With Jiang Chen now gone, he'll go down in history as one of the least impressive Phoenix players of all time. He clearly wasn't up to it, and while you have to feel for the lad with the language barriers and cultural differences he faced, he unfortunately wasn't a very good football player.
To be honest, even George (up until now, most people's choice as the least impressive Phoenix player ever) was more influential than poor old "Johnny" Chen. George even played his part in a goal a minute into his debut against Adelaide, if only by virtue of being in close proximity to the ball as it flew in off Smeltz against Adelaide in round five of the 2007/08 season. His jubilant celebrations and wide-armed, grinning run towards the bench even had some people thinking he'd actually scored himself. He hadn't. Other than that, he was very, very ordinary....but still better than Chen....he even played 49 minutes in one match.
The stats...
George - 4 appearances (all as sub) - total minutes on the pitch: 72. No goals. No yellow cards.
Jiang Chen - 2 appearances (both as sub) - total minutes on the pitch: 26. No goals. 1 yellow card.
One thing Chen can claim over George is that he never featured in a losing Phoenix side - his two appearances were in the 1-1 draw with NQF and the 6-0 win over GCU.

In the World League of Awesomeness, George is the undisputed leader, Chen is the second in command, and will remain in the hearts of all forever.

George had a personality too. Who can forget his wide smile and double thumbs up.

Careful 'Pool 1 - that entry almost takes 'Johnny' past the conventional lenth of a footnote.

George was the best player to ever put on a Phoenix shirt. To compare him to Chen is heresy.

eitherway they were both a waste of space, having said that, if the nix had a reserve(youth) team in the a-league or a nz comp chen would have been more match fit for the games he got to play and probably would have made a better showing than he did.

I disagree. His sulking and tantrums suggested otherwise. He should have been training at les mills instead of getting sponsorship from elrichs pieshop.rojas, so special

He tried hard at practices that I have been to. Just not physically up for the challenge. Seems a lot of the chinese players come across as a bit light weight and easily pushed off the ball. G** was the same in that respect. Lonegunmen2009-12-30 11:50:31

Have been loathe to enter this pointless debate but I suppose it was inevitable.
BBS - if you have any more observations than the rest of us re more than the 26 minutes on field then please share with us (otherwise STFU). LG has provided some training observations.

A good topic and as any politician already would knows a great example of Statistics being used to quantify whatever point you want them to.

Georges celebration after not scoring was priceless.....imagine what he would have done if he had banged in a screamer himself. No one in the stadium would have been safe!!!!

I remember George getting bowled over by an angry Liam Reddy, or one of the keepers. We were losing 2 - nil and scored at 90mins. The keeper was angry at not keeping a clean sheet and took his frustrations out on George but giving him the big no argue. The clips on youtube, i'll find it.

This was in the home game against Adelaide in season 1, when Smeltzy scored for 2-2 with about 2 to go in the game.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PIsk0Y-4JI At the end. George thought he scored it.

To be fair to George, he didn't see Smeltz header cos it was behind him. So he probably thought his pressure on the keeper led to a OG.

That goal was actually pretty flukey. It's not often you see a keeper punch the ball straight onto the striker's head and then it rebounds into the goal...
