I agree with bwtcf. I think Gareth is being very cunning here, but by doing it the way he has he is also taking the calculated risk of pissing a lot of hard core supporters off.

He knows exactly what he's doing

Agree. He knows what he is doing.

He knows that we will huff and we will puff and we will bluster, but we will still turn up this season regardless. And he knows that if the crowd numbers get boosted, we'll be as pleased as he will be. And if the crowd numbers do grow none of us will remember that there were threats. We'll all be too busy cheering the fact that we have great crowd numbers and how vibrant the club is.

If it works, he won't need to do anything to follow up on his threat.

They are. That's exactly what they are doing. They are just trying to stimulate the peripheral/marginal/casual fans into attending. That's good.

My sources tell me that that's working too. BY FAR the biggest pre sales for a Nix game... LOTS of annecdotal evidence that people are planning on going to the game this Sunday.

It couldn't be anything to do with them actually doing some marketing for the game?

. But this seems to be the first option.

It's not the first option.

They have already:

1. Initiated the gate share with local football clubs
2. Rolled out a Black out the Heart promotion
3. Had the summer six ticketing promotion.
4. Had various meet the team events - the last one was at Mojo Waterfront and you could get Nix collector's addition cups.
5. Kids get in free promotion recently...

There's almost certainly other initiatives that I have failed to mention too. They are doing a lot to promote the club.

And it's working.

Put the last game's attendance aside - the weather really was completely ferral, and everyone (including Gareth, publicly) seems to acknowledge what a great effort it was in the circumstances to get nearly 4,000.

Before that the 3 previous Wellington home game attendances were:

  •  6,020 v Perth Glory on 10 December 2011
  •  6,471 v Newcastle Jets on 23 December 2011
  •  8,411 v Sydney FC on 4 January 2012
  •
Trending nicely in the right direction if you ask me.

I also don't think this is the last option either. It's part of a considered multi-pronged effort to grow the crowds here in Wellington.

And apparently the presales for the Heart are the best yet.

Woohoo. I am thrilled by the trends here.

If we get 12,000 to the Heart game what then? Do we all sit back and say "Great, it's working. Whatever it was, keep doing more of that please!"?

All this season. They haven't had a chance to actually work. In fact, it seems by ticketing sales for the upcoming came that they HAVE worked. Which only further proves my point surely.

Okay maybe this was actually a tactic used by Morgan because he had seen the presales of the heart game, and knew we were about to get a big crowd.

So maybe coming out in the media about crowd sizes is going to draw extra attention to the crowd numbers for this coming game, and will end up being huge.

Maybe he is just trying to keep the nix talked about, because maybe the more coverage we are getting, the more likely casual and new supporters will show up?

What Gareth Morgan said, see http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/6305051/Morgan-Fans-demanding-Phoenix-hit-the-road:

"Let's get it in perspective. We're talking about moving one more game. We're not talking any more than that and we would see how that goes."

Next season one home game would definitely be played outside Wellington.

The possibility of a second was being considered, but he was trying to avoid that happening.

"What I'm trying to do here is get the guys to say they don't want to lose even one game," Morgan said.

"Wellington has put a lot into this team. We have a marvellous team here."

Asked if there was any possibility the team could become the New Zealand Phoenix, he said he would "resist that to the end".

Surely we should be thrilled by what he is saying? Get over it people...

I think it proves that doing so was part of a considered, wide ranging set of intitiatives. A set of initiatives that seems to be working.

And it's possible, as I have said before, that he was just being deliberately provocative to stir up the debate and get people off their couches.

This thread threatens to overlaps with the Crowds thread but with regards whether Gareth has done it wrong - how would YOU have done it?

The Club is bleeding money, and we all know how that ended last time. Want to go through that again?

Gareth's has issued a challenge. He's hurtfully frank. But also refreshingly so. In doing so he's sparked discussion about how to get the crowds up such that games DON'T have to be shifted away.

So pray tell me what YOU would have done in Gareth's position?ahmad2012-01-24 15:51:01

It will never get to that amount as the novelty value will wear as thin in other places as it has here. Lets go on the road for 2 but start building a connection to the club for fickle kiwi sports fans.

As covered endlessly here the factors for low attendance can be addressed by:

Combating added costs on Match day, (food, beer, parking, transport, etc)
    Possibly lowering prices
    Better media relations,
Better use of technology and advertising to raise awareness
Increase traditional advertising for matches for comp noobs
Better ticket packages or better awareness of packages that already exist.
    A big-name player
More grass route connections with amateur/youth footy clubs
Some sort of pre-match/half-time stuff that is actually interesting to watch.

    Erm cheerleaders for Junior

(For those that can't be bothered going through all the posts).

If the season ticket is priced accordingly ....I don't have a problem with 2 away home games and a regional round away-as long as the Nix get the money for all those home games.
There's potentially the equivalent of 3-4  RoF games income per away home game possible in Auckland Christchurch and Dunedin, based on our current crowds here.

3 games would be completely taking the piss IMO and I would be expecting a 'Wellington games only' season ticket to made available at a reduced cost if this was to be the case.

Some sort of help for the Wellington fans to get to these games wouldn't go amiss either, i.e. A tie in with Air NZ for some sort of flight package plus a ticket etc.

I'd be happy to see three home games go elsewhere next season. I realize this isn't a popular view but Wellington crowds are poor and it's needed to make the club more financially viable.

Cynical for saying season tickets are well priced? If they take another game or two away and remain the same price they'll not be as well priced? Seems more factual than cynical but you prefer to be cynical about my posts...
