Imports - Did we get it quite wrong in the past?

So I was sitting there last night and I went "Is this the best import combo we have ever had?"

So I sat down this morning and came up with this:

07/08 Daniel, Felipe, Cleberson (3g), George (4g)
08/09 Daniel, Gao (8g), Fred (3g)
09/10 Daniel, Ifill, Greenacre, Diego, Chiang, Dadi (came in for Chiang when loan expired)
10/11 Daniel, Ifill, Greenacre, Diego, Toto
11/12 Ifill, Greenacre, Sanchez, Smith, Warner (Daniel naturalised)
12/13 Ifill, Sanchez, Smith, Stein, Totori
13/14 Ifill, Stein, Carlos, Cunningham, Riera

I think its fair to say that this year would appear to be the best we have gotten from our 5 imports slot.

Anyone elses thoughts?

Even firing on only four cylinders, it's the best.  Daniel, Ifill, Greenacre, Dadi; 2nd, and very entertaining.

Except for penalty kicks.
But did provide a memorable man-love moment at Midlands Park with Ma'a Nonu (mutual dreads appreciation).

Now it is the best combo I think.  Carlos, Kenny and to a lesser extent Reira have all taken time to adjust and slot in.

(refer to angsty posts about Carlos and Kenny drifting in and out of the games)

I think Ernie's surprised us all. Early on it was very easy to say that Carlos was past it, Kenny was a dud and Reira was "the biggest waste of an import slot ever", and to whine about why we didn't have a gun striker or a fullback instead of midfielder upon midfielder. I said at least one of those things myself.

Spurred on by Doloras' example of manfully owning up, i am also acknowledging I was too impatient with Carlos and Kenny early on.
Riera on the other hand showed early promise right away, even if he was not as prominent then (possibly working out his understanding on the pitch with Lia). May his groin heal fast.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

I don't want to cause any angst, but I never had a bad word to say about any of them. The two costa Ricans in fact, I backed to the hilt

You cannot go past Daniel, Cleberson, George, Felipe - I would have all of them back in a heart beat.  So many LOLs

I still giggle when I think of going down to watch one of the early training sessions at the Stadium (before the first game had been played). A group of the players were standing round in a circle playing keepie-uppie, and everytime the ball went to George he would manage about 2 juggles before he would accidently hit it about 30 yards away.

I don't know what people are expecting out of import slots?

Theoretically, they should be the best or near to being the best players in the team.

Nail. Hit. On. Head.

Compare with last year when at times we had just the one or possibly even no imports starting.

Of the Nix's 30 goals this season, Waffles, Carlos and Kenny have scored 21.

Admittedly I was getting very annoyed with Carlos at one point.

Cancelled out by saying Riera was good from the start though.

Doubt that he would be starting but would be ahead of Leo as an impact player.  Will he ever play for the AWs?

No. Far too old.

If Daniel was ever to be an AW he wouldve already played by now. Actually surprised he never featured in the OFC Nations Cup, plenty of scraping the bottom of the barrel for players throughout that period. I dont think Daniel departed the Nix on the best of terms though, could be why Ricki never called him up.

I got to know Daniel on a personal level. Met his father etc. He is now playing in the Thai League as an AM, last season he scired over 10 goals and was enjoying himself.

That's great, he will always be remembered fondly I think. A club legend and fan favourite.

Great guy and all and yes a fan favourite, great with kids and fans etc but imo, abilities never really matched the hype, and quite probably the wages bill. Was that to do with the style we were playing when he was here? Quite probably.

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Search Daniel Lins Cortes. Theres an excellent 8 minute clip on him from 2013. Still doing the pin point crosses and scoring.

Wow, the offside call at 2:05. Even the A-league linos aren't that bad (most of the time).

Now I feel nostalgic! Can we have him back on loan/guest? I miss Daniel... He should get an All Whites call up just for old times sake, we don't have that many decent midfielders...

I maybe wrong but from my slight following of the Thai League I believe Daniel is no longer playing in Thailand.
