Halberg Awards - Miles Davis

I was just listening to Radio Sport as I popped out for lunch and Miles was revving everyone up about the Halberg Awards and the eligibility of Team NZ, Brad Butterworth etc when a nice chap rang and said the Phoenix should be nominated for Team of the Year based purely on what they have done for football in NZ.

He then added a new category should be added for support of the season and that Yellow Fever would win this hands down for the passionate and committed support shown to our team regardless of results.....

LOVE IT....!!!

Was listening to him today as well, he's really tying to rark people up about the awards - mind you he always does.

On the popularity of cricket with the general populace in England:

"I didn't see a Cricket bat until I was 12, and even then it was because we were using it to do over the off-licence around the corner."

I'm going to be honest here, I have no idea who this Miles Davis is...?
I know Miles Davis the Jazz man, but who is this guy?

Miles is a Londoner and West Ham fan.  Works for Radio Sport these days, although he was with Pacific/Live at some point as well.

Before he moved to Auckland he was a Wellington lad and helped host a weekly football show called the House of Football on Sky.

He is a huge Wind-Up merchant.

On the same theme there was a piece in the Dom Post last night, ostensibly about the boredom of Super 14,...and once more the threat of the Phoenix taking over a larger fan base than rugby was mooted....the inner circles of rugby should be afraid....very afraid! (Apologies if this article is already discussed..too lazy to find out). HarryHotspur2008-02-21 15:36:29

I heard from someone who has commercial dealings with Wellington rugby that they are concerned and are trying to figure out how to get some of the enthusiasm that football gets from the fans.

all i can suggest is change the shape of the ball and tell people not to use their hands  - that should fix all thei worries

There are posters around town for 'Citizen Cane' in aisle 2 at the stadium.

Not sure what the history is but you'd hope they have not gone the 'Mad Caps' route and tried to manufacture something.

It never ends well.

NO...not in any way.

I can occasionally enjoy Rugby as do many on here, but we're about the Phoenix and football.  To me personally it's an important distinction.  There are ways to support different sports and Rugby traditionally is supported in a different fashion.

I've had a tirade on this recently already (sorry BigDunc)

I have seen nothing on it other than the signs so it could be independent, I just doubt it.

i realise you're doing a wind up Ballane but

why spend money on wit, passion and energy when you've already got "Hurricanes, Hurricanes" and face paint

and why spend money to pay 100s of people to yawn, cry with frustration at the tedium of it all and beg to be let out

as News says it's two different kinds of support

I'm sure they have their fun, but ...

I seem to remember him hugely winding up a referee a few years back.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Haha,
He had a bit of push and shove with the ref after he wasnt happy with him at Newtown Park in 2003, I was playing with one of his sons for wharfies reserves. It was funny as, he was swearing and carrying on like noones business all up in the refs face on the final whistle.
Oh Wellington is wonderful. We got the wind, the rain and the phoenix. Oh Wellington is wonderful.

yeah the club got in a bit of crap for that. We had to give a good behaviour bond to Captital Footy!

The Citizen Cane guys are an independent offshoot of the official Hurricanes supporters group (the Hurricane Chasers), set up much like YF was. Real early days and their existence has come as a surprise to the Canes marketing guys.  BTW the Canes guys love the Nix. One of them (not a player) attended many games at the Ring of Fire, loved it, and he's has also been seen at the Underground and the 4 Kings watching the away games. He may even front tomorrow night. He realises their product is stodgy and punters want more. I'm a season ticket holder for both and I just hope the atmosphere at the Canes matches gets back to what it used to be, which was on a par with the Nix games. For me it's not a competition, rather a luxury to have the two around to support.
