No, he's back, he just couldn't travel to Adelaide as they have different border restrictions to nsw and Vic. The team were apparently surprised that South Australia wouldn't let him cross the border.
Payne is sounding more and more like a leader. He might well have been named leader if he hadn't had the infamous golfcart outing!
Would that have played much of a factor, it was a one-off sorta thing, and it seems counter-productive to have named Rufer captain. Also, Payne was joined by Sail on that night, yet Sail still got the vice-captaincy, so I’m not sure that occasion was high on Talay’s considerations.
Could having the Captaincy be distracting Rufer from playing well??
No. Someone posted stats that Rufer is actually a good midfielder. But he got dragged halftime when he was literally on notice from the coach. I guess the coach did not trust him to bring more forward energy into the game and also don’t think his leadership is needed to turn a game at halftime. I won’t blame the bad performances on Rufer, all of the team played bad. In dire times many people think a fearless superhuman leader can turn a game, but I don’t think that is how it works. We also we have to talk about Uffi, he promised us that we won’t play that bad again, and it may was not as shark as the Jets game, but is was very close. Easiest is to blamed the covid situation, but the team need to turn it around. I hope they can it it to some degree, Hooper is back and new players are also coming into the mix.
I believe players need to stand down for 7 days after a positive covid test. So I don't think Piscopo will play. Hopper should be good to go. Might not get a full 90 min though after his time away from the training field. I really hope we don't see Lewis and Rufer start together in midfield again. Can't keeping doing the same thing and expect different results.

Actually, I have no problem with Uffi. What people do not seem to accept is that we lost a core of experienced seasoned players from one season to the next. Of all of these, perhaps only Marinovic departure we can live with. No disrespect, but it is naive to expect that our current lineup is able to compete at this level, without Devlin, Hemed, Davila and Taylor. COVID is a factor but only an indirect cause for our maladies. COVID costs the club a lot of money, and that money could have been spent on holding on to our excellent imports (Hemed, Davila) or to bring new ones in to replace the likes of Taylor in a timely fashion. I agree with others that the club would not be fielding a Womens side if they had significant money issues. However, spending a season in Australia (again) is expensive and a pragmatic approach is at play: play with what we have, get some players on loan, and accept that this a write-off season. Most, if not all, A-League clubs have them. Two years ago we finished third, so I know Uffie is a capable coach, but he is fielding a shadow of a competent team this year.
The team tried to hold onto He'd and Davilla, the issue with recruitment was about MIQ not money.Hooperr is an upgrade on Hemed, so our loss is Davilla and Taylor.

Yeah but the cash bleeding of being based in NSW is only one Covid related issue.
No Covid Taylor stays. No Covid easier to sign/attract visa players. No Covid Nix get big lift from playing half their games in front of their home supporters. No Covid and players with families like Ball & Hooper have some off field stability with their kids in Welly schools etc etc. No Covid and players sleep in their own beds, with welcome time away from each other and football in general - that's harder based in Sydney with all the uncertainty of what is happening week to week.
Look at the Breakers. They'll struggling also. Dead last 6 losses from 6.

I would count loss of Devlin here as well.
I would almost say Devlin has been our biggest loss. Really missing that energy and tenacity in midfield and none of the current guys seem to be able to replicate that atm.
Ufuk Talay said today the two Wellington Phoenix players that tested positive for Covid-19 aren’t back training yet. One had returned another positive test.
The Nix will miss two of their own as they recover from coronavirus, with Talay saying the club may have avoided greater spread given players weren't able to spend time with family over Christmas.
"The players are trying to be smart in the decisions they make," he said.
"Hopefully not clubbing. Our players are pretty young ... half of them wouldn't get into nightclubs anyway."
So will this game get the go ahead? Or is Kisnorbo possibly referring to his players having 'had covid' at some stage, rather than those who currently have it? Can't see how it will go ahead if it's the latter...
If it is on, surely we'd have to fancy our chances against a City yoof team.

Having put money on TAB this season on us beating the Jets, WSW, Sydney FC and Adelaide, I decided not to do it for this game just on the off chance this would help us.

If Hopper is indeed good to go, I hope it is the Easy Rider version and not the Blue Velvet version. DH1.jpg22.7 KB
i can't wait for the game! it's a chance to put things right.
pre-season (by all accounts) and in the first two games we were a tidy outfit, capable of taking points off any team. fingers crossed for a return to this tonight!

Thank you for your services. Condolences to your wallet too. 😂
Three Wellington Phoenix players have returned inconsistent rapid antigen tests for COVID-19 and aren’t being considered for tonight’s FFA Cup quarter-final against Melbourne City in Melbourne.
