In a slow football week, the pod interviews Phoenix General Manager David Dome to talk recruitment, preseason and away trips. Elsewhere, Kiwis are back in action in overseas' leagues and Sky counters Coliseum. While in local football action, Miramar Rangers have one hand on the Central League title and Wellington United are looking likely for a triple relegation.

I know a week late. The NYL is the best league in Aus for youth players. AIS team (which does play in the NYL) is made up of very young players that at 17 or 18 some get picked up by NYL teams (some very talented get pro contracts). I think the NYL players can play in the winter for state league sides.

Hey Bullion, ongoing discussion re Nix Academy/Football School of Excellence etc going on over on FSE thread. Nix in NYL would be ideal, but cost makes it unlikely.

Kotahitanga. We are one.

This week on In The Zone, New Zealand Football comes to the rescue as the Wellington Phoenix FC find a new opponent for their preseason fixture in Rotorua, while Cameron Lindsay looks to be heading out the door. In other All Whites news, tickets to the World Cup Qualifier are flying out the door, but will it last? Locally, Wellington United are home to the double down, and the Central League title contenders face off this weekend.

Michael Fitzgerald is contracted to the current club his playing at(Albirex Niigata), and has been since '08 according to Wiki and Transfermarkt and had been loaned out to other clubs in previous seasons - not the other way round as reported.

Just listening and heard references to Gould and Calcott not getting on.  Is it fair to say that Gouldie's youth team stuff might be scaled back and he'll go back to concentrating on GK's now?  That group (FSE last year) was his baby wasn't it and they've pretty much all been cut loose.

On Spoonley - I think I read that he's going to be training with the Phoenix as well as playing for TW

All accurate. I feel a bit for Gouldy.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

What is it about Gouldie's recruitment that no other coach likes? Most of the FSE being cut loose reminds me a lot of the James Musa situation and lets not forget Gouldy took Thomas Biss over to Perth for a wee training/trial period.

What's his batting average though? It's all good and well to feel for the guy but if his choices are crap, then the decisions to cast them off are correct (not saying they were, just hypothetical). If I understand it that Gould was signed primarily as a GK coach first, then that's his job and the rest is gravy. As Ernie is showing, we are a professional football side and sentiment largely plays no part. Last year might have been great for Gould with all his extras but it was poor for Calcott. In the end, Calcott runs TW where these kids will play, not Gould so whom should really be more hands on with them? That's the key question.

Ok Musa kicked on. That's one.. Biss has really yet take that step up... Any others?

Debatable whether Musa kicked on.
I just think the guy is a gem of a bloke and I feel a wee bit for him in the current circumstances.
Sentiment plays a part in football as much as it does in any occupation. Gouldy is a top man with a genuine passion for providing young players with opportunities. That gives him points on the board in my book.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

I don't deny anything you say there Smithy.

I can understand that Gould might well be peeved but fundamentally, if these are to be Calcotts kids, who should be responsible for them? Sorry, but its not Gould whether you feel for him or not.

This week the pod covers the latest Wellington Phoenix FC news, including a tasty preseason fixture against Auckland City Football Club, Matt Thompson on trial, and a third away-home game for Eden Park. In Kiwi football news, Winston Reid is mocked by a Fairfax journalist, and the host cities for the FIFA U-20 World Cup New Zealand 2015 are announced. While locally, it's Chatham Cup weekend so the pod dials in the coaches of Wellington Olympic AFC and Cashmere Technical .

Can I just say that I quite enjoyed that podcast, despite a dearth of material.

I thought Boxy's attempt at moderating was good but could have been improved if it had been preceded by a "Jesus wept, is the whole podcast going to be like this?"

Whangarei getting a game is "quite nice" but New Plymouth is "depressing"... interesting. I guess in footballing terms I can see what you mean, but as far as cities go, I wouldn't put that much of a difference between them

Yeah that was a weird call. McLean Park isn't up to Fifa standards and Nelson City Council withdrew their bid so STFU I say. Wouldn't call either depressing either. I think living in Tawa or Lower Hutt etc far more depressing guys

I'm very dubious about Whanagrei's footballing credentials, they have one team who I'm told play on a less-than-glamorous pitch, the facilities there must be rather good, or have promised an upgrade. Certainly the city is well... not a tourist destination....

Err but Tawa ad LH are suburbs with close access to bigger/better cities. New Plymouth is a city. And a painfully boring one at that.

Stadium up there is fantastic. It's only a few years old much like the one in New Plymouth. Not the greatest City but NZ really is far behind the rest of the world stadium wise. Would like to see other cities go for a Waikato Stadium which is the perfect stadium for Rugby/Football. Napier, Nelson & Palmerston North really need an upgrade to catch up to the rest of the other centres IMO

I always liked it there. Womad, the surf, arts scene, skiing (albeit not as good as others). Whangarei I would call boring but certainly not depressing considering what's within 15/20km of it etc. You're from Wellington I take it so you probably find other smaller centres boring like most who grew up in bigger cities.

Taller than Dura and Siggy. I think he had a slight build when he last played for the All Whites, not short anyway.

Nelson City Council decided to focus on cricket world cup and ended up doing very well out of it, getting three games including a West Indies clash. West Indies will also play New Zealand this summer, so in an overall view, Nelson probably did better focussing on that.

If Nelson wants to be taken seriously in football circles it needs to re-name itself Nelsen.

In the latest episode of In The Zone, the pod looks back at Wellington Phoenix FC's preseason trip to NSW and ponders who will claim the final squad spots now that Ernie Merrick has passed on Matt Thompson. In Kiwi football news, Ricki Herbert rolls back the clock in naming his squad for the All Whites' trip to Saudi Arabia, and the Young All Whites are asked to pay to represent their country. And in local football, the finalist of the Chatham Cupare found after two comprehensive victories in the semi finals.
