Not sure if this has bin posted. From todays Sunday News

RICKI Herbert not one for making rash predictions has guaranteed playoff football for the Nix at the business end of next season.

The Wellington Phoenix coach amused by critics comparing his side to the failed New Zealand franchises the Kingz and the Knights made the prediction last night.

He told Sunday News: "The club's second year will be all about being in the top four. I sense that. At the moment we are competitive, we are close but we are making mistakes and we're getting punished.

"That's OK for year one it won't be OK for next season.

"When I signed on to coach the Nix it wasn't all about our first season. If it had been I would have filled the squad with seasoned pros.

"But we're trying to build something here. That's always been my rationale and I won't change my tune on it.

"All I can say is when I took on this job I signed on for three years. The first year was always going to be bloody tough.

"The critics forget that not too long ago we had a brand new chairman, no board, no offices, no training ground, no training gear we didn't even know what the colours where going to look like.

"Three months later we had 23 players moving to Wellington and then the season starts. We don't have any of those distractions next year.

"Next year, when the media ask me for a prediction I'll tell them, hand on heart, top four.

"And if we don't make it, then the chairman can make any decisions that need to be made at the end of the season.

"I'm quite happy for that statement to be made public."

Herbert's confidence is in a large part down to his recruiting something for which he gives the club a 75 percent pass mark.

"That other 25 percent, that's something we can make up next season."

The only dud Herbert recruited for the Nix's inaugural season is the Brazilian centreback Cleberson.

He's failed to impress in any of his three appearances, something the coach puts down to "communication difficulties".

It's easier, he says, for fellow Brazilians Felipe and Daniel to adapt to a new environment because they're forwards.

"At the back, though, communication and understanding the team's structure is vital."

Herbert who doubles as the All Whites coach had the chance to sign his national skipper Danny Hay, but passed. The decision led to Hay changing his focus, retiring from international football and taking charge of an academy in Auckland.

It's a decision Herbert wishes he could revisit.

"Experience (at the back) is what we need," said Herbert. "We need someone who, from an organisational point of view, can take charge.

"Someone like Danny would have been ideal. You can't dismiss that. When you look across the league, most of the sides have that type of person and that type of player anchoring their defence.

"I went for a South American defender instead ... "

Do you think the Phoenix will make next year's playoffs?

It would be interesting to see what cover Ricki would sign if a midfielder or striker was to get a long term injury. It would probably be a defender the way he talks in this article.

Top marks to Ricki for having not only trhe guts to answer his critics[ & boy are there plenty of these given the demise of sport et al in NZ currently!], but he has had the courage of his conviction to answer his true critics, the loyal suppoerters who week in & week out turn up to support such a great team. Be patient NZ - previous ill informed supporters of FOOTBALL have expected immediate results, obviously these "supporters" of the beautiful game are in total ingnorance of the code. Let's judge after the next home game as to our long term progress & goal [excuse the pun]

An honest and forthright opinion. Well Ricki, I for one, will be buying a season ticket next season, That's my endorsement of where I think you and the club are heading. Top 4? Bonus.

Herbert has never been one to shy from a challenge and I believe the way the club is running is a fantastic endorsement of everyone involved with the Phoenix.

hopefully, that will help us all get a sense of what to realistically expect this season,

i for one am feeling o.k. about our efforts and results so far, a bit anxious about these 3 games and Sydney w/o the AWs but Ricky, the backroom staff, Tony and Terry have all done a brilliant job in my view,

and as to the decision to sign Clebo, 2 1/2 outa 4 ain't bad (and there's still a chance Clebo might come right  - at CB!)

It's refreshing to hear some honest answers from a coach. (e.g. him admitting he probably made a mistake not signing Hay and signing Clebs - coaches don't often admit these things.)

Its still early on for Clebo though. He will get his chance later on, but remember that Daniel has been here much longer than the other Brazilians and basically anchored his place in the team right away, while Felipe only just managed to get a chance and shined from it. But Clebo is a stereotypical defender; big, tall and hard tackling. And like Ricki said, he's the only Portugese speaking player in an entire back line that consists of Aussies and Kiwis! Give him a chance.

