MONEY SPINNING EPL GAMES FOR THE NIX
By Matheson Sports Media

An English Premier League team will play in New Zealand later this year, Matheson Sports Media can reveal.

The Wellington Phoenix has been locked in discussions with two EPL teams for nearly a year.

In the last week negotiations have taken a significant step forward with an insider saying the tour now “will happen”.

Depending on the next phase of negotiations the Nix will either entertain one or two EPL sides in Auckland and Wellington in July.

While dates have yet to be confirmed, the venues – Auckland’s Eden Park and Wellington’s Westpac Stadium - are close to being locked in.

The two July games will offer the Nix a chance to drive some much needed monies into their business.

Crowds at Westpac have been disappointing this season and a cash injection from potential sell-outs in Auckland and Wellington will help take the financial pressure off the front office.

New Zealand has hosted numerous top flight English clubs in the past - including the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur – but in recent years have had to watch on as Australian football played host to powerhouses like United and Liverpool.

It’s a tribute to Nix CEO David Dome – currently in Australia at an A-League CEO’s meeting - that he has been able to secure the deals.

He has worked tirelessly – this time last year he was close to securing a deal with EPL giants Spurs, but in the end the maths just didn’t work.

This year the numbers add up and an announcement of the identity of the sides is pending.

EPL clubs traditionally release their off-season tour plans in the first week of April.

Starting the speculation: Everton or Spurs.

Pathetic. Not apathetic.

July games - could fit in with Spurs - usually does the Premier League Asia Trophy but this won't be happening in 2014 (World Cup year).

Very tenuous connection I know but Arsenal recently signed a deal with Huawei, maybe they will bring them out to Asia/Pacific on tour? http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/arsenal-and-huawei-in-global-partnership

Don't think that is tenuous at all. That's a massive link, especially since a game in Auckland would probably be paid for in part by Huawei (the reason we play Adelaide in Auckland is because Huawei wanted a game up there).

Eden park also suggests that itd be a team that would more or less fill the place.

Crowds will be minimal for clubs like those. In the 1980's even more glamorous clubs like Newcastle United (who toured with Gascoigne and Beardsley) only used to attract a few thousand vs the All Whites (5000 - 6000 crowds for each of three matches 1985). I saw a very good QPR side with Clive Allen, Glenn Roeder etc. the year after they were in the FA cup Final v Spurs and maybe 2000 people turned up at QE II in Christchurch.
But as a hard-core football nut, I'd be happy to see any EPL side...

Last time the Phoenix played a big foreign club, I remember the Phoenix doing particularly well v Argentinian powerhouse Boca Juniors (the Manchester United of Argentina - Maradona's old club) - won 2-1

Wonderful extended Argentinian highlights of the game (ten minutes) "Gooooooaaaaaalllllll !!!!!!!":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ztDJJZboOY

(Paul "Eeffeel") The Nix scored all three goals (Nix: McAllister, Durante; Boca: Hearfield o.g.) Very entertaining game!!!

Now that would be awesome. (Though I am not holding out any hopes)
I was thinking teams around West Brom/Cardiff on the EPL table as well. Anyone from 10-20 basically.
Also think West Ham with the Reid connection would be a big draw card.

I went and saw both those teams. Newcastle at Mclean Park Napier and QPR at the Basin Reserve Wellington. With the correct marketing, hopefully we would get a good crowd IF an EPL team tours here.

And they'll be scouting ASB clubs for new talent.

So if the EPL winners come over and you beat them then since we beat you that makes us:

Champions of England

Champions of Africa

Champions of Australia - beating CCM who went on to win A-League

Champions of Scotland - CCM beat Celtic, we beat CCM

Champions of Europe - Celtic beat Barcelona, CCM beat Celtic, we beat CCM

5th best team in the world...

...Now we just need to win the pesky ASB Premiership.

Think the huawei connection could be a goer, and could be the difference between securing a game for next year and discussions falling through in previous years. May need a large third party sponsor to be viable, even with a large crowd? At the very least may just help to oil the wheels a bit to make something happen.

Dates important. If its a big EPL club their top players could still be in Brazil or resting up after Brazil.

As much as I would LOVE this to be true... am pretty sure the Gooners are off to Malaysia this year (and poss China from vague memory) before they head home for the Emirates Cup.

Are Emirates the official airline of New Zealand yet?... oh no, it's just "Team" New Zealand... bugger - that coulda helped too! lol
