I think a top 6 could be restructured in a similar way to the NRL.

I've been thinking:
1 v 6        2 v 5           3 v 4

Then the 3 Winners would go into a semi final with the 4th team being the highest ranked loser. Therefore you are rewarded for finishing higher in the regular season.

What would be the incentive for the 1st placed team not to put out their reserves? If they lose they will always be the highest placed loser and go to the semis anyway.

Theoretically, a home semi. However it is a solution without a problem. If you want to change the playoffs because you don't like a top 6 then fine, but if we are to keep top 6, I think the current system is superior to anything else.

edit: @ Tip-Dadi - the incentive for coming first is that you win the Premiership, which (to me at least) is more meaningful than the finals series Championship.
Agreed - there is always an incentive to finish top of the table at the regular season.  But the A-league champions are the team that wins the playoff series.  I just think that when viewing the the current playoff structure in isolation, there is no disadvantage to the team finishing 2nd rather than 1st. (I see Brisbane are in the box seat now to host the final.)

So to clarify, the date of the Phoenix's game next weekend is not set yet? Depends on where it's being played? Will have to have the Air NZ website ready on a hair trigger....

Good to know, could get a decent crowd at that time.
Did it come from FFA?

The easiest solution for the whole thing of course is just to have the top 4 play a semi final home and away series:

1 V 3 & 2 V 4

And dump this 6 team playoff system.

I'd also like to see the three games against each other go too. Just a home and away game.

Replace the 3rd game with a knock out cup competition with for the first season, this seasons grand finalists, getting a bye.

There after, every season, the previous seasons cup finalists get a first round bye.

That way, you end up with 1/4 final, semi final (Could also be a home and away I guess)& Final.Lonegunmen2012-04-01 18:36:12
