Without giving toooo much away- there hasn't been any final confirmations on the tour(s) mainly due to securing sponsorship deals around the tour. Broadcast rights have been sorted for months and the speculated dates are all pretty much on the money. They had hoped to announce the games on the 30th of March and then had to push that back to April 12 and then delay again.

Expect the club to really try and pump these games up potentially with TVC's and commemorative merch/kit.

I'm not sure if this has been noted anywhere else but don't be surprised to see the nix return to asia in their preseason - and in a more glamourous destination than India.

I'll be there regardless. This is ultimately about the Nix trying to set themselves up financially for next season so the quality of the opposition and the fact that it's a friendly doesn't really matter to me. I'll just suck up the ticket price also - as long as a minimum standard of entertainment is on offer, I'll support my club.

Hope the ticket price is low enough to appeal to the casuals though. I'd prefer they went for 30k at $50 rather than 15k at $100.

Rather strange, sounds like they were never really that keen. Victory or WSW would be my choices to replace them with. RBB would probably travel for it and add a lot of atmosphere.

You think teams would be keen to play prem teams.... must be money?  Victory could be good, most WSW fans wouldnt be allowed in the country.

Found where it was announced the Roar have declined the invite. Bottom of this link:

Roar managing director Sean Dobson said the club had turned down an invitation from Wellington Phoenix to take part in a four-team pre-season tournament in July in New Zealand which will also involve English Premier League clubs West Ham and Newcastle United.

Great to have all the touring sides and results listed in one place - thanks once again to the diligence of the amazing Jeremy Ruane.

One glaring mistake in this list though (watch out for reaction from the IRA!!!) - "League of Ireland" was a rep side from the Republic of Ireland, not Northern Ireland - and so a long way from being a "British" touring team!!! Sean Byrne from that side immigrated and played for Gisborne City and NZ. He sadly developed motor neuron disease and died in 2003. A legendary player in NZ in the 1980's. Sean's obituaries: http://www.dundalkfc.com/history/irish-football-bits-bobs/sean-byrne-tribute-by-ian-gillies-new-zealand/

http://foot.ie/archive/index.php/t-9524.html

So. interesting (and sobering) to note that out of 89 games between the NZ national team, provincial selections and club sides, and British pro club sides and FA elevens (discounting national teams which also feature on the list), the record reads:

P: 89       W: 6         D: 5      L: 78

and that included lesser teams touring like a Welsh FA eleven, Cardiff City (a minor team in the 1960's), Bournemouth and Dunfermline Athletic.

First win by a NZ side was a Central Region selection v Cardiff City in 1968.

The only NZ club side to get a result vs. British teams was Christchurch United who beat Hearts in 1976. Canterbury (mostly Christchurch United) also drew with Glasgow Rangers in 1975 and England B in 1978. I saw Canterbury losing narrowly 1-0 to a strong QPR side in 1983 (Clive Allen, John Gregory, Glenn Roeder). Truly Chch Utd were the Manchester United of NZ football in those days!

So, the challenge for the Phoenix is to match Christchurch United in beating a British club side.

Only two other NZ clubs have played touring British teams - Napier City Rovers and Mount Wellington lost to a Bournemouth side whose assistant manager was one Harry Redknapp in 1982. Harry came out of retirement to play his last games when Bournemouth were short of players late in the tour.

So the Phoenix will be only the fourth NZ club side to play a pro British team. Auckland City of course have only played pro teams from other countries in the World Club Championship.

We don't know anything at all. Everything in the media is completely unconfirmed at this stage, and as far as I'm concerned, is just speculation.

Details of games are unconfirmed but it seems certain West Ham are coming from what the NZ West Ham supporters club have been saying on the Hammers thread on Yellow Fever:

As one of the senior members of the Kiwi Hammers we've been in touch with both West Ham & Wellington Phoenix who have been very cooperative with us, which is fantastic

It looks as though we'll be getting an away section just for the West Ham fans at the Westpac Stadium definitely (will be working on the other venue when its announced). The Brisbane, Sydney & Melbourne hammers have been in touch with us and looks as though we'll be having a sizeable turnout, and judging by the response on KUMB there will be a couple of dozen of people coming over from England (Mostly people who had already planned on being here on holiday)

On top of this, we're emailing a lot of local pubs/bars/restaurants to see if we can get any sort of discounts arranged for those in claret & blue, I'll keep you all updated.

COYI!!!

We used to have meet up's quite regularly at Four Kings in Wellington however this season haven't been quite as active due to Premier League Pass. Regardless I'd still like to have regular meet ups even if it's at my house, we can hook it up to the big TV!

If you have facebook you can join us on here. We're mostly based in Wellington unlike Peter's lot who are based in Auckland (I do think they are still around but aren't as active any more. I sent him an email and asked if he would like to integrate the two groups but didn't hear back)

https://www.facebook.com/groups/kiwihammers/

We're also on twitter (used far less frequently at @KiwiHammers)

Or just give us an email at [email protected]

Um... ACFC 3 CCM 1; ACFC 1 Wngtn Phoenix 0; ACFC win over Jap 2nd Div (can't remember) before WCC... Not that I'm saying they've played any pro British teams BigP, but they have played and won against pro opponents outside the WCC.

Anyone hear Miles Davis on the radio today about West Ham? He was speaking to a guy in England about last nights EPL games and WestHam did not get a good review, nor Did Norwich. West Ham playing route one football. In fact the guy was being pretty honest about it and one wonders are we getting the hammers based on their Ron Greenwood and John Lyall days or based on Small Sam and his Bolton style of boredom.

Is route one football necessarily a bad thing if its effective? Stick up a couple of 6'8" centre forwards surrounded by some Olympic sprinters?

Bit odd this is being reported as something for phoenix fans to be excited about. But we see the phoenix every week, its west ham fans who should be excited.

Or that its some kind of major achievement for the club. In the end its just a commercial arrangement so I don't see why fans should be over the moon. Still I think they'll have no trouble at all selling out at just about any price.

Really? Don't share your optimism there. Considering LA Galaxy didn't sell out, back when the Nix were still the cool thing to go to, and they had David Beckham who was a far bigger drawcard for "average Joe" than Winston Reid or Andy Carroll. Sure West Ham play in a better league, but I'm not sure that's going to make a huge difference unless it's one of the big 4. How many die hard West Ham fans are there in NZ?

My mate annointed himself a hammers supporter approx 4 years ago just because he felt left out when our other mates were discussing football - his only interest in the sport was an unsavoury liking of films like the Football Factory and Green Street Hooligans. He's never watched a live game, only occasionally checks the table, never talks about it, and has certainly never been to a phoenix game. Yet he sends me a text the other day "omg westham are coming to wellington, I assume you're going, can I come with you? get me a ticket?".

Its not just 1 event tho, it will be 3. Only die hard fans will try to attend all 3 matches, the casual fan won't travel to the other 2 non local games.

I live outside of Wellington, and it's a game like this that would bring me to Wellington to watch the Phoenix take on a different, high quality opposition. It's definitely something for me as a Phoenix fan to be excited about.

NB - Toon are playing in Hong Kong on May 23-25 ("soccer sevens" FFS!  What a stupid concept).

No definitely agree, that's why I think it will deffo sell out, I just don't get the line that this is something that's being by the club for Phoenix fans. I'm sure most fans would prefer a successful team week in week out, this feels like a side show really

Yeah, but if it works out financially then hopefully it contributes to getting the successful team that we all want.
The fans get to enjoy watching an EPL team at the same time as providing a financial boost to the Nix, which should ultimately also benefit the fans.
