I've heard a lot of rumours linking Leo with the Phoenix and if he signed with us at the beginning of the season I would have agreed... but with Daniel, Felipe, Elrich and Ferrante I don't think he'd make the grade any more.

Definetly would. Plus, he's kiwi. He's being used as a bench player in perth so being a bench player here wouldnt be a step down. IMO hes worthy of a startin position, maybe even as a partner to Smeltz

Even not, I'd love to give him the chance. But seeing him in action against Vanuatu, I'd say yes.

When Perth got stuffed at the Stadium Leo was head and shoulders above any of the other Perth rabble.  He looks the goods.

Leo has been one of the stand outs in a side thats struggled at times. He consistently plays well and would be a useful addition to the squad.

I feel that he would start over Ferrante and Lia

Bertos is perhaps the best player in a pretty average side. He'd be even better if (hopefully when) he comes to the Nix.

also he can play on the left, which gives us another genuine option to having daniel there.

he can beat a man one-on-one with pace which I think we lack a little

Lia and Bertos are really different kinds of players so it's not fair to compare them, but personally I'd have Bertos over Lia any day.

probali start bertos at striker with smeltz

I wouldn't start Bertos, but he would give us depth

Bertos on one wing, Daniel on the other and Smeltz in the centre - I reckon that would work

and Elrich and Felipe?

Also, Bertos and Ferrante are as good as each other when it comes to shooting...

Bertos isnt a striker hes a left attacking midfielder with great distribution skills but about as prolific in fronf of goal as ferrante

I'd love to see him at the nix, because as J Dean said - he can beat people, but, not sure whose place he would  take..  Plus, I think Ferrante is becoming more integral to the squad with his passing game so it would be hard to have to drop someone. would be great for squad depth though.

Our problem is that we lack legit strikers outside of Smeltz and that outside of Dodd and perhaps Rees, we're lacking legit defenders.

That said, I'd love it if Leo joined our team.

Bertos would be a good fit into the squad as he provides us with a different kind of player.  At that Vanawatu game he was taking the piss, it took me a few replays to work out how he was beating his defenders.  At the moment the only player close to Leo on ablility to beat players one on one is Felipe.  Leo also seems to play very well under Ricky, I remember he was possibly our best player against Brazil last year.
Only problems are, his finishing seems to let him down at times and we can't load up on to many All whites as it leaves the squad a bit thin when they are on duty.

I'm pretty sure he's not just a laeft mid-fielder.

He'd be just as potent on the right and he can play up front too. He played up front against Vanuatu and was superb so obviously Ricki thinks he can play there

Yeah, i dont see him just as a left sided player and in the perth/phoenix game at the RoF he switched flanks throughout the game. He would give Daniel a run for his money on the left and if Elrich is not around would be a shoe in on the right. Has pace to stretch the defence and break quickly, only 2 things his final delivery is not always spot on and his finishing is not great but would be a great asset to the club.

Yeah, he is effective enough to make up for that

He's a great player. Would take him in a heartbeat. Had the most assists last year didn't he?

Definite Yes, pace and the ability to beat a man is hard to find

Last match aside, Lochhead is quality, one of our best players IMO

So Rees has replaced the vacant Cleberson spot, Couldn't Bertos take George's?? He'd certainly give Ricki plenty of permutations and varience if we keep the current squad.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

I think Lochhead is pretty terrible in a back 3 but good in a back 4 where he can push forward more.

I wouldn't say he is terrible but a back 3 certainly doesn't suit him. If we have 3 at the back he should be starting at left wing back.

Leo has very good ball skills and a lot of pace. The sort of player who needs to be managed properly to get the best out of him. Look at Ferrante, great distribution, but put him too close to goal, and fans take the piss cos he can't score. That's a shame. Leo could be devastating out wide for us. Look at the impact of the young fellas out on the flanks for the Roar. I think Leo provides the same kind of thing.

bertos is only coming off the bench as he has gone out of favour after expressing his wishes to come to the nix

R u kidding!!!! Bertos would compliment the squad, he is great. Would love to see him and Smeltz up front each match, they can play off each other so well.

Would welcome Bertos into the team with open arms next season. However on the 7th there will be no welcome passing these lips.

I vote for Bertos too. I love the way he runs at defences, something we don't see enough of with the Phoenix at the moment. Also, he's a highly motivated player anyway but I reckon he would give his absolute all for his true home team in front of a true home crowd.

However it's all conjecture. Does anyone know if he's been even vaguely approached? (Come on Leo's family and friends, 'fess up!)

Bertos is quality but come on, we really need some more clinical finishers in the squad and looking at his record in that department its what we are lacking. I''d like some more goals from all over the park but particulary in midfield. Too many setting up chiefs and not enough goal scoring Indians I guess, when what we need is a mixture of both. Hm, maybe not the best metaphor to use there. But yeah. More prolific finishers all over the park first please!

How about Gaizka Mendieta? He's only playing reserve matches for boro! :D

After tonight's game, do you think he could have changed the outcome?

His crosses would have been more dangerous than Elrich's (Bertos actually gets in behind his marker), and provided we had men there to meet them, then yes.

And as for the thin squad when the AW are away, the FFA has said that from next year there will be no matches on weekends the national teams are playing. Though that still raises a question over fatigue if they have a mid-week game.
