-----------------Paston

******----Dodd---O'Dor----Lochhead

-------Johnson-------Aloisi

Ferrante-------Campos-------Daniel
------------------Coveny

Although in an ideal world you'd have a proper winger instead of Ferrante.

It's OK to rate our players at the moment but to predict how we will go without having played any games as a team or having finalised the squad is a bit pointless. Nonetheless I feel quite confident that it is starting to come together, still injuries etc. may play a part so will have to wait and see. I think the whole season hinges on getting a couple of out and out star quality players in there. I think Ricki has played his cards well so far and am looking forward to the final few announcements. Bring it on!!!!!!!!!!!!

Exactly, you dont want to read too much into trainings, theyre only mild indications.

Wait for pre-season cup if anything, should be a cracker.

Lol, the good old doom-and-gloom NZ sporting attitude (before it's even begun, nonetheless) comes out yet again.

I can't believe what i'm reading.  It didn't take long for the knives to come out.  First training session today and already many of you have turned and talking more like the cove than the yellow fever.  Could we please stop stabbing our players in the back until they actually lose games???

I for one are thoroughly confident that we will when win the league, and as a passionate supporter i will believe this until it is mathematically impossible.  i.e not prior to pre season training.

Nice one dazzla, completely agree.

There is certainly no need to start insulting people, calling them immature (case of pot...kettle...black maybe) brain dead etc, just because they disagree with your point of view.

Personally I think it is a pointless exercise in comparing teams player by player escpecially when you have a coach like Riki who seems capable of putting together a team where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

I won't even get too down if the pre-season doesn't go too well as it can take some time for a new team to gel, sort out the combinations and get used to how each other play

Well with Brockie, Roddy and other U20's at training today can we assume they are in the Phoenix interests now?
Permalink Permalink

i'd assume anyone in the U/20s would be of interest to the club. (with the exception of those already contracted elsewhere/in the USA college system)

hopefully we can pick up a solid young defender (pref right) from in that squad that Herbs can turn into a quality player both at A-Legaue and AW level in the next few years.

With rumours of 2 more signings, a striker and a defender (quality at that) I'd  be happy. Although we'd still be 1 position missing, I wouldnt be as worried as I was when I started this thread

Interesting point that, in the qualifiers the preferred Right back was Tim Schaeffers who struck me as a much better CB than Right back.  I don't think he's the answer for us.  Maybe the better options would be Peverley/Boxall/Pelter who seem to be more mobile and might be able to cover a variety of spots.

You can say that again. I've seen exactly that with Toronto in the MLS this year. They lost their first four games before they found their stride, but now they are a strong side, having lost just one of their last 5. It may take some time, but the Phoenix will find their game.

i'd be very happy if any (or all) of those guys you mentioned signed...all three great players for the future.

The news of a brazilian striker and defender is encouraging . It would leave us with
Goalkeepers: Paston, Moss
Defence:Brazilian import, O'Dor, Dodd , Lochhead, Old, Christie
Midfeild: Lia, Ferrante, Johnsen, Campos, Daniel, Brown,  Aloisi.
Strikers:Brownlee, Coveny, Barbourousas, Brazilian import.

Is it me or does the midfield look extremely good? It has great depth and very good players.
If we play 4 in the midfield it will mean that 3 of those 7 quality players will miss out. Which to be honest i cant see.
But comparitively our defence looks very weak and lacks depth unless they sign new players, somehow i think that we will see one of our midfielders drop back to the defence or play 5 in the midfield and three at the back. I really hope that we sign another quality defender. If we do i think we can be a serious threat in the A-League because our midfeild will be amoung the strongest in the league if these imports are as good as they sound!

Jack Pelter actually struggled to hold his place in the end didn't he?  Sam Peters is also a RB option for the under 20s but he's probably a wee way off this level, he's still at school.

Peters, looked good throughout this year, but last couple month at the U20's v Wgtn Select and trainings looks average.

Pelter will not make the cut. To slow. (Just a prediction based on close observation- no crucifixion please).

That's the idea Ronaldoknow, if you indicate that there is some basis for your opinion you are entitled to it and shouldn't be crucified.