BUT, saying that, if he fails to take his opportunities, then he'll be first for the cut at the end of the season. I also feel that Greg Draper will be cut, for his own development and lack of opportunities at the Nix, while Costa will stay due to living in Wellington anyway. I also have a funny feeling that Brownlie may opt to leave due to lack of opportunities. I can see Ricki choosing Smeltz, Coveny, George and Costa as his top 4 strikers, leaving Royce out in the cold.

I kinda wish Brownlie had been given more of a shot. He aint a bad player at all.

Not that attacking is our major problem at the moment, but eh.

I hope we will with all my heart. It's a bit early. I think that if we're able to keep most of the players we have now plus maybe 2 or 3 (not more) new good players, if we play like when we're trailing (and we attack like no other team in the A-League) and we combine that to a solid defence.
Then yeah. i say we can even reach the final.

Yeh he's a good player, but Coveny will always be chosen ahead of him, sadly. I'm not a fan of Coveny or the EVIL THAT IS MICHEAL FERRANTE!!  I don't care if he has a great work rate and good passes etc, he couldn't hit a barn door when shooting! He players a similar position to Paul Scholes, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard and they can at least get it on target.

Sorry for the off-topic Ferrante rant, lol.

I totally agree with you about Clebo. I even think he's a primo Center defender!!

In regards to the rest, yeah you're right - I just hope, personally, that Ricky will keep Brownlie instead of Coveny. No offence to Vaughan (I like his style) but next year he'll be 36 (if I'm not wrong). Johnson will be 33 and Aloisi something like 32. It's good to have seasoned players - but not oldies :D

Im glad we never signed Hay,  he is not loyal and is disruptive in the dressing room.  May be a big fish in NZ but is just a small fish over all.  Would rather have clebo or no one at all before Hay.  He can stay in Auckland and the less heard from him the better.  One of NZ Footballs biggest disappointments

What a lot of people seem to forget, when comparing our players to big stars like Paul Scholes, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard, is that if we had a player anywhere near there caliber or class, they wouldn't stay in the a-league and they wouldn't be here in the first place. If Ferrante had a huge work rate, great passing game and could out shoot Lampard, do you think he would have come anywhere near the phoenix.

Spot on mate, couldn't have said it better. I just got home from work but listened to the game. Ok, we got tonked, sh*t happens. I'm rapt we have Rickji Herbert running the team. It's a learning process for him. last season doesn't count. Ok the defence are not performing as good as they should. I have no doubts they'll be disappointed too.

Thats part of what I love about this club, the coaches and the players actually do care and this isn't a grab the money and run squad, nor is it a retirement home for ex hack british footballers on their last legs and getting a pay out.

The fans care, the players care, the coaches care and the Phoenix administration workers care too. Life is worth living after all, regardless of the results, every weekend I have something to look forward to!

With you on that Lonegunmen Im just glad that Ricky is in charge and not some on the forums after some of the suggestions i have read tonite.
If this keeps up at least i wont have to ask someone to move from my seat  as I have no doubt that as quick as some have jumped on the Phoenix bandwagon they will be just as quick to jump off again.Im staying for the longterm like i hope most of you will be.

Perhaps the Auckland fans could do like those Petone ones with the "Who are ya" tee shirts?

Black Tee shirt with a Yellow Auckland on the front with the phoenix logo and "Who are ya" on the back also in yellow. Isn't how the petone fans have it??

It'd be great if all the different areas had them with their area name on it but the rest of the tee shirt was the same. Shame there's no room left on the Retro Rickis for your place name on it!

Nice to finally see a NZ coach come out and be up front with the press - not a journey or rotation mentioned
I can see Clebo going home and being replaced with a strong aussie or Kiwi defender! Thatw ould be all at this stage I'd think, can't see Ferrante being sent away, he's been good in patches, like the rest of the team.

Ferrante will come right with game time.  I hope he gets the chance to continue playing because he gets himself in some great positions.

The final touch will come to him when his confidence and timing develop.

On the money as usual LG.
There appears to be a weakness in the centre [defence]. The major position in any defence, given the ability of the defender to 'control' both the back and midfield. Granted we had a man down due to yellow card infringements, but I think it is safe to say, that we need to act now rather than later if we are to plug this huge hole.
