With all the current talk from Gareth about taking more home games to other cities just to make some coin, how many is too many before you start to think about giving up your season membership? For mine, I'm happy with the current one home game away, any more and I'm starting to feel a little unloved.

I'm happy with 1. Unhappy with 2. Any more than 2 may be the tipping point for me.

Just curious, as an out-of-towner. People who say they'll give up their season membership, would you still go to all the games at the ROF?

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

I would say 1 home game is fine, and the FFA regional round could be an extra game as it was this year (the regional round may not be in NZ every year).

I would still get season tickets. I will be going to the games so might as well get a good deal no matter how many games there are.

I can honestly say I don't know. More than 2 would piss me off. Whether I then take action over that I don't actually know.

what if the price didn't change and they offerred a ticket to the away game like the current setup.....for me attending the away/home game is costly and restrictive.

I would like at least one game a year in Auckland, and one elsewhere in the country, but that's where I draw the line. "Wellington Phoenix" it is and must remain. (I think that it should be the "Auckland Warriors" and Breakers, for that matter.)

Not for me to say because I'm not a local but seems a bit drastic to give up on the Club you love for moving a second game out of the city. Sure it sucks but surely the fact that the Club is losing money has to be considered?

If you have a business that you love can you really afford to keep running at a loss? No - you have to make tough decisions and look for ways to keep afloat so that you can keep doing what you love.

Now the Nix and Gareth may be calling a bluff here and lying about the 10K needed to break even. I don't know. Can this be confirmed somehow?

If the figure is right then all the angst over another game lost from Wellington, while understandable, needs to be seen for what it is - a real chance of keeping the Club afloat if local crowds can't pay the bills.

It's not as if Gareth is unhappy with the current profits and wants to make a sh*tload more cash for himself by shifting games away.

Would be too many polls if I was to create it but "will you ditch the Nix if they take a second game on the road?" would be pretty interesting.

The season ticket is always based on games played in Wgtn with games away from Wgtn essentially free if you can get there (region round is different though).

I would assume that in the worst case scenario where there are a few games away from Wgtn they may not want to make the away games free for season ticket holders but probably heavily discounted.

I never thought that would catch on so much

I said it in the other thread but i think it is more relevent here.

The more games played away, the more detatched a supporter becomes from the club. There has to be a point where a supporter becomes completely detatched.

I was going to delete it in the other thread but Jag beat me to it and posted, so now I can't

probably but I think it's appropriate to remind the nix 9 that our team is just that OUR team not a travelling roadshow for them to pawn off to the highest bidder.

As opposed to closing our team down cos no-one goes to see them and there isn't the money coming in to keep them afloat? Just putting it out there!

there are other ways of avoiding closure beofre you start whoring the club off to other centres.

starting with creating a bit of stability within the club, ie a full staff, some marquee players better marketing...not threats on top of the aweful preseason we've just been through

Such as? Isn't that was Gareth is asking us to think about, ways of getting the crowds at the ROF up? If we were gettng 12 or 15K every game, this wouldn't be an issue.

I thought so, don't you think this kind of threat is just a little negative on top of the start we've had, the club need to show the casual supporter that they are here for the long haul before making these threats.

good, at least we agree on that. as a last resort the home away from home games may well be the only answer but give the crowds a chance to repsond to the improvements being made fromt he TS era

Yep, thats what I was saying before. The nix nine haven't even been here a season. SURELY they should be trying to improve things, try some actual initiatives and try to improve crowds themselves before threatening Wellingtonians that their side will be a little less of a wellington side next season.

No. I don't.

As I said previously I think we need to suck it up and get over it. I think Gareth was being deliberately provocative, to get some traction in the media and to shock the public - the casual fans into coming, and the fever into debating, and thinking about ways to help build the crowds.

It's worked. Some fantastic ideas ARE being generated. In fact, by my reading ALL of those things are happening, and no one has taken anything away from us.

So relax.

Gareth wants the club to succeed. He's getting in touch with the fan base directly. How good is that? They are sorting out the staffing of the club. They are resigning key players. Hell, the team's even winning and up to third on the table! Boom shanka!

Surely not everything that is said and done is going to please everyone? It's okay. Gareth has publicly said he is targetting increasing the marginal/peripheral fans. That's fantastic! That's exactly who needs to be targetted.

We've seen Gareth in the Fever zone, at Westpac and in Dunedin. With his shirt off. He's not gonna piss in our weaving hut unless he absolutely has to. And he's miles away from absolutely having to.

It's ALL good.

I never said otherwise! I said on the other thread, and I've always said, the Wellington Phoenix should play in Wellington. As far as I'm concerned, all the home games should be at the ROF.

A successful season on the park this year and a season of consolidation and improvement on and of the park next season should be the first priority.

Was only asking the questions.

I agree with bwtcf. I think Gareth is being very cunning here, but by doing it the way he has he is also taking the calculated risk of pissing a lot of hard core supporters off.

They are. That's exactly what they are doing. They are just trying to stimulate the peripheral/marginal/casual fans into attending. That's good.

My sources tell me that that's working too. BY FAR the biggest pre sales for a Nix game... LOTS of annecdotal evidence that people are planning on going to the game this Sunday.

targetting periphial fans by threatening them? if you were one of those and the club said if you don't come we'll take games elsewhere would it make you turn up? Hell if I was in that group I'd be like "whatever, I don;'t actually care, you won't be in the a-league in two seasons anyway". Until the club can show the casual fan that they are a real team/club and are here for the long term they'll not get any buy in. Simple. Nix 9 need to fix the issues from last season, ie staff, then squad, then work on the rest of the small issues. As yet they haven't solved anyof them, they are "working on it"

I do see a case for taking a game away to recoup some money if need be. But I think the primary focus should be on increasing crowds here in Wellington. Taking too many games away is without a doubt counter-productive to that goal.

I think he has gone about it backward by threatening the fans. They are very new to the club, and they haven't even tried to increase crowds before pulling out such a threat.  If they'd tried everything under the sun to increase crowds here, and it still hadn't worked, maybe I'd be more understanding. But this seems to be the first option.
