Is there even any point in us turning up given how diminished our squad is?

Gives Glory a chance to scout some more of our players?

Email to members today, not sure if it’s based on previous or next season membership:

Winter may be here, but the action’s heating up at Fraser Park. Rally your mates and whānau for a mid-winter Nix fix on Sunday 27 July. Get ready for an evening of football, club insights, and great kai in the heart of the Phoenix Academy.

We’re kicking off the evening with our
U18 Girls taking on Wellington United Diamonds at 4pm. Straight after, stick around for a live Q&A session, with GM David Dome on the ground at Fraser Park, and Director of Football Shaun Gill joining us live from Australia. It’s your chance to hear what’s coming up for the club and ask the questions that matter to you. Then at 7pm, it’s time to back your Phoenix Men as they face Perth Glory in Round One of the Australia Cup, live on the big screen.

FREE entry – RSVP essential.

Pre-order food and
save $2 compared to buying on the day, otherwise, drinks & food available for purchase on the day.

Location: Fraser Park, Taitā.

Date: Sunday 27 July from 4pm

(Off topic for this thread but would be a good date for any announcements.)

So sounds like there is a chance that Retre will come in for this one, but not much chance we will see Rufer or Payne or Piper. What about Walker who was nowhere to be seen last night?

Judging by last nights performance, I think we can cover them. It would be a better test for the reserves. After all a decent cup run would help with fitness, tactics and getting to really know each other. I saw potential, whether the players continue to live up to it, then we might be in a very good position for a few years,if they all stay here to develop.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

I don't think Walker has played since taking a heavy tackle against the Roar in Darwin. Missed the U20s tour of Chile.

Based on last night he will now be under some pressure to play well in pre season, with plenty of other Academy kids looking to make the first team. Out of say the other youngsters LBS, GSR and Supyk - can see his squad spot as most at risk. Didn't do much last season and not sure he has the talent of the others.

Just want to temper expectations of the young players, almost getting the impression from some that the club swap out the first team for them. They are currently third in the central league, some way off Olympic and I don't think we would expect Olympic to be more competitive in the AL than the Nix first team.

Playing 20 v 10 at the end of a long preseason friendly tour is different to any kind of competitive game.

There’s a rule against transfers based solely on tournaments, let alone one off friendlies. However, if the resume had been building, it certainly doesn’t hurt.

Can Walker sue the guy?

Iirc it was a sulky late pay-back tackle, that didn’t even get a red. You make fun of me for getting angry at refs and inconsistent cards- this is why. The inconsistent cards encourage bad challenges and this has substantially impacted on Walker’s season. Hopefully no more than that.

I do not think he can sue the offender directly but arguably he could probably consider legal action against Football Australia (as game organisers). This would be under the Australian, not New Zealand law.   This is just my speculation, someone more lawyerish may want to comment.

Hopefully Walker not far away from a return.

Rufer got sent off in that Roar Cup tie (2 yellows), so presumably babies & injuries aside he would be unavailable regardless for Perth.

Italiano was forced to make an early substitution in the 36th minute after Walker was injured following a bad foul from Roar centre back Hosine Bility. Bility was lucky to escape with just a yellow card and there was no Video Assistant Referee to bring the challenge to the referee’s attention as there’s no VAR in the Australia Cup.

My understanding is Walker has suffered a fresh muscle injury since returning from the the Australia Cup leg fracture.

I was really hoping we were beyond the whole 'convert-a-winger-to-a-fullback' thing, but ah well

With Payno it was convert a FB to a winger! That one went okay…

Considering he started out as an AM and slowly worked backwards.

Was a second striker/attacking midfielder when he went to Rovers iirc. Filling in at DM during the Olympics started his slow move backwards.

Think his wiki calls him a utility. Hasn’t played keeper?

I think only Fenton under Merrick had a similar fate.

Fenton went from left wing to right back. He was an outstanding attacking wide player. I remember thinking at the time that this might not be in the players best interests. Looking back, I can't really say whether it was a success or a failure.

I've read two articles that say kick-off is at 9pm NZT, and two that say 7 pm. Hmmm

Tomorrow we will learn a lot more about the team.. winning a pre season match vs a team also trying different things is well and good, but the cup is a serious opportunity to finally win a trophy (if MacArthur can twice so can we).. I hope they take it seriously and not just a pre season run around

Having to travel all the way to Perth is tough though. Looks like Glory will be a stronger team this season.

No luck with the draw when you look at all the NPL teams the Nix could have come up against. Didn't MAC win the Cup one season, not playing an ALM club until the final or something?

I look at who Auckland already had run out against WCR in their friendly - almost a full strength team from last season - and can see them having a deep Cup run unfortunately.

I wouldn't get too despondent if the Nix lose tomorrow. Still lots of potential growth over the next few pre season months. Eze to come in plus hopefully a visa AM. With luck the big U20 WC cohort returning from Chile better players.

Last season they lost quite a poor South Melbourne team while playing academy players, Rojas and Kosta.. this Perth side is in a very early stage of their rebuild, and from memory nix haven’t lost in Perth in 5 years?? So no excuses tomorrow, gotta go in with the right mindset as this is a very winnable game

South Melbourne made the final four last year, only losing their semi 0-1  to Macarthur. They can't have been that poor.

They did yes play NPL teams in R16 & QFs following their win over the Nix.

They beat NPL 2 side Olympic fc and then Hume who are a decent in npl vic in quarter final, I think they fired their coach shortly after for poor performances in the NPL season, they’re still one of the weaker npl vic sides.. anyway, I think winning tomorrow will help the team confidence and give us more of a proper pre season, it certainly is better then playing wairarapa United, island bay or Kapiti united

Not sure whos available for Perth but they've stacked their defence this season but seem short of quality in attack other than Taggart so I think this game will be tight 1-0 either way.

Pleased to see Cassidy making the trip.

First time I had seen him verses Wrexham and based upon the eye test, I’m going to call it now - if he stays fit,  he will be in the starting line up this season and have the best career of any player in the squad.

Auckland will rise once more

I thought Flowerdew might have been worth taking over. Thought he got himself in good spots and we don't have many striking options.

Cassidy has some work to do on the mental side, if the stupid red card he got vs Miramar Rangers is anything to go by. Kicking out at a player keeping the ball in the corner doesn't scream "pro mentality'.

Definitely - but would certainly make me pause before promoting him to the first team given the maturity needed.

We haven't seen that behavior out of any of the other teenagers we've been playing, so can't be just a teenager thing.
