out the TV commentators. The television broadcasts adjust the sound mix to ensure the commentary can be heard. Sometimes they do it so much you can't hear much from the game itself at all. The US coverage of games relayed through ESPN is often very poor for this.

I'm interested in that families in the zone statement... you need to qualify that. What is your entry criteria for the zone then?

i think the following are the key issues we have:

1) people don't join in - common issues with football fans all over the world, so not much you can do about it.  It is just frustrating to talk to people in the pub before the game who go on about how awsome the fever zone is, and then see them standing there during the game and not joining in.

2) too many groups of people only want to do their own chants - there are different pockets of people starting chants, so sometimes there are 3 or 4 chants at the same time.  Instead of trying to compete with each other, sometimes you have to bite the bullet and realise that one of the other chants is building bigger momentum, so it is better if you join that.  I noticed the group of young lads at the front would only stick to their own chants, even if the rest of the zone had joined into another one.

3) repetitive chants from the top - it is easier to chants going from the back, as it is easier for people below to hear and join in, but there only seems to be a couple of chants that start there - phoenix clap clap clap, and same old aussies....  It would be a lot better if we got some different chants going from there that everyone would pick up on.

4) people going mute when we are losing - mentioned elsewhere, but it is easy to sing when you are winning.  We need to make sure that when we are losing, or something goes wrong, the crowd noise goes up to show how much we are behind the lads.

Those are my thoughts.

Also, being in a cricket stadium doesn't help much. I'd much rather we were in a proper shaped ground with a proper roofed end in which to echo the accoustics.

Yep me too. My wife and teenage daughter knew what the zone was going to be about when we signed up and they're as vocal and loud as anyone with the chants - the one exception being my daughter popping off to see some friends for a bit in yesterday's match.

If some of our young lads feel intimidated by being out chanted by families like me, a woman in her 40s and a 14 year old girl, that's their problem not ours!
