I guess the only way to solve our defensive woes is to score as many goals as possible.

haven't seen the video of the game yet , but from the stand ...

Low points, the result - obviously, poor communication and decision-making for their two goals, that card happy w**ker, players tiring in last 10 and misplacing short balls, a seeming lack of willingness to shoot (perhaps this forum needs to look at how they responded to Ferrante -at least he has the balls to have a lash), not one of Daniel's more influential performances - for me their goal came -initially- as a result of Daniel waiting for the ball to come to him on the edge of their box

High points - Tim Brown's first full run (he adds a lot in my view), Smeltz's workrate, Elrich's ability, YF - in good voice, Lochead in patches, Moss'es shot stopping and 1:1 efforts, felipe's imminent return to fitness,  edit - oh yeah and some well-timed tackles from Doddy

a hard game to watch at times, I really felt good at 1/2 time but that ending was a killer

I still have complete faith in Ricky and our lot!!

Here's to some points from Adelaide!!!

We should have won that. Daniel has to stop playing with the ball, and get a f**king cross in.

Agree, mostly. But communication starts from the back and too many times today the defence was called on to clear a ball that could eaily have been dealt with by Moss. Despite his shot blocking, he would be disappointed with the first goal.

Still wanted Ricki to ring the changes a lot earlier than he did - I mean only one sub at that on 83 mins after your international team and Smeltz, Brown, Christie and Lochhead had played 90 mins on Wednesday - ffs. And the fact that Elrich was making his first start and Lia is still short of match fitness - disappointed.

Does he have the guts to drop Aloisi or even sub him????

I'll watch the replay at midnight tonight just to confirm first impressions  - overall it was a very enjoyable game and there were some very promising plays. Defensively there were some stupid moves; missed tackles, passing the ball straight to the opposition and for the forwards there was the usual dithering in front of the goalmouth instead of shots on goal -  but didn't spoil the overall enjoyment of the game.

This week's best chant - when this large bird flew over the fever everyone looked up, pointed and started  chanting 'seagull .... seagull ....' - hilarious

bahahaha - thats what it was - we were chanting segal segal at the security guard.

Other notes from the game - I agree on the playing around in the box aspect. Some of the stuff was painful to watch in second half. It is almost as if our players are scared to have a shot. We work hard to get into the box then instead of shooting we pass. We need someone to be goal hungry and shoot.

As for subbing Aloisi I don't think that is necessary at the moment he is doing well for us. Without his leadership  I think the phoenix would struggle far more than they are already.

But we need to sort out our defense It is woeful.
I say clone Karl Dodd

i like Clebo as a character and am disappointed he has cemented a place, but i do feel O'Dor is more mobile and less likely to fall foul of card-happy idiots like today's ref

Please Dr quack, come on the forum and tell me I'm not compleletly wrong to loathe who ever was in the middle today, for me he was the worst ref since the Jets match here

Please dont have a go at daniel. he had some briliant touches and great long switches, and gives us a positive and creative attitude we desperately miss in nz football. some of his touches were sublime. id much prefer he does that than pass it backwards inside every time he gets it hoping some else will take responsibiility.

christie's error was kinda freak, but he is limited - and those kind of mistakes get made by limited players at times. feel sorry for him, playing out of place and doing a job than nobody else will - but it was a terrible error

Where do I start? I may not make any friends with what I am about to say.

Moss - when is he going to cut out the punching and start catching. Punching is inacurate and today especially,  his punching was going straight to the CCM players. An excellent shot stopper but he parks on his line too much and too much friggen punching. Catch the friggen thing, the CCM keeper was catching all day.

Plodder. Up until that last minute sh*t, I thought he had a very good game and put in some decent tackles. Our Central defenders were at 6's and 7's for most of the game. It was like they had never partnered before.

Daniel seemed to be missing Felipe to me. Tried hard and sometimes tried too hard.

Aloisi had what I believed, was his best game for us yet and Elrich - what a goal, got it from top of Aisle 23 and had the perfect view. Tried a lot but in the last 15, I thought he'd done his dash.

Our future midfield of Daniel, Aloisi, Felipe & Elrich is about as good as it gets at any club.

Smeltz? What an awesome game from him today, a couple of muffed chances but he was everywhere up front.

13 minutes into the game and I thought great, not easy and early goal and 120 seconds later I abused myself for thinking the thought.. Another friggen soft touch goal. We did enough to have won the game handsomely but we gave it away.

I'd like to see Paxton in and Moss to do an extensive catching the ball from any position course. I love the guy but this weakness is being found out now and exploited.

