I think a top 6 could be restructured in a similar way to the NRL.
I've been thinking:
1 v 6 2 v 5 3 v 4
Then the 3 Winners would go into a semi final with the 4th team being the highest ranked loser. Therefore you are rewarded for finishing higher in the regular season.

What would be the incentive for the 1st placed team not to put out their reserves? If they lose they will always be the highest placed loser and go to the semis anyway.
Theoretically, a home semi. However it is a solution without a problem. If you want to change the playoffs because you don't like a top 6 then fine, but if we are to keep top 6, I think the current system is superior to anything else.
edit: @ Tip-Dadi - the incentive for coming first is that you win the Premiership, which (to me at least) is more meaningful than the finals series Championship.
