Costa has to start now, we need to be playing a striker.
Costa is not a striker........
according to our playing roster he's a forward...along with greenacre, ifill and chen

1: Costas game is built on speed, and pace with the ball at feet. He is an ideal man to run off another striker with the dabs and flicks or take men on from 25 out. In this league, there is no space for that because most teams sans us, pack their back 4 into a back 6.
2: Greenacre is a strong back top goal man and holds up the ball very well. Surprising strong as well in holding the possession up. He ideally needs someone to run off of him. Enter Costa.
3: We only started looking threatening when Sydney went to 10. Why? Because all of a sudden there was room down the flanks for the wide men to operate and Troy Hearfield suddenly became effective and we were able to cross the ball. Watch the tape.
Based on that, we either have to have big men running in on the crosses (not Costas real strength due to his size) or lob it over the back 4 and let Costa run onto it. Not our natural game.
I agree we need a striker up there and I don't think Costa is the answer. Not because he is not good enough (I think he has proved he at least belongs at that level) but more because his strengths wont suit out natural game.
Solutions? Sorry I don't have one. Maybe Costa for Caceres and let Ifill play his more natural roaming role?
Grumpy old bastard alert
Paston, Sigmund, Muscat and Greenacre. That 4 of your first choice players and McKain will only be getting his legs back (bad pun)
Credit to Hearfield for stepping up and Crowther for showing some shot stopping ability but take 4 players out of any starting XI (I'm talking A League before someone throws in Man U or Chelski) and you are guaranteed to see performances slide and results drop

Mark Viduka or Josh Kennedy. In both cases, only as a guest.
The first concern is that neither would come cheap.
Viduka has continuing problems with an ankle injury. He's apparently considering retirement, may lack fitness, and there's a risk he'd re-injure himself. Some folks think that an Australian franchise would get more out of Viduka, but that's only a problem if they put in an offer.
Kennedy finished his J-League season on the 5th, playing a full match against Shimizu. Fitness and possible injuries shouldn't be problems. IIRC, the J-League is back in March, so Nagoya will have mixed feelings about Kennedy playing for WPFC during January.
There are quite a few other target men out there who might be interested in doing a stint as a guest, but these two are the best domestic candidates.

Chris Greenacre may be back on the field for the Phoenix sooner than expected after a scan revealed injury not as bad as first thought
Some positive news for the Wellington Phoenix with striker Chris Greenacre's injury not as bad as initially feared.
Greenacre has missed the last two A-League matches and there were fears he could be out for five to six weeks.
However, Phoenix Chief Executive Tony Pignata says a visit to a specialist has eased those concerns. He says it is now possible that Greenacre could be back on deck for the January 9 match against Brisbane Roar.
Wellington's next match is against Adelaide on Friday before a two week break.
Meanwhile, the Phoenix should have a new goalkeeper on the books in time for the match against Adelaide. Liam Reddy's transfer from Brisbane is expected to be confirmed today.
Pignata says the Roar are happy to release Reddy, but just need to confirm a replacement in their own squad first.
Reddy will come in for All Whites keeper Mark Paston, who is out for the rest of the season. Paston fractured his leg in a training clash with Phoenix skipper Andrew Durante a fortnight ago.
