Just heard on ZB news that Lochhead has been granted 10 (?) days leave to trial at Portsmouth (I think it was Portsmouth).

The Nix are anticipating Lochhead's trial will be successful and are planning for his departure.

It's Boro
Thanks = I was to gob smacked to catch the club's name.

I can see how this is a great opportunity for Tony and good for the All Whites (assuming he gets signed and gets game time) but I am struggling to see how letting one of our best players go 3 weeks before the season starts is good for the Nix - unless we get someone in return.

Just when our defence was looking impressive...
Still, highlights how quality he was last year. Awesome opportunity for him, and I guess reflects on the team and the quality of Phoenix footy

We may get a fair transfer fee though musn't we? This could also be the start of a relationship with Boro. Especially if they want to loan GOOD players out to us or something.

Good on Tony for making the leap from a-league to prem, BUT I'll be highly p*ssed off if we don't bring in a specialist left-back to replace him, but instead use someone like Sigmund or Christie as a make-shift for the season. If Tony goes, we need to bring in someone new.

P.S.
Great to see old Badger-face saying great things about our Ricki!

Stupid Herbert for telling southgate about him. As if southgate could appreciate a good defender.

Just posted about this on the news forum.

Fair play for Ricki to encourage him to go on to bigger things you have to admire that in this day and age but FFS.

It sounded like he suggested Southgate give him a trial.

I hope we get something in return for this if he goes

Downing for Tony then?

We are not talking about a trial in April / May when we would have time to fill the bloody great void created if Tony is successful. It is less than 3 weeks to the season opener and he is an absolutely pivotal  member of the team.

I think it would be useful for the club to explain to its supporters how this is a good thing for the Wellington Phoenix and what the plan is to cover for Tony.

Whats the chance that maybe Boro will agree to delay his move until this a-league season is over? That way he'd be in the UK just after the Xmas period, with 3 months of Prem footy left in the season.

What's this "I hope we get something...". How could there be any doubt? A great (relatively) big transfer fee I hope! The A-league is the start (or end!!) for a career pathway but it's not in the habit of giving bright prospects away. Is it??!HarryHotspur2008-07-29 19:08:34

David Carney went for a transfer fee of just $125k, but generally no (Djite was highest at 850k IIRC).

Big clubs often give fairly pathetic transfer fees to smaller clubs.

Dont get carried away, some of you are starting to sound bloody selfish. Its great for Lockhead and NZ football.Yes its annoying this close to the start of the season but the more players who play for the Phoenix and get to move to a higher level has to be be good for us going forward.

From the TV interview on 3 it seems lochy wasn't aware of any promotion on his behalf to Boro. So hopefully he has enough time to get his head right and make the best of his 10 days over there.

And Mr Herbert is a clever bugger.

Very, very smart move to promote your best players where possible. It means that players in the A-league with the talent to make it overseas will seriously think about the nix now as the potential step into the big leagues.

Who would have thunk it huh? the chance to go from welly straight to the EPL !!! no going via holland, usa, etc

Good Luck Lochy - Show them  how you good you are!

@michael... i can't see boro loaning us anything apart from 18 old chavs with a habit.

Trying to win the league would be better for us moving forward.

If it happens the only response is well done Lochy & thanks for the memories.

But I'd still be gutted.

Yes I am selfish when it comes to the Phoenix I support them not the Lochhead family. It is great and good that he may get the chance to make the step up, but its mighty close to the start of the season and he was pretty good last season to.

I also would like to know what is going on? What's with Ricki moonlighting as a player agent?

If its a way to forge links witht the club and get some players from the Smoggies in return then fine, (we could have picked a nicer club though).

We also better be getting one huge transfer fee. We are supposed to be building not letting our best players go!

Yes I know I live in a fantasy land but still.

Good luck to the fella but I don't remember too many left backs outside Carlos and Pearce (that's Stuart not Nigel!) being pivotal. The success of our season will rely on more than Lochy.

I don't think any true Nix fan will wish Tony anything but the best of luck with the trial but, I'm sorry to say, this has been handled poorly by the club.

In the announcement should have been some reassurance to the fans on what was been done to fill the void Tony will leave - with a player of his calibre.

If winning means we have to rely on one player then im afraid we will be waiting a long time.

I think this is a really great chance for Lochhead, and I hope he does it well enough to get a contract. He has stood out as a real talent in the left back position in a 442 lineup.

I like that Ricki promotes his players, how could he deny him an opportunity, as some seem to think he should.

There will be someone else out there to take Lochheads place, if he gets the nod at Boro

Go Lochy, best of luck mate
