Perth glory has released captain simon colosimo and midfielder Leo Bertos after ceasing  contract negotiations today...

The decision was made following lengthy discussions between Glory Coach Dave Mitchell and the players agent in Sydney today.

It is believed that Bertos will return home to Wellington, New Zealand, where he is expected to join the Phoenix while Colosimos immediate playing future is unknown.

Bertos joined Perth in 2006 and played 35 matches in two seasons.

he's all yours.....

I have only one reservation with the possible signing of Leo Bertos, and for that matter other Kiwis.

When the National team plays, the Phoenix could lose out, no one single Aussie A-League team
will have the same problem to the same extent.

Though for this coming season we should be OK.

Leave the stats to Nightz - we have already established on the forum that stats dont tell the whole picture. I believe he has been top assister in the league before anyway. Just because it may not be working perfectly with one club - does not mean it wont with another. Ask Shane Smeltz

I'd have thought it's pretty clear already. Firstly, you bag a guy who's been the best and most consistent NZ player in the A-league over the last two seasons, and then suggest that we could sign a better player than him. What, you're expecting us to sign Leo Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo?el grapadura2008-01-23 09:49:44

Leo is an awesome player with a great workrate. He's been one of the standouts in his games for the All Whites and he would be a great addition to the Phoenix. If he is signing, it will be interesting to see who the Nix start on the left and right of midfield. There's a bit of competition there, especially if Elrich is retained. Daniel would have to start if fit and Lia, Elrich and Bertos would fight hard for that final spot. I'd be surprised if we kept Elrich if Bertos was signed. Neither of them would be happy with being on the bench and they both deserve to start in whatever team they are playing for.

if one is so good why is he being released?? wats up with the Phoenix picking up not wanted players from other clubs. this is bullocks sure hes from nz but the rule says you can get players for NZ AND AUS who will not be classed as your overseas players. instead of picking up secound string pieces of crap like a one goal wonder (bertos) lets chase some half decent aussie players and build a club.

these second string players are crap. nz football is crap even if he is nzs best player in the league hes still sh*t.

Bob,
Just because Perth are releasing Leo doesn't mean he's sh*te, he could well have asked to be released, he may not fit the mold of what Perth want the team to look like. Who knows, either way from what I've seen he's a quality player with huge potential, Just what the nix need.
now if you an Ted are going to moan and groan and generally bag evertything the Nix managemnt and team do with no evidence or solid logic, simply pack your bags and clear off!

Get your facts straight before you start typing.

1) Bertos is not being released - he's off contract, and as the statement clearly says, the negotiations on renewal have failed, largely, I would suspect, because Leo would love to be playing at home for a club that has better looking future than Perth.

2) NZ players are not classed as foreigners only at the Phoenix - for every other A-league club, NZ players are classed in the same way as the boys from Brazil, Costa Rica and Korea.

3) Bertos is not a striker, so calling him a one-goal wonder is either ignorant or just plain petty. He has pace, very good technique, and on evidence of AW games, links up with Smeltz superbly. Whoever doesn't want a pleyer like that at his/her club is, as I've posted earlier, an idiot.el grapadura2008-01-23 10:57:25

then i guess im an idiot but like i said well see who the idiot is. exactly off contract not signing its the same thing they didnt wanna pay him big bucks to stay. OK he set up 2 friggin goals thats toal crap for a right winger and don't give me this bs about perth not playing the right style after all they did finsh 7th???  we'd b better off signing nick roydhouse from manawatu at this rate buying all these crap not wanteds.

I'm rapt. It's not confirmed he will sign for the Phoenix of course but it is looking a lot more likely now. He has pace, he's creative and has a high work rate. If he does sign I think he will be one of our best players next season.

Bobby, you're allowed an opinion on his ability but it's pretty clear Perth wanted to re-sign him.

Wow, finishing 7th is a great achievement? For a club that, alongside Adelaide, had the greatest continuity coming into the A-league?

The reality is that Perth are crap - they couldn't buy a goal in the first few weeks of the season, having strikers like Dragicevic who couldn't score with a 5 dollar hooker in Vivian St and Robinson who couldn't hit a barn from two yards out. It seems fairly clear that players like Colossimo and Bertos, both of whom are rated highly in A-league terms by pretty much everyone other than you, are looking to leave a ship that's going nowhere in particular at the moment.

When we beat them 4-1 it was my opinion that Leo was the standout in a very poor Perth performance and given your join date how do you know we gave him crap? From what I remember a lot of people shared my opinion and if anything his workrate in a lost cause made him an even more attractive player. If there was anything that the Nix showed this season it was a never give up spirit and Leo will fit in well.

He links up with Smeltz well and last season he set up more goals than anyone else in the league, I'd think the reason he didn't set many up this year was because Perth couldn't buy a goal for most of the season. In fact, did he set up that goal at the RoF?
