How about that ref, sharke. I'm sure he'll be in charge of a game in Welli sometime this season though.
Based on this why was Rufer on the outer so much?
Was wondering the same thing! Encouraged and hopeful for the young Kiwis this year
It's been covered on the forum before but from what I understand, it was mainly his attitude. He was told to pull his head in but he didn't. New managment fresh start?
Given the makeshiftness of the side, that was mostly encouraging.
Fuck this stupid game
Seriously this is a cup tournament that hasn't really caught the imagination of the footballing public,as I said before a good physical run out for a bunch of mainly young players,no harm in it all but largely irrelevant in the bigger scheme of things, onwards and upwards!
We play at a stadium that has the best playing surface in the league(despite its other obvious shortfalls) we have a superb training facility up at Lavaud street in Berhampore and a youthful team with a lot of promise,if Morrison and the Wellnix hold their nerve and allow some funds for a decent striker then I think we could be the surprise package this year!
Methinks it's time to find that sock with the season ticket money in it!

Nix have no silverware, FFA Cup would be nice amongst other things. BTW the crowds that turn out in Australia for some of the small NSL team are good for such a young competition. Maybe next year we can make it to the last 16 or further.

Last chance saloon this season. So much promise, not enough delivery.
Edit: that clumsy volley hit wide from superb Marowa layoff kinda sums up where he's at and where he's been at for too long IMO.

At least the goal was not a Ruff decision on a dubious foul call!

Didn't manage to catch the game, but a few questions:
- what sort of shape did we line up in? Was there any obvious changes in style or tactics from last season?
- how did Rogerson go up front?
- Why are we trialling Wood at CB if we already have 4 CBs, plus Doyle who can cover there?
- how did WSW look? Can we read much into this game?

did anyone else think that roly was carrying a bit more junk in his trunk that last year?
Questions: Wgtn drawn first in live draw. Home games in Australia. Nix decided stadium, I believe. Nix in away strip or was that the FFA Cup strip? Did WSW organise every thing to be listed WSW v WEL and wear home strip? Or did FFA hijack game, as commentators constantly take about "what WE need to do" and What We need to WIN" when talking of wanders.
Any way the team wanders put out needs a lot of work.

- Looked to be 4-2-1-3 which transitions into more of a 4-4-2 in defense.
- Didn't see a lot of action. Was playing centrally so really just filling in in the shape before we sign a central striker. Taken off in the second half for Marowa (who doesn't seem to be up to much)
- The other CBs didn't travel so guessing they are injured. Doubt it's a trial. More likely it was done for necessity.
- Given they have been in training longer, and have more games under their belt, they were pretty rusty. Not too many chances. Think Mumbo made two saves.

Attacking players all generally struggled to get into the game. The young guy Wood looked really strong I thought. Paricki looked like and upgrade on Lia, thought we noticeably tried to play out from the back more. Italiano looked better than Moss with the ball at his feet. Rufer looked like he could do something this year on that showing.

Was probably fudged by Rossi injury in warm-up but seemed to me 4-1-1-1-3 with paracki-rufer-weemac in mid transitioning doing OK but bugger-all happening upfront. Decent defence, Wood not half bad for 1st up, Paraki I'm not sure about, some good intercepts but also a few dodgy sprayed passes. Rufer an enigma, couple great thru balls, couple tanties, one crap shot, WeeMac hardworking getting things moving but no final product coz Krishna was lacking quality support upfront. WSW not so hot either. We looked better in possession IMO, but without threat.