Anyway my opinion is pelter is from canterbury united and therefore be default is an absolute champion and should defintely be signed.

Gee thanks Dazzla. Seriously I don't think he will make the squad because of his pace and his on going back problems. Shame really as I also come from Canterbury and would love to see him make the grade. I actually can't think of anyone out of last years squad that would be worth considering.

If we get one more decent central defender then Ricki can (and  I believe will) play 3 at the back and use those quality midfielders to good effect. He tried this in Sth America with the AW's without qaulity central defenders. This is the reason why Hay & Bunce got overlooked.

GK - Paston
RB -
LB - Lockhead
CD - Dodd
CD - Cleberson (subject to the lad agreeing terms)
DM - Aloisi (capt)
RW - Dodd
LW - Daniel
AM - Campos
CF - Coveny
CF - George (subject to the lad agreeing terms)

One player from being a pretty well balanced starting XI - sort out a right back and your on fire.  League position will all depend on how the back-ups fair though.

Just wait til wat riki signs for the rest of the spots and i wouldnt be worried yet.

Celtic mate, I saw Daniel for the best part of a season when I was over there - he's quality goods.  We've all seen that he's on a two year contract, and we've all seen that just about every other Brasilian - Fred, Felipe Campos, Cassio - of quality that has come to A-League have been on one year deals...  Does it not say something that Ricki and the boys saw fit to nail Daniel down for two years?

Brazilian striker.  I've heard he's on the way to the A-League and others on here have stated that Ricki is looking at a South American striker.  I just put 2 + 2 together.  Fairly sure it's Nix due to the timing of various comments.

I want spanish or portuguese players. I like their style and the way they play the game. A bit too late now tho, i think Rickis made up his mind.

Spanish and Portugese players are hard to get due to the money already invested in their own leagues.

If it is Jorge from Botafogo, all i can say is keep dreaming. Black Plague would be able to confirm that Jorge Henrique from Botafogo is a starting player, who combines up front with Dodo and Ze Roberto. His transfer fee woudl have to be over a million dollars, and his salary demands would be simply enormous.
Even if financial terms could be met, Jorge would have to be crazy to leave a team on fire like Botafogo to come to Australia when European teams would definately have their eyes on him.

Well said Football. Yes he is a starting player but has not quite found consistent form yet, has a blinder now and then for sure. Dodo is the man and Ze Roberto feeds him perfect opportunites. My team is doing damn well and tomorrow will be dificult playing Palmeiras in Sao Paulo, its been 17 years since Fogao won there!!! Good luck guys!!

haha everyone asks me that!! My girlfriend is Flamenguista and all her friends too, but I really like Botafogo. So here I am supporting a team that has had some bad luck but continues to play really well.

As for your team going to Libertadores lets just say you guys were lucky not to face fogao in the final!!!

Hope to see you in the libertadores after a strong Brasileirao campaign!!!

George rather than Jorge - guy has been playing in Portugal for a couple of years.  Very cocky, confident, out and out goalscorer.  If he signs he'll be a terrific addition to the Nix starting line-up.  Getting him to sign would be a real signal of intent because he'll stretch the budget.

Most imported players sign one year deals because the buying club has doubts - in George's case it would be a simple matter of the club not being able to afford to pay him over the close season.

I wouldn't think that he would stretch the budget, especially that he hasn't played football for any team in 2007.
I really hope he does well at Wellington and that he provides another dimension up front. He really has not done much since about 2003 of any significance.
In portugal he scored about 20 goals from 110 games so his record whilst not embarassing, is not amazing either.
I would think George coming is more a case of  him needing a club rather than him being chased.

Black Plague, all I can say is THANK GOD you weren't influenced by your girlfriend as Flamengo and their supporters suck! . After Fluminense, I have a soft spot for Botafogo.

It would have been a huge final if Botafogo has made it, but the past is the past, and Fluminense are the champions!

Your team is playing really well at the moment, and have some great players, especially Dodo, Ze Roberto, Lucio Flavio and Juninho. Me thinks a Libertadores spot beckons.
