Epic Fail on the Nix site for the A-League ladder - they've got the points right, but all the team names are buggered:
http://www.wellingtonphoenix.com/default.aspx?s=aleague_ladder

Ex-Knights fan in the IT div maybe a little envious?
Or have they decided that Auckland should win their berth back over the Glolry?

our goal difference might prove crucial in terms of making the top four

we've got a while to sort it out, having said that we have started to pick up points by grinding out results and i can't see Ricki and Brian T throwing caution to the wind anytime soon

(and good to see the jets in more 'debt' than us)

I'd feel much more comfortable if we were more than 2 points clear of Perth. Adelaide were playing in Uzbekistan this week and it takes like a million hours to get back. That and Perth's success last week, this is their best chance of passing us IMO. I've actually tipped them to win, just like I did last week. Hmm.

true, perth seem to have found a stuttering kind of form

and adelaide , as well as  traveling might be a bit under-foussed after the OCL success

i expect us to get at least a point, but  perth are nowhere near wooden spooners yet

Draw or a win will put us in 5th. Unless we smash them 9-0 and them we go 4th

And even if we win 100-0 we will still only get 3 points.

Anyone have any idea why draws are worth 1 point rather than 1.5 points?
Permalink Permalink
over 17 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
So that two draws don't equal a win?

Permalink Permalink
over 17 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
So its better to go for a win, and a win and a loss is better than pissing round for two draws.

1.5 points? Decimals in the points system?! Your question is more appropriately phrased as why is a win worth 3 instead of 2 points. With all due respect then, I'm guessing you're quite young. It used to be 2 points for a win. It was changed to 3 points for a win from the 1980/81 season on. It was then adopted for international tournaments from the 1984 Euros Final tournament.

The trouble with 2 points for a win is that teams who were drawing were not necessarily given sufficient incentive to risk their point and go for the win. With both teams not necessarily seeing sufficient reward for risking their point, games that were being drawn late on could become low in action.

3 points for a win means you can gain 2 by only risking 1, so teams are more likely to go for it. The system doesn't necessarily reduce draws, but it does tend to mean teams are more likely to be attack-minded late in matches.

Despite the fact QLD could break in if they win today, I think its fair to say that the top four is finally looking a little bit settled? The teams in the top 4 can be clearly identified as playing better than the bottom 4 IMO.

So we want queensland and the Jets to draw...

Then if we win tonight,we're only 2 points outside the top 4,and in 6th place

Allegedly

Exactly, and a win by a few goals would be nice for that goal difference.
