Perth glory has released captain simon colosimo and midfielder Leo Bertos after ceasing contract negotiations today...
The decision was made following lengthy discussions between
Glory Coach Dave Mitchell and the
players agent in Sydney
today.
It is believed that Bertos will return home to Wellington, New
Zealand, where he is expected to join the Phoenix while
Colosimos immediate
playing future is unknown.
Bertos joined Perth in 2006 and played 35 matches in two
seasons.

Leave the stats to Nightz - we have already established on the forum that stats dont tell the whole picture. I believe he has been top assister in the league before anyway. Just because it may not be working perfectly with one club - does not mean it wont with another. Ask Shane Smeltz

To quote an esteemed veteran of this forum: "You, sir, are an idiot".
I'd have thought it's pretty clear already. Firstly, you bag a guy who's been the best and most consistent NZ player in the A-league over the last two seasons, and then suggest that we could sign a better player than him. What, you're expecting us to sign Leo Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo?el grapadura2008-01-23 09:49:44

Get your facts straight before you start typing.
1) Bertos is not being released - he's off contract, and as the statement clearly says, the negotiations on renewal have failed, largely, I would suspect, because Leo would love to be playing at home for a club that has better looking future than Perth.
2) NZ players are not classed as foreigners only at the Phoenix - for every other A-league club, NZ players are classed in the same way as the boys from Brazil, Costa Rica and Korea.
3) Bertos is not a striker, so calling him a one-goal wonder is either ignorant or just plain petty. He has pace, very good technique, and on evidence of AW games, links up with Smeltz superbly. Whoever doesn't want a pleyer like that at his/her club is, as I've posted earlier, an idiot.el grapadura2008-01-23 10:57:25
Wow, finishing 7th is a great achievement? For a club that, alongside Adelaide, had the greatest continuity coming into the A-league?
The reality is that Perth are crap - they couldn't buy a goal in the first few weeks of the season, having strikers like Dragicevic who couldn't score with a 5 dollar hooker in Vivian St and Robinson who couldn't hit a barn from two yards out. It seems fairly clear that players like Colossimo and Bertos, both of whom are rated highly in A-league terms by pretty much everyone other than you, are looking to leave a ship that's going nowhere in particular at the moment.
Am I glad you're not in charge of signings.
He links up with Smeltz well and last season he set up more goals than anyone else in the league, I'd think the reason he didn't set many up this year was because Perth couldn't buy a goal for most of the season. In fact, did he set up that goal at the RoF?