Thats the way I saw it, sorry if you're all pised at me.

Just passing on what we do no offence intended, especially to RH as he an excellent coach

Lawie appointed from day Alex Tobin as our defence coach. Alex is the most capped Austrlian player by a long way. Further he is prehaps the best central back Australian ever produced and that includes Lucas Neil. We have lost one player to Germany after being selected to play for Socceroos, Michael Beautaum, currently two other backs in Neil Boogaard, Olyroos & Deen Heffernan Soccerros, none of these players had even state rep experience. Then we signed  Tony Vidmar a retired Socceroo defender.

I guess the Mariners put heaps of time with an excellent coach just for the defence, and it's paid huge dividends.  We also have a midfield and goal keeping coach.

As I said it's what we do no offence intended so good luch for the future

Socceroo/ Mariner / Whangarei

Thanks. I know it's negative but I hope it is taken more as constructive critism. These are issues that can be solved on a training field.

We all see glimpses of this team in full flight and frankly, it's scarey. Some of the good stuff is of the highest quality, but thats the problem, we see only glimpses. We know it can happen though, if only the players could see it too!

Week after week this defence astound me. It's not just the tackling, but it's the lack of anticipation, dreadful vision, poor first touch, no control and even worse... pathetic distribution.

Even my young son understands that if your options are limited, just hoof it out for a throw in. Ho many times do we give the ball away at the back from an incomplete pass or from poor contact with the ball. It's shocking.

The Midfield is working hard but is a bit left-biased at the moment and our final balls into the box have definitely been improving, but are still lacking the appropraite quality.

Smeltz might be working hard, but he doesn't pull the trigger anywhere early enough. Seems to want get to a one-on-one before he'll even try and score, as do a few too many others.

The annoying thing is that with some work on the defence we could be looking a much better team. Minor changes, major impact... most of the goals we concede are just plain ridiculous and you find yourselves laughing at how inept we've been rather than commenting on the goal... don't think I've ever been heard to say "..there's nothing we could have done about that...!"

It's just getting embarassing now.

Elrich has improved the right side considerably. The Elrich-Plodder combo isn't as good as the Daniel-Lochhead one, but it will come (hopefully).

The honeymoon is well and truly over and we can't keep slapping ourselves on the back and saying how well we've done just to be here, fans are great, top support etc.  With the team we've got, our results SHOULD be better.

We were exposed badly yesterday by a team missing several key players.  Two goals conceded from bad individual errors plus giving away a silly pen because Dodd was out of position.

Daniel had a poor day by his standards and looked like he wanted to be somewhere else.  Our crossing was woeful and decision making in the final third was crap.  As good as Dodd has been, I feel we're lacking a real leader at the back.

The only positives yesterday were Brown and Elrich.  And that was as good a goal as you will see anywhere this season.

Can't see us making the play offs now.  On this form, we will even lose in Perth.

Agreed. Too often he charges up the field around their box with the ball then stops and turns, waiting for support, when he should have a crack himself.

Haha yeah I saw that. t**ser. Everything I was going to say has pretty much been covered, but will reiterate the fact Moss needs to catch the ball! Unnessecary pressure comes from moments llike he had today, he is gold the rest of the time. Only other problem I see is the lack of willingness to take someone on 1-1. When Felipe is back it is noticable that when he skins someone, the chances are that much better because they have lost a defender. Thats obvious. But too often imo, we back down from taking on players and opt to put a ball in around them. Sorry for the rant, just heartbroken. Haha

O'Dor had another shocker. Put Clebo back in Centre with Dodd

Surely you are joking. Cleberson was shown up again last week against the Jets - granted he was out of position, but pace and the ability to defend are important anywhere in the back four - I'd be surprised if he features again this season...and that'd be fine by me.

Definitely not! We need to keep Lochhead, Dodd, and Christie in the starting line-up. I'm still undecided about O'Dor though.

Elrich obviously an obvious positive from the game. Him and Felipe could carve teams apart when they play together.

It was a great game to watch, but for the tragic few minutes.

Does anyone have links to the highlights or goals? I'd love to see the Elrich goal, and the CCM penalty miss.

Worst game of the season by the lads, to many long passes to no-one, when they should ave kept it. Lochead and Elrich had a good games...Daniel hardly got the ball and when he did he had no space to move it, the times he did ave room he did great stuff.

Next week..... Daniel LMF, Elrich AMF, Felipe RMF(if fit), Aloisi DMF...Best midfeild in the league.
