I was also looking at Sydney's scoring and basically we needed one other decent striker. They had Brosque and Bobo. We had Krishna and no one.

Smeltz didn't live up to his previous scoring rates with us. Watson lost his nose for goal a little. Kosta isn't a traditional striker, he's more of a wide player (and yes I know about his days at the Roar). Finkler, Mikey and Roly aren't in the team to be strikers and all were off form in front of goal or injured.

In terms of goal scoring- Sydney had two strikers and two mids. We had one striker and three mids. Our midfields scored equal numbers (though again a tale of two seasons).

Sydney:

Bobo: 15  Brosque: 11                                                 Ninkovic: 9 Holosko: 7

Phoenix:

Krishna: 12 (Smeltz: 3 Watson: 2)                                     Finkler: 6 Kosta: 5  Roly : 4

All Ernie's doing.  Not a striker was his game plan.  A pity, because otherwise he was a breath of fresh air.

But the way I see it, if you play a bona fide central striker with Krishna and Kosta, then the middle three and FBs needed to be a fair bit more mobile, experienced and defensively organised than we were.  We had trouble in the three areas that everyone talked about pre-season; striker, DM and FB.

I think Ernie's theory was that finding a good A-League level striker was very difficult; and that it was easier to find a player who had the attributes to be a good striker and try to mold them into one.

It worked with Burns, so I don't blame him for continuing down that path.

was it Ernie or owners saying we are not paying that much forcing his hand?

Over 29 games this season, Sydney only spent 211 minutes trailing

Our winning percentage was high- so we felt quite good for quite a significant part of this season. But out losing percentage is also quite high.

Really shows we are really poor in parts of games and concede a few goals in a small space of time. With that winning percentage we should have won more games than we did.
