I can see a fight to death (figuratively speaking) between Adelaide, Jamtards and us for the fourth spot.

Looks like it will be up and down like a yo-yo on the standings table, for the above three clubs, all the way to the finish line, while Sydney, Victory and Perth all seem to be safe bet to remain in the top four already.

bottom 3 getting more and more clear. Can't see any of them making a run for the 6 now, Newcastle almost out of it too. We nee at least a point from tonight's game to stay in the battle with Adelaide.

Not sure if it's my Wellington bias, but it definitely feels like there's a gulf between the top 6 & bottom 4 this season, compared with previous seasons. It really feels like if a top 6 team plays a bottom 4 team, the outcome is more predictable than usual. (I think a recent surge in successful tips in RR's tipping might support this)

As I said, this could be influenced by many seasons of the Phoenix looking up at the top 6, and me (& Nix fans) thinking, "Well, we're still only one or two wins off the playoffs..."

I don't think it's bias, I'm pretty sure that we haven't seen this kind of gap between the top 6 and the rest, at this stage of the season, for a very long time.

Evidence from 10 team seasons. Interestingly, Perth overturned a 7 point gap in 15/16 and made the 6 by 13 points after they gained 27 points in their last 11 games and Sydney only gained 7.

There was nothing savant about that chant, quite the opposite.

Still frustrating to me that we're in the bottom half.  I guess we are better placed this season to win a playoff game away from home but would love a home semi

That's us paying for a slow start. Our form is as good or better than most of the teams in front of us so we have every chance of climbing a few places with eleven rounds to go.

Yeah despite Rudans up beat comments you wont convince me that the players with families are going to be rapt with the next few weeks of away games.

man we were unlucky with some results this week going against us, ie, City winning it at the death mid week and CCM not being able to hold on v Adelaide.

It's annoying to think that if Taylor hadn't missed that shot against Roar and that red card wasn't shown against Lowry we'd be reasonably comfortable sitting 4th and biting at Sydney's heels

Indeed, annoyingly, that's football. We as fans love a "what if" or "if only" scenario.  Doesn't make it any less frustrating mind!

26 points after 16 games would have had us 3rd in the 17/18, 16/17, 11/12 seasons, 4th in the 14/15, 13/14, and 12/13 seasons. and 6th in the 15/16 season.

Highlights how much of a gulf there is atm.

Reading today's The Australian, Greg O'Rourke at FFA is a bit worried about the gulf now between top 6, and bottom 4.

Meaning with 11 rounds still to go, there is going to be a number of potentially meaningless fixtures involving the bottom 3 teams. He hasn't given up on Newcastle just yet, but obviously a host of nothing games is not great for the sport. Wonder if it will play some part in discussions about creating a 2nd division, and possible pro/rel.

He also had some nice things to say about 'feelgood revival' of the Nix.

The other side of the coin is, it's only because of a poor performing bottom 4 that we have this many points. If the league was more even, it maybe could be we'd be a bit higher, but also completely possible we may still be 6th, or worse. The win vs City was only our 2nd win vs a current top 6 side.

Everyone is looking at the bottom four but ignoring that this is the closest top six we have had for awhile. 11 points between 1st and 6th is the second lowest difference after 16 rounds since WSW joined, only one lower was when Adelaide came from last to win it (7 points).

We have 3 teams chasing the Premiership and 3 teams that will be very competitive when the finals roll around.

The win was only our second vs top 6.. But overall we have 2 wins, 4 draws and 3 losses, and 2 of the losses came back when we had that shark period of losing 3 games. From the start of the streak to now, we have 2 wins, 4 draws and 1 loss vs Top 6.

Change in form, but probably for WSW rather than Newcastle.

Even Ridenton managed to score instead of just being the scapegoat.
