Smeltz is a quality finisher no doubt but in my mind he never achieved hero status like Ifill has. Smeltz was good for us.. Ifill pretty much is us. The man has played in an FA cup final he's just a class above.

Agree with the first bit but disagree with the last. Smeltz did much better tracking back than Ifill has done. Greenie does all of the defending from the front in our team.
Ifill shouldn't have to do the defensive work, though, that isn't what he's there for

To be quite honest I think Ifill is by far a better player than Smeltz. In fact if I was Ricki, the form of Smeltz in the last 5 weeks has been crap, and for the AW I would have him on the bench.

I've also discovered Ifill is only 29. Err...scrub that theory. Let's just say I'm happy that we do have Smeltz, and think threads saying how much we'd prefer to have a Barbadan international aren't particularly productive.

I'd rather have Ifill. Easily. He's soo creative and amazing. More talented than Smeltz. His touch, and ability to beat players is better than what Smeltz has. If Ifill was a New Zealander, I'd have him in the All Whites ahead of Smeltz if it came down to it (although I know they play different posittions). If there were two players of a roughly equivalent level I'd far prefer the New Zealander. Colvinator2010-02-21 23:56:59

Different styles here guys. My hearts saying Smeltz but my heads saying Ifill. I also stand by the 'if its not broken, dont fix it' philosophy. Ifill's definitely not broken, so its going to be hard for anyone to say they would rather someone else in the squad.
But what I do think is that they would complement each other well if they were ever to play alongside each other. Smeltz on the end of one of those Ifill crosses that we've been seeing weekly, you would have the best attacking duo in the competition. And with Greenacre in the mix as well... I drool at the prospect.

I don't understand how Smeltz scores so often. He doesn't have amazing pace, tricky moves, height, muscle or anything. I think he manages through positioning and heading ability.
Ifill has tricks, heading ability, positioning, pace (at times) etc. All round a better player.
