Not sure if anyone knows this is starting on Tues - or where to post this but I've been waiting for it for a wee while now....
FOOTBALL MAESTROS SkySport 1 - Tues 26th @ 4pm, then again on Thurs 28th @ 5:30pm

THE achievements of Ryan Nelsen, Simon Elliott and Chris Killen in the cut throat world of British football are remarkable.

These three super talented New Zealanders are living their dream and proving to the football purists in the United Kingdom that Kiwis can kick the round ball.

A new six part series that begins on Sky Sport on February 26, entitled Football Maestros, is intended to celebrate the achievements of Ryan, Simon and Chris. Made by Lower Hutt company Fever Pitch Productions with the generous support of NZ Community Trust, VisitBritain, McDonalds, Lotto, Sony and Lufthansa, Football Maestros talks with the players to discover what makes them tick and how they got to where they are today.

The programme showcases the Blackburn Rovers, Fulham and Celtic and talks with two Manchester United legends, Mark Hughes and Gordon Strachan, the managers at Blackburn Rovers and Celtic respectively, on why they signed Ryan and Chris and how good they think the players really are.

The respect shown for these players by staff, supporters and local media in the UK is quite phenomenol. Ryan Nelsen, in particular, is revered in the Lancashire area. Mark Hughes admits he wouldnt contemplate selling Nelsen and local media put a fee of eight million pounds on his head. He has just signed a new five year deal with Rovers and Hughes rates Ryan as one of, if not the best buy he has made.

While Simon battles serious injury at Fulham, he takes Football Maestros on a guided tour of Craven Cottage and Fulhams palatial training ground in Surrey. North of the border Chris settles into life at one of the worlds biggest clubs, Celtic, having signed a three year deal with the Glasgow giants in July and helping them into the knockout stages of this seasons Champions League.

There are some fine athletes in New Zealand sport but few face the day to day pressures of performing to their very best like Ryan, Simon and Chris. For that they should be commended.

As part of the series, Ryan passes on some simple coaching tips and two people will be heading to the UK next season to take in a couple of Premiership matches as part of the competition being run in association with VisitBritain and Lufthansa.

yep, it was interesting and great to see the old footage from the 80's and early in the EPL

great for our 11 year old to realise that it's not just the old idiot he lives with who rabbits on about being a two-footed player

seems like a pretty accessible show for non football fans and their kids - good for the profile of football

I'll be watching them all (not that I was ever likely not to!)

Elliott failed to mention when he used take his ball and cricket wickets (goal posts) home prematurely when he got pissed at me and Buckle for beating him at one on one.

Stop with the name dropping seasons over.Great to see something that kids here in NZ can relate too.just hope some of them took on Ryans comments about training and how much they need to put in.

Great show. Bring on Episode 2.

It doesn't seem that any of them did the "every spare minute of your young life" training that is being encouraged around these parts for young kids. Just had fun, let the talent develop naturally, and look where they are now.

Guess i saw it differently then as I took from what Nelson had said that he had done the extra in an effort to raise his level.I cant see how letting it develop naturally here in NZ will put kids from here ahead of those from elsewhere.

the best pretty much always do extra from what I've heard (e.g Beckham and Cantona both known for staying behind after training and doing more)

but i guess players like Ryan N aren't forced into it by OTT parents, so they probably don't have any grudges about it, they just love getting out with a ball

Yeh doesn't Ryan Nelsen just speak well and say the right things, actually Simon Elliot was great too.
Poor old Killen, gets 10 min a game for Celtic if he's lucky. Must be due to score a goal someday soon.

Don't bother, it's crap.  Hugely disappointing.  But I notice Gordon Irving is involved.  Why is this man not commentating on the Phoenix home games - he's good?

Well J's Dog, you seem to be in a minority with that view

the consensus seems to be that it's a good programme - maybe it's aimed at the broader sporting audience, which might mean it's a bit light-weight in places - but i think it'll be useful in lifting football's profile in NZ

Maybe he (J Dog) was under the influence writing that comment. It seems rather contradictory.

Under the influence??  No, I don't think so.  I think Gordon Irving is the best football commentator we've had on TV.  Way better than Fred Gone Wrong anyway. I think his new show was just hugely disappointing.  And what's with the crap coaching tips?  Is it aimed at kids or adults?  I just thought it was all too disjointed.

Ryan Nelson was interesting and would be worth a series on his own.  Sorry, but Elliott and Killen have done nothing really to justify the attention other than get signed by big clubs.  Some people are just too easily pleased and just too grateful for the second rate entertainment Sky TV serve up as football entertainment.  The last World of Football without Dennis was like ameteur hour at the local rep.  These guys are footballers not TV presenters FFS!

In some respects I have to agree with Jose's Dog in that the 1st episode wasn't that 'special'

We got told that if you train hard, you'll get results. To me, you don't need a degree in rocket science to figure that out. Other than that (which got recanted about 10 times) there was no real 'insight' which I thought we might be getting.

Not sure we really need to know all about their favourite actors/movies etc. I don't imagine there can be too many episodes of this series. From what I've seen thus far, I figured it would have worked better as a one-off hour-long doco or something.

I'd rather find out the name of their first cat and what colour socks they think should be made illegal, than anything about any rugby player or 'celebrity' on the planet - so i'm still enjoying the series

A very good episode 3 on this afternoon, thoroughly enjoyed Ryan taking us on a tour of the Blackburn training facilities and an insight into their pre and post match analysis room.

Next episode is with Simon Elliot taking us on a tour of Craven Cottage but watch this one while its on.

Very enjoyable series so far, not the greatest football show ever but insightful and enjoyable all the same.

Watching tonight's episode I remain unconvinced that it's worth more than a single doco slot. Still, off to Glasgow next week, so we'll see what goes on up there. Hopefully we get to see what brand of cornflakes Chris Killen eats for breakfast, and find out his fave movie star.

Any football show is better than other stuff for sure, but I just don't think this series has much substance to it at all. About five minutes of interesting stuff, then cornflakes, movie stars, types of chairs they have in the players' lounge, etc etc.
