ForteanTimes makes another ridiculous statement.

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

Isn't it refreshing to see most of the reaction on this thread as opposed to the similar, Sonny Bill Williams scenario. Football people see the whole picture, whereas the rugby league (and similarly rugby union) just don't get it - and SBW wouldn't have left the way he did if they had.
Football players have a very short career in which they have to maximise their earnings. People will still support the A League even though our stars move on - that's just the nature of the beast.
And that in a way is the strength of football and why it is in a really good position for the future - as we revel in the player go round (because some stars actually come back the other way at the end of their careers) - league and union are in danger of withering on the vine.

Yes but this trial happened with the full knowledge of the nix and wasn't some spur of the moment rash decision by Tony. Everything about this trial was done the proper way not the amateurish way SBW has done his.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

The really cool thing about this is the 'Nix have a player who's made the BBC rumour mill:

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate is giving a trial to New Zealand defender Tony Lochhead (Daily Star).

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/gossip_and_transfers/7532331.stm

Half the Uk's football fanz are going to google him, find the Nix and the fever, they'll be hooked...this is the start of a real a pandemic.

Good Point. He is a key attacking weapon and to hide him at LB would be a mistake imo.chocnut2008-07-30 22:39:42

Having seen more info about the Lockys trial comong out of the UK I am less optimistic.
Boro already have four players in that position.....thats four players already under contract.

Lockhead will only train with the first team, not play a game. He will be coming cold out of the A-League off season(6 months)with only a preseason warmup game. The pace and skill level of the EPL training will be a huge step up for him.

Ok, we know Lockhead can get forward and cross. Southgate will be first looking at his technical ability and defensive positioning. It a big jump from A-League to the EPL. Southgate will be thinking....this guy may have to mark Christiano Ronaldo or Joe Cole.

How do we know that Southgate is just using Lockheads trial as a rarkup for the other four...letting them know that the coach is unhappy with them.

I reckon there is only a 10 to 20% chance of Lockhead being signed. If he does sign he will be number four in his position.....so its reserve grade and bench warming. Sure he would get heaps of $$$ but personally I would rather see him turn out for the Phoenix than sit on the bench for Boro.

Id rather see him training with boro first team than turning out in the a league...least he'll have a shot at playing in the premiership this way.

*late night toilet and snack, I had to say something here*

If he signs, he got a better chance playing in the 44 round EPL + FA Cups/League Cup matches from the bench or from the reserve than back here in the 21 round A-League. Injuries, players out of form as well as resting players are a big thing for EPL squads to keep some form of rotation policy, so the whole squad has to be ready to play at short notice.

Having a heathly fit LB with a bit of attacking option is a rare thing at EPL level. If he pulls this off to be one of the regular LB in the league, then his valuation in the EPL can potentially be even bigger than Ryan Nelson simply because there is a lack of LB quality at the EPL.

Say that he didn't succeed, other clubs are also going to check him out as well because there are plenty crying out for LB. Although Boro seem to have first dips, you will find that others will have their club scouts including EPL ones that will keep an eye out. Other player agents may still able to go up to him after the trial and offer to find him another trial elsewhere if they think he is suitable enough. Boro like to think they are mid-table club but then half the EPL teams think that also.

So again good luck.

Yeah they've agreed to play 6 rounds overseas.

Even including the relegation playoffs (cough) that won't give them 44 matches

I was shocked when I heard this on Sky Sports news, and they showed his picture, and he was in a Phoenix shirt. So now all of England know about the club. Maybe they should write into the deal that Boro will play the Phoenix as part of a pre season tour next season. I do think that Tone L will do a good job in England, as Gareth Southgate has probaly seen how well Ryan has done, and seeing as there is a big similarity between them, as they both played in the states, and there both defenders.

Sky did say that Rickki was instrumental in setting up his trail with The Boro

Its great if Lockhead get himself a contract. However its my belief that he is not good enough for Boro but thats hy own belief.
Pogatetz was mental. the only reason to watch Boro last season. Tackles flying in like I hadnt seen since Briley and Hurlock bossed the Millwall midfield ages ago. He was a great reminder of what football used to be all about - Kicking the oppo of the park. I Loved watching him.

Lockhead might do ok in the chamionship though and thats not a bad serie to play in. It also resembles the A league alot mroe than the premiership.

As long as the quality of nationl football is so low in New zealand, kids have no other choice but to leave if they want to make it. However this obsession with England has to stop. Its a lot better to play for a dutch sides junior club than an english side for example. Go where they get a good footballing education rather than to England all the time. England missed the Euro 2008 and with managers like Southgate, Big Sam, Keegan, Curbishley and McClaren as Englands finest its no surprise that few English players have developed during the last 8 years.

Wellcome Millwallsean!

I agree with your comment that an NZ player should be looking at playing in the Championship or even the 1st division, because the premiership is way outta of their league, straight from "gods own" playing on the continent is always difficult because of language problems.

Terry Hurlock will never have an equal, fair but hard!
