I would correlate passing the ball with consistently being top of the table and ACL. Strange how that works....   I wonder what would happen if we tried that rather than kicking it back to the opposition keeper...

We all hope we manage to get there of course but hey, so far this seasons table has looked a lot better for us overall. I'm rapt that we are giving a better showing tablewise.

Nicely coded table (which doesn't like quote tags).

Sums up pretty obviously that we HAVE to win tonight, and as mentioned Adelaide has to beat Queensland (when is that "catch up" game?). Good thing that we play Sydney and CCM and QLD play each other next week, any result is good for us in that one. ScoobyD2009-01-04 18:09:55

Good News with that win tonight We CANT come LAST so now its all up from last year. So at least a New Zealand team has done better than 8th

The table is an interesting read
No team is in the negative loss territory i.e. In minimum half their games they have a result/points. Newcastle at the bottom has 9 results and 9 losses. This has to be the closest league table in any sport anywhere.

there's lots of places this season we could have picked up points, but there's no point counting them now. Only points that matter are the next nine.

In the old NSL you could finish much lower than 8th.

I do think in the first year of the NSL we finished 9th out of 16...

Might need an old hand to confirm

EDIT From Wikipedia

The Football Kingz F.C. joined the Australian National Soccer League in 1999 and proceeded to play in the last 5 seasons of the NSL. They were placed 8th of 16 in the 1999-2000 season, 8th of 14 in 2000-01, 13th of 13 in 2001-02, 11th of 13 in 2002-03 and 13th of 13 in 2003-04.

remember the NSL was probably slightly easier since more teams lead to players being spread out.

Wasn't trying to illustrate that vs current form, more that we have finished mid table once before. I think Wellingtons effort has been far more impressive.

I have to admit that I am merely quoting what one of the commentators said during an away game a couple of weeks ago. I think it was Harper, though I'm not sure, who was talking us up and saying that our finish this season would be something to be proud of given that we'd be the first NZ club to finish higher than 8th.

??We are the only NZ soccer club in the A-league at the moment and the previous competitions had more than 8 teams. Also, if you considered Basketball and League (who both have only one NZ club in an Australian competition), they both have placed higher than 8th and have been in play-offs.

Previously the best soccer placement is the Football Kingz being 8th out of 16 teams which is just above the midpoint of the table. So until we actually nab 4th position out of the 8 teams, we can't really claim to be on equal terms with the Kingz's first season.

Anyway, wasn't Harper being just "cheeky" rather than "talking us up"? I am sure that the Warriors and the Breakers still have a better winning form than us yet although it took them a number of seasons to get it.

Very true Jag, we have to focus on what we can control -  and whilst its a cliche play one game at a time - pretty much what Ricki has been saying a lot of late. Beat Sydney is next ion the list, the rest cfan take care of themselves.

For my money - on current form there are only really 3 teams with a chance of winning - Adelaide, the Tards and as a dark horse CCM.

I would add the Meow on there if uncle Frank could get his selections right. Wellington - well they are putting their best foot forward but I just cant see them pipping the Tards or Adelaide.



IMHO they are right. We have had wonderful form and excellent results at the end of this season but it's going to be extremely difficult to get us into finals football. Our last showing against Laid is going to haunt us for a while.

But we can beat the Tard, even at home. It will be difficult but hey...

is it still possible for us to pull 2nd or even first place if some teams really really have a bad few weeks and we seem to have a stunning last 3 rounds

To be fair I am happy with the Tards Barrel boys result because they'll want to beat the Clogs to make use of that game in hand advantage to stay top.

The problem with that clarke..is that someone above us has to pick up some sort of points. So is very very unlikely for us to get second,and very very very unlikely for us to get first...in fact impossible i believe

imo we'll win against Sydney but lose to Adelaide and Melb. We don't have a chance in hell against Melbourne at home playing the way we do. Maybe if they play 3 strikers up front again..

Dunno.According to the commentator last night, Adelaide's away form hasn't been that flash. Once we take care of Sydney, it'll be all on at the ROF against them. I reckon we can take them at our place.

The game against Adelaide could very well be the a great chance for us to steal some point of them. They'll be tired - playing 7 games in 30ish days, ours will be their 5th (I think), their away form hasn't been great....If we can steal a point with the draw or by some miracle win it, we might have a chance at top four - providing we beat Sydney of course/.
