He wants 100% payout on his contract.

[edited by smithy: in case anyone else is struggling to find the story, the relevant bit is:

There are other money issues at the club too. Mr Pignata confirmed yesterday that Brazilian midfielder George is seeking full payment of his contract after being axed by the Phoenix earlier this month.

"At the moment we are talking with the PFA (Professional Footballers Association) in Australia and we are trying to settle the matter as quickly as possible. He is seeking a full payout ... but we believe our offer is fair and reasonable."

Mr Pignata refused to say how much the contract was worth, or what the Phoenix offered as compensation to George, who was axed along with fellow Brazilian Cleberson.]

We should have signed him on a dollars per minute basis - and then 10 of us could have seen (edit = sent) him off with a whip round.

Those MOM polls must have gone to his head.

Hopefully, it'll get sorted in our favour.

I can't understand where Benjamin and (I think) Black Plauge are now?  They were the ones claiming that George was the best player on the planet, and would score 40 goals for us this season, despite not being able to control a ball.

Stop that!
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Still here Frankie, and as I mentioned on another thread - I've been very dissapointed by George this season (he doesn't appear to be the player he was pre-Portugal), but also by Ricki's decisions regarding the lad - he's a striker and he's mainly been used as an advanced midfield, in Brasil he had the ball played ahead of him to run onto, here he's had the ball into him with his back to goal...  Didn't suit him.

At the end of the day, he didn't do enough to warrent staying at the club and problems needed sorting elsewhere (namely - at the back).  Ricki's tactic of playing 4-4-1-1 and the signing of Elrich pretty much killed George off.

But like I said, very dissapointed with the lad.

Poison because he expects his employer to fulfill their contractual obligation?

If it was a 'mutual' decision to end his contract, as the club originally suggested, then I'm sure he wouldn't be haggling.  Ricki got his scouting wrong and the club should pay the price.

Obviously he controls his bank account a lot better than he did a football.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

i agree, if i was in his place id be after the full amount too. id feel a bit aggrieved if i was him, never given a proper chance, played out of position, only used for 10 or 15mins cameos.

both releasees were bloody hard done by, and i wouldnt be suprised to see either of them sign for other a-league clubs, especially cleberson.

just because a player didnt work out the way the coach wanted him too doesnt mean that player should just accept less then what he's owed and leave.

Doubt we'll be seeing them play for another A League team. Think they're the only two Brazilians I've ever seen who couldn't play football

I'd be very surprised to see him stay in Australia...  From what I've heard he couldn't wait to get back to Brasil and see his kids.

Would love to see George sign for Perth to be honest, and get a run up front as an out and out striker...  It'd be interesting to see if he's still got it.

I think the reason Robinson so often ends up flat on his back after he's had a shot, is that he's trying to see where the ball went...

George didn't impress. That's for sure.

He didn't have many opportunities, also, to be fair.

The team axed him and he should be compensated for that. That's just plain right.

If tomorrow your employer decides that you're not good enough at work and sacks you, you get compensation. That's how it goes. He might be greedy, or he might be doing this just as a revenge, I agree with you, but it's in his rights - and I'd probably do the same if I didn't make the cut.

At least, they could have played him a few more times and see how he went. he really got bugger all chances. Old and O'Dor might have been axed as well at this point.

This isn't the under-8s where everyone gets a go and MOTM is shared around.  He wasn't good enough to be picked - end of story.

Hey man, I never said that George was a great player, I had hope he was, like everyone else. But hey what can we do.

Botafogo - Rio de Janeiro and Wellington Phoenix, my two teams til death do us part.

Wait a minute. If you signed a contract to work abroad and moved your girlfriend and your life to the other side of the world, and your contract was for a year, you would expect the full payment for the year. If ricky wasnt going to fufill a contract he shouldnt have signed him.

It would depend on why the contract was ended.  If you breached the agreement in some way you may be entitled to less or none.

Basically we know F*&k all of the facts.

I'm not particularly upset by him asking for the dosh, just about how disappointing he was on the park.

I did sign a contract before I moved here, but I didn't get released from my contract. Maybe I'm just good at my job

the thing is, how do you know? he played nothing but the sporadic last 10' here and there.
Besides, if he really wasn't up to the A-League standards perhaps we shouldn't have signed him since the beginning. Although we did get 2 stars such as Felipe and Daniel..but I mean, if you watch a player's DVD you should be able to tell whether he's total rubbish, OK, or an awesome players.

My problem is that I think that in the XXI century everyone is 'decent' at playing footy, cause the sport has been playing for more than a 100 years. So it's not hard to sign a 5/10 player nowadays, but as the standards improve worldwide you need better and better players everyday.

Cleberson has accepted a mutual termination which involves a figure in which both parties agree. Cleberson would love to stay on in NZ, so who knows?

However, George is looking for the full amount. The chances of George staying in NZ or moving to Australia are zero. There are some SERIOUS behind the scenes stuff involving George that Phoenix could hold against him.

If they pay him the full amount - they should make him drive taxis for the next few months. Might as well get an income out of him

- speaking to people involved with the club who train with, or watch him train, every day

- watching him at training personally

- watching him in those 10 minute spells

There is a lot more to it than watching a 90 minute game once a week.  Believe or not the Phoenix exist outside of the time that we watch them on TV or at the stadium.  Liverpoolfan1 knows more than most on here

How do we know he didn't "meet his potential". Probably he had. His potential just wasn't as good as what the Phoenix thought.

Completely agree.  However the club agreed a contract and therefore should do the right thing and pay what's due.  Just goes to show that not all Brazillians are great (i've seen some dodgy ones at Mermaids too!)

Now I know I've written some dross in my time but this takes the bisciut........ If we had a team of 5/10 players (compared to any European Prem Division side) we'd be 12 points clear at the top and already celebrating the championship.