We had a lot of possession in our own half. Wee Mac drifts in and out of games, probably my major criticism of him. When he's good he is really good though
Normo's coming home
I was really happy with this. Not a lot going forward - Singh is better central and Rogerson is better wide but it was a makeshift team and that happens.
Italiano did a good job. Distribution was strong, has a foot like an absolute cannon. I remember one corner he came for and didn't get to but no issues apart from that.
Doyle and Wood put their hand up to compete for minutes with Fox and Lowry as backup CB, although Doyle probably still starts at LB. Thought Parkhouse was the most defensively sound I've seen him. Galloway did everything right, looks like a solid replacement for Tratt.
If Paracki maintains that standard all season I'll be very happy, broke up play well, looked strong on the ball and some great distribution. Expecting him to kick on and improve as he settles in as well. Rufer showed both his ability and his attitude. Certainly an A-League standard player but he rubbed WSW the wrong way and got the shark kicked out of him. He seems to rub a lot of people the wrong way. McGlinchey solid, not outstanding. Will be a key piece for us.
Singh was quite clearly out of position, and didn't have the space he's used to in Central League, he has the quality to adapt though. Krishna's touch was silky, should've had a couple of goals. Rogerson was lacklustre. Marowa well, well out of his depth, was 5 yards behind everything, although did show flashes of quality.
Overall a solid outing, a good defensive performance with the 5th and 6th choice CB's and WSW should be embarrassed they left it til the 122nd minute. Ref should be embarrassed as well but that's a different story.
Valley FC til I die?
Cheers guys

Yeah I wanted to say something nice about him for once though! He did look good going forward, and he was forced to LB by Rossi's injury. He'll be a fine squad option as a winger but if he gets any extended minutes at LB we'll be in trouble.

Italiano played out quite well, much better than Moss in this regard. Allowed our CBs to play wider and the full backs pushed up quite high, quite often a CM would use the space created by the full backs going forward to receive the ball in wider areas (something Roar did when Rado was there). For all the $$$ WSW had on the field and the extra time in camp, they weren't great. Apart from Krishna we missed a little x factor (pace, skill, size, flair etc.) in the attacking third but getting to that attacking third we did ok.
agree with this

Overall I think we should all be happy.
We played a team that has been together longer, on paper is far superior and played against them with a bunch of kids and competed! Some of the youngsters really looked solid out there today, especially Wood which is encouraging and Rufer certainly looked liked he belonged. He easily won the most free kicks despite playing a more defensive role which shows he was getting to the ball first in broken play and using his body effectively.
We lacked spark, but given the players missing, the focus of the coach as stated and the room to bring 1 or 2 in I'm happy. I hate losing, but I am happy.
Had a birthday dinner to attend (very enjoyable!) last night, so missed the game. Thanks for the posts.
Sounds like
- the team is going to be well drilled,
- we still need a quality striker (surprise!),
- Rufer is capable but up himself,
- both Paracki and Galloway are very solid - or better - acquisitions
- we showed signs of better organisation behind advanced fullbacks
- Singh will need to lift to make an impression under A League pressure, but consensus seems to be he can probably handle it.
My thoughts on the back of that:
- fitting Finkler into that lineup probably means a 1-2 up front, with something like Paracki, Rufer and McG doing the engine room.
- if Rufer could sort his shark he could be a big deal for the balance of this squad. Fingers crossed.
- that's a "well done" to the coaching team for the first significant hit out. Yes?
Good organisation. Initial focus on discipline and organisation for a sound base. Good recruitment.
Keep calm, carry on. Potential for better things. Getting fan boy warmed up for this season. Makes a change.

Finkler is going to be a very important player for us. I'm still waiting for one of the young guys to really make their mark too, would be so exciting to have another home grown talent in the team.

Bit of talk that a #9 is incoming. So expect us to play with a front 3 with Finker back as a 10, rather than a false 9 under Ernie.

I feel like our season really relies on how good the #9 is - obviously signing foreign players is a bit of a crapshoot, so lets hope we're lucky this time.

His defensive frailties are obvious, but he's got a great cross on him, easily the best in the team (from the left at least).

Anyone else annoyed by the poor quality camera?
Better coverage than a lot of overseas All Whites games. The Myanmar match in particular springs to mind
Decent performance by a very young team and showed excellent structure despite the lack of experience.
3 points Alex Rufer. Very good central midfield performance. Excellent technician.
2 points Scott Galloway. Decent right back. Solid defensively. Composed and gets forward.
1 point Liam Wood. Super debut (looked after by Doyle) Minimal errors. Neat distribution.
Wellnix its time to buy some players and show you love the Club.
Personally think he didn't have many overly difficult saves tbf. He also made a few fumbles so I'm not overly impressed.
Distribution was certainly better than Moss though.

I thought that was a notable improvement. I liked Moss but he was first and foremost a great shotstopper
